Preparation of CNT/CNF/PDMS/TPU Nanofiber-Based Conductive Films Based on Centrifugal Spinning Method for Strain Sensors.

Flexible conductive films are a key component of strain sensors, and their performance directly affects the overall quality of the sensor. However, existing flexible conductive films struggle to maintain high conductivity while simultaneously ensuring excellent flexibility, hydrophobicity, and corrosion resistance, thereby limiting their use in harsh environments. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to fabricate flexible conductive films via centrifugal spinning to generate thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofiber substrates by employing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (C

Highly Stretchable, Transparent, Self-Healing Ion-Conducting Elastomers for Long-Term Reliable Human Motion Detection.

The flexible electronic sensor is a critical component of wearable devices, generally requiring high stretchability, excellent transmittance, conductivity, self-healing capability, and strong adhesion. However, designing ion-conducting elastomers meeting all these requirements simultaneously remains a challenge. In this study, a novel approach is presented to fabricate highly stretchable, transparent, and self-healing ion-conducting elastomers, which are synthesized via photo-polymerization of two polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDESs) monomers, i.e., methacrylic acid (MAA)/choline chlor

Dorsal Hand Reconstruction with Web Contracture Release Using Free Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery Flap.

We present a case in which reconstruction of the dorsum of the hand and finger web space was carried out concurrently with the insertion of a superficial inferior epigastric artery flap into the interdigital spaces. This approach was taken to prevent the potential development of subsequent web space contracture. The patient, a 57-year-old woman, presented with a necrotizing soft tissue infection on the dorsum of her left hand, resulting in a full-thickness skin defect extending from the metacarpophalangeal joint to the wrist, with exposure of the extensor tendons. The reconstructive surgery in

ExoMechHand prototype development and testing with EMG signals for hand rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation is a major requirement to improve the quality of life and mobility of patients with disabilities. The use of rehabilitative devices without continuous supervision of medical experts is increasing manifold, mainly due to prolonged therapy costs and advancements in robotics. Due to ExoMechHand's inexpensive cost, high robustness, and efficacy for participants with median and ulnar neuropathies, we have recommended it as a rehabilitation tool in this study. ExoMechHand is coupled with three different resistive plates for hand impairment. For efficacy, ten unhealthy subjects with me

Active Tuberculosis in a Patient Receiving Adalimumab for Psoriatic Arthritis and Chemoprophylaxis for Latent Tuberculosis Infection.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, including adalimumab, are widely used to treat refractory psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Although isoniazid chemoprophylaxis is generally effective in preventing reactivation of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), prophylactic measures do not fully protect against development of active tuberculosis. We report a rare case of active tuberculosis despite chemoprophylaxis for LTBI in a patient receiving adalimumab for PsA. A 60-year-old Japanese woman who had received a diagnosis of psoriasis at age 35 years presented with arthralgia of the right hand, which s

A Case of Atraumatic Acute Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Requiring Emergency Surgery.

Acute carpal tunnel syndrome (ACTS) is an urgent condition in which symptoms progress rapidly on an hourly basis, and emergency surgery may be required to treat it. ACTS often occurs after a traumatic event such as a fracture of the distal radius, and rarely occurs non-traumatically. We present a case of a 60-year-old male with ACTS secondary to acute synovitis due to rheumatoid arthritis. The patient complained of strong numbness from the thumb to the ring finger and pain in the palm, and he was unable to actively flex or extend his fingers. In addition, severe tenderness was observed in the

Clinical Relevance of Ultrasonographic and Electrophysiological Findings of the Median Nerve in Unilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Patients.

Few studies have compared the unaffected and affected sides in the same carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients using ultrasonography and electrophysiological tests. We focused on unilateral idiopathic CTS patients to investigate whether clinical test results differ between the unaffected and affected sides. The bilateral wrist joints of 61 unilateral idiopathic CTS patients were evaluated. The median nerve cross-sectional area of ultrasound image, and latencies of the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) were measured. The values obtained were compar

Expanding the Phenotypic Spectrum of APMR4 Syndrome Caused by a Novel Variant in LSS Gene and Review of Literature.

Alopecia intellectual disability syndromes 4 (APMR4) is a very rare autosomal recessive condition caused by a mutation in the LSS gene present on chromosome 21. This syndrome has a clinical heterogeneity mainly exhibited with variable degrees of intellectual disability (ID) and congenital alopecia, as well. Eight families with 13 cases have been previously reported. Herein, we provide a report on an Egyptian family with two affected siblings and one affected fetus who was diagnosed prenatally. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed a novel pathogenic missense variant (c.1609G > T; p.Val537Leu)

Excitability of anterior horn cells after periodic or discrete repetitive movements.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: It has been well established that spasticity interferes with smooth joint movements. Although the degree of spasticity is related to the excitability of anterior horn cells and is thought to improve after repetitive movements, the effect of the rhythm of repetitive movements on the excitability of anterior horn cells remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated the excitability of anterior horn cells after periodic and discrete repetitive movements using F waves. METHODS: Right-handed, healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Subjects then performed periodic or discre

Guillain-Barré syndrome in a patient with multiple myeloma after bortezomib therapy: A case report.

BackgroundBortezomib is a first-line drug approved for patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and has significantly increased their overall survival. However, bortezomib-induced peripheral neuropathy (PN) remains a significant side effect that has led to its discontinuation in some patients. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is recognized as an immune-mediated PN characterized by the involvement of multiple nerve roots and peripheral nerves and albuminocytologic dissociation in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and plasmapheresis are effective.Case summaryA 45-year-ol

Temporomandibular Joint Ganglion Cyst: A Unique Case of Complete Resolution Following Subtotal Excision.

Ganglion cysts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are a rare entity. Most often, ganglions present in anatomic regions, such as the hand, wrist, knee, foot, or ankle. Ganglion cysts are pseudocysts characterized by a fibrous connective tissue lining that lacks synovial cells and contains a thick gelatinous material. The etiology remains unclear, but might involve myxoid degeneration or softening of the collagen and connective tissue after long-term irritation and trauma. Ganglion cysts of the TMJ most commonly present as a swelling in the preauricular region, produce limited or no pain, and

Robotic Mirror Therapy System for Functional Recovery of Hemiplegic Arms.

Mirror therapy has been performed as effective occupational therapy in a clinical setting for functional recovery of a hemiplegic arm after stroke. It is conducted by eliciting an illusion through use of a mirror as if the hemiplegic arm is moving in real-time while moving the healthy arm. It can facilitate brain neuroplasticity through activation of the sensorimotor cortex. However, conventional mirror therapy has a critical limitation in that the hemiplegic arm is not actually moving. Thus, we developed a real-time 2-axis mirror robot system as a simple add-on module for conventional mirror

Trapeziectomy With Ligament Reconstruction and Tendon Interposition Arthroplasty With the Entire Width of the Flexor Carpi Radialis Tendon.

The original Burton-Pellegrini technique used to treat trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis suggests the use of half of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) width to reconstruct the ligament and perform the tendon interposition arthroplasty. In our study, unlike the original technique, we used the full thickness of the FCR and evaluated a sample of 100 thumbs (95 patients) preoperatively and postoperatively, with a mean follow-up of 36 months. According to the Eaton classification, 1 thumb was grade II, 81 were grade III, and 18 were grade IV. The mean patient age at the time of surgery was 62.4
