The present study examined attributions, emotions, and help-giving of 24 relatively unacculturated Latino-Americans toward a family member with schizophrenia. Ninety-one percent of participants had been rated as low in expressed emotion (low-EE) in an earlier study using a sample that overlaps with the present study. Low-EE refers to relatives who express few critical attitudes when talking about a mentally ill family member. Study findings indicate a link between relatives' emotions and their reported help-giving behavior. In support of attribution-affect theory, relatives who reported feelin

OBJECTIVE: The authors' goal was to estimate the lifetime and 12-month rates of major depressive episodes and dysthymia for Chinese Americans who reside in Los Angeles. This effort, the Chinese American Psychiatric Epidemiological Study, is the first large-scale community psychiatric epidemiological study on an Asian American ethnic group that used DSM-III-R criteria for major depressive episodes and dysthymia.
METHOD: A multi-stage sampling design was used to select respondents for participation in the survey. The sample included 1,747 adults, 18-65 years of age, who resided in Los Angeles C

INTRODUCTION: Little research examines the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in primary care, especially among racially/ethnically and culturally diverse women of various ages and medical statuses across the globe. However, differences in healthcare access, utilization, and education as well as social and cultural values surrounding women's health and sexuality suggest there are unique factors that place minoritized women at higher risk of developing FSD.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether country of origin and racial/ethnic identity account for differences in the FSD prevalence in

BACKGROUND: Oral health in early childhood is vital for long-term well-being, yet dental caries is highly prevalent among young children in the United States, especially in low-income and immigrant families. Brazilian immigrants, a rapidly growing Latin American population in the United States, face distinct barriers to oral health care, such as language differences, limited access to care, and a lack of culturally tailored resources. Despite this, Brazilian immigrants are understudied in public health research. Understanding Brazilian immigrant parents' perspectives is essential to advancing

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) can lead to longer-term adverse health outcomes if left unmanaged, including liver failure and liver cancer. Hispanic adults have the highest rates of MASLD of any U.S. racial/ethnic subgroup. The most effective treatment is weight loss, through healthy dietary changes and increased physical activity. This study conducted 2022-2023 aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability (primary), as well as exploratory effectiveness outcomes, of a behavioral lifestyle intervention for Hispanic patients with MASLD.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards smoking have been extensively researched across diverse populations with migration experience. The objective of this scoping review was to understand the extent, type, and geographical distribution of the published literature on smoking among people with migration experience across the globe.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Supported by two information specialists, we performed a comprehensive literature search (from 2012- 17 January 2024) in five databases, without language or geogr

INTRODUCTION: Limited data exist regarding head and neck cancer (HNC) burden among immigrants who may have distinct characteristics, and hence different incidence rates from the general population. Variations in behavioral habits, cultural lifestyle, or diet may cause variations across different subgroups.
METHODS: The whole immigrant population of Finnish residents born abroad, and their children were retrieved for the years 1970-2017. First-generation immigrants are defined as individuals born abroad, excluding their children (even if born abroad). The study comprised 0.5 million first-gene

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that undernutrition and enteric infections predispose children to stunted growth. Undernutrition and infections have been associated with limited access to healthy diets, lack of sanitation, and access barriers to healthcare - all associated with human rights. Stunting has also been documented to be a major determinant of subsequent obesity and non-communicable diseases. Short leg length relative to stature during adulthood seems to be a good proxy indicator tracking such barriers, and has been reported to be associated with adverse health effects during adu

BACKGROUND: This study describes the prevalence of comorbid physical and mental health problems in a national sample of US Latinos. We examined the co-occurrence of anxiety and depression with prevalent physical chronic illnesses in a representative sample of Latinos with national origins from Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other Latin American countries.
METHOD: We used data on 2,554 Latinos (75.5% response rate) ages 18 years and older from the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS). The NLAAS was based on a stratified area probability sample design, and the sample came from the 5

BACKGROUND: Although South Asians (SA) form a large majority of the Asian population of U.S., very little is known about cancer in this immigrant population. SAs comprise people having origins mainly in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We calculated age-adjusted incidence and time trends of cancer in the SA population of California (state with the largest concentration of SAs) between 1988-2000 and compared these rates to rates in native Asian Indians as well as to those experienced by the Asian/Pacific Islander (API) and White, non-Hispanic population (NHW) population of California.

