We present 4 cases of cor triatriatum in whom the diagnosis was correctly made by 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography, which showed the supravalvular left atrial membrane that divides the left atrium into 2 chambers. The pulmonary veins were connected normally to the proximal left atrial chamber and the left atrial appendage was connected to the distal left atrial chamber. In 1 patient there was evidence of severe pulmonary venous obstruction to the mitral valve by Doppler examination, while in the other three, there was no venous obstruction. Patients were then examined by real-time

Three-days-old newborn baby underwent ligation of the ductus arteriosus under the diagnosis of TAPVC and PDA with high flow heart failure. Her UCG showed the direct connection of common pulmonary venous chamber (CPVC) to the upper and medial portion of right atrium. CPVC positioned just above the left atrium but does not communicated with the left atrium. These findings characterized this anomaly as II A cor triatriatum classified by Lucus-Schumidt. At 5-month-old, corrective operation was performed. Both right and left venous chambers joined just before the connection to right atrium and drai

Cor triatriatum sinistrum (division of the left atrium) is a recognized clinical and surgical entity. Division of the right atrium, also known as cor triatriatum dexter, is an extremely rare congenital abnormality in which persistence of the right valve of the embryonic systemic sinus venosus divides the right atrium into two chambers. Typically, the right atrial partition is due to exaggerated fetal eustachian and thebesian valves, which together form an incomplete septum across the lower part of the atrium. This septum may range from a reticulum to a substantial sheet of tissue. Cor triatria

A 20-month old girl with severe pulmonary hypertension and cardiomegaly was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit with right ventricular failure of unknown origin. Only after decompression of the heart chambers under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), did the pathognomonic membrane of Cor triatriatum become visible on echocardiography. The patient underwent successful surgical correction and subsequently cardiac function recovered completely. Cor triatriatum remains a rare congenital cardiac disorder with a variable presentation, often including recurrent respiratory infectio

The term cor triatriatum is used to describe a fibromuscular partition that divides an atrium into two compartments. It was first used by Borst in 1905, although the lesion had been described before by Church in 1868. Both described divided left atrial chamber (also referred to as cor triatriatum sinister). The incidence of the divided left atrial chamber among patients with congenital heart disease is reported at 0.1% and 0.4% in an autopsy study. Divided right atrial chamber - also referred to as cor triatriatum dexter - is even rarer to an extent that there is no reported incidence and only

Cor triatriatum is an uncommon cardiac defect that occurs in 0.1-0.4% of congenital heart disease patients. It is characterized by a fibromuscular membrane separating the left (sinister) or the right (Dexter) atriums in tow chambers. The disease is usually discovered accidently in late childhood, usually as a result of a moderate form of this condition type. We discuss the case of a 14-year-old girl who had been experiencing exertional dyspnea and palpitations for about a year. She was referred to our hospital for assessment after an initial echocardiogram at another hospital revealed a mass a

Cor triatriatum sinister is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of a fibromuscular membrane dividing the left atrium into two chambers: one entering the four pulmonary veins, the other connecting to the mitral valve. The extent of the communication between the two chambers and the presence of associated lesions determine the severity of symptoms and the complications. We report the case of a 20-year-old man firstly diagnosed with obstructive cor triatriatum sinister and severe pulmonary hypertension.

We report a female patient with asymptomatic cor triatriatum sinister, associated with 4q34.3 deletion. Her child, carrying the same imbalance, suffers from tetralogy of Fallot. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of cor triatriatum associated with deletion of the long arm of the chromosome 4; furthermore, the majority of patients with chromosome 4 long arm syndrome have de novo deletions and only few familial cases have been reported so far.

Two patients with the classical clinical, angiographic, and echocardiographic signs of tricuspid atresia are reported, where the correct diagnoses were made at operation; one child had cor triatriatum dexter, the other child total anomalous systemic venous drainage to the left atrium. The literature on cor triatriatum dexter and total anomalous systemic venous drainage is discussed and a new angiographic sign for the differentiation from tricuspid atresia is reported: nonopacification of the right atrial appendage with right atrial angiocardiography.

Cor triatriatum dexter is a rare cardiac anomaly with division between the sinus and primitive atrial portions of the right atrium. It is supposed that the failure of the venous valves to regress appropriately may create abnormalities in fetal circulation predisposing the fetus to maldevelopment of the right heart structures. The underdevelopment of the right ventricle with hypoplasia or atresia of the tricuspid valve is a well known abnormality, but underdevelopment of the right atrium with tricuspid hypoplasia due to multiple venous valves is extremely rare. This is a case of complex type of

Presently described is successful cesarean delivery in a pregnancy superimposed on long-term bosentan treatment in an Eisenmenger syndrome patient with cor triatriatum sinistrum, double-orifice mitral valve, and large ventricular septal defect resulting in single functioning ventricle with double outlets. Cesarean delivery was performed at 27th week of gestation without maternal or fetal morbidity. The infant had no congenital cardiovascular abnormality or any probable teratogenic effect of bosentan treatment during pregnancy.

We report a unique case of a 4-year-old boy with intermediate-type atrioventricular septal defect, cor triatriatum sinister, persistent left superior vena cava, unroofed coronary sinus, and absent right superior vena cava. Persistent left vena cava draining into the unroofed coronary sinus was demonstrated easily using the agitated saline-contrast echocardiography. After conformation with angiographic evaluation, surgery was performed at a single session. Roofing of the coronary sinus with polytetrafluoroethylene patch, mitral cleft repair, tricuspid annuloplasty, atrioventricular defect repai

Congenital heart disease may coexist with airway abnormalities, increasing perioperative risk. We report a 2-year-old girl with a complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVCD), left superior vena cava (LSVC), and severe pulmonary hypertension, in whom multimodality imaging was pivotal for diagnosis and management. Transthoracic echocardiography confirmed CAVCD, LSVC, and severe pulmonary hypertension. Preoperative computed tomography demonstrated left pulmonary artery compression of the left main bronchus and a suspected cor triatriatum. Intraoperative bronchoscopy revealed left bronchomalaci

BACKGROUND: Cor triatriatum sinister is a rare congenital heart disease that can mimic left atrial obstructive lesions. Symptoms vary based on the severity of obstruction.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 14-year-old girl with severe exercise intolerance. Echocardiography and computed tomography scan revealed a fibromuscular membrane causing left atrial obstruction and an anomalous venous drainage with a persistent left superior vena cava to the coronary sinus. Surgical intervention is definitive, typically via sternotomy.
DISCUSSION: Given the complexity and lack of expertise in minimal