Immigrants in Canada may have been particularly vulnerable to substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic due to heightened psychological distress from intensified marginalization. Research on substance use in this population during global crises remains limited. This study examines patterns of substance use and how these patterns vary by self-perceived mental health status.. This cross-sectional study used data from Cycle 6 of the Canadian Perspectives Survey Series, Substance Use and Stigma During the Pandemic, conducted from January 25 to 31, 2021. The sample included 651 immigrants aged 15

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and tobacco use (ATU) have been persistent public health concerns among youth in the United States (U.S.), including Hispanic youth who represent 25% of all American youth. While the psychosocial factors associated with ATU among Hispanic adolescents have been investigated for decades, the social environments for youth have undergone considerable change over time. The aim of this scoping review was to examine how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence ATU among Hispanic adolescents and to assess the extent to which mental health variables are integrated into these s

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse pregnancy and birth complications. Asian populations have the highest risk of GDM, with even greater risk among foreign-born (FB) residents. Socio-political factors, such as heightened anti-Asian racism and travel restrictions during COVID19 may have further increased their risk of GDM. Our study sought to examine the associations between race/ethnicity, nativity status, and GDM rate and changes during COVID19.
METHODS: We used the US National Center for Health Statistics natality administrative data (N = 14,219,719).

BACKGROUND: Sex differences are related to both biological factors and the gendered environment. To untangle sex-related effects on health and disease it is important to model sex-related differences better.
METHODS: Data came from the baseline visit of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), a longitudinal cohort study following 16,415 individuals recruited at baseline from four study sites: Bronx NY, Miami FL, San Diego CA, and Chicago IL. We applied LASSO penalized logistic regression of male versus female sex over sociodemographic, acculturation, and psychological

OBJECTIVE: To study if Asian ethnic groups in Hawaii today maintain folk-based beliefs about dementia, have inadequate biomedical understanding of dementia, and differ among each other regarding perceptions of dementia.
DESIGN: The study adapts and expands a 2004 survey of ethnic groups on perceptions of Alzheimer disease demonstrating that ethnic minority groups hold more folk perceptions and less biomedical perceptions of dementia than Caucasians. This study surveys particular ethnic minority family members of elders admitted to four long-term care and inpatient facilities in Hawaii. Sevent

BACKGROUND: Latinos are a fast growing segment of the U.S. health care population. Acculturation factors, including English fluency, result in an ethnic group heterogeneous with regard to SES, health practices, and health education needs. This study examined how demographic and health-related characteristics of Spanish-dominant (SD), Bilingual (BIL), and English-dominant (ED) Latino men and women aged 25-64 differed among members of a large Northern California health plan.
METHODS: This observational study was based on data from cohorts of 171 SD (requiring an interpreter), 181 BIL, and 734 E

OBJECTIVES: Vietnamese immigration to the U.S. since the conclusion of the Vietnam war has been substantial and in Orange County, CA, Vietnamese Americans comprise 3% of the population (the largest community in the US). Our objective was to collect data on the HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and self-reported high risk behaviours within this community.
METHODS: A survey instrument was administered anonymously in Vietnamese to 532 respondents in their homes. Individuals from three population strata were randomly sampled: men 18 to 35 years old (N = 193); men 36 to 45 years old (N = 137); and wom

We used an intersectional minority stress perspective to examine the association between family/cultural stress and mental health among substance-using Mexican-Americans. Employing a unique longitudinal sample of 239 socioeconomically disadvantaged, non-injecting heroin-using Mexican-Americans from San Antonio, Texas, we examined how culturally relevant stressors are related to depression and suicidal ideation. First, we identified depression and suicidal ideation prevalence rates for this disadvantaged sample. Second, we determined how cultural stress is experienced over time using stress tra

The observed intergenerational stress response to negative social and historical events is at the core of historical trauma theory, which has been applied to Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders, among others. The historical and social experiences of the Mexican population living in the United States have many parallels that lend themselves to the application of historical trauma theory to macro-level and micro-level influences on access to health care, physical health status, and mental health status, including substance abuse among Mexican Americans.
