Longstanding dental pathology in Neandertals from El Sidrón (Asturias, Spain) with a probable familial basis.

Two Neandertal specimens from El Sidrón, northern Spain, show evidence of retained left mandibular deciduous canines. These individuals share the same mitochondrial (mtDNA) haplotype, indicating they are maternally related and suggesting a potential heritable basis for these dental anomalies. Radiographs and medical CT scans provide evidence of further, more extensive dental pathology in one of these specimens. An anomalous deciduous canine crown morphology that developed before birth subsequently suffered a fracture of the crown exposing the pulp sometime after eruption into functional occlus

Atypical presentation of lateral periodontal cyst associated with impacted teeth: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is an uncommon form of developmental odontogenic cyst. LPC can be suspected when there is a round, well-circumscribed radiolucency, usually of small diameter, along the lateral surface of vital erupted teeth, predominantly in the mandibular premolar region. Histopathological analysis allows LPC to be diagnosed based on its characteristic features such as a thin cuboidal to stratified squamous non-keratinizing epithelium containing epithelial plaques and glycogen-rich clear cells. The aim of this article was to report two cases of atypical LPC associat

The sensitivity and specificity of frozen-section histopathology in the management of benign oral and maxillofacial lesions.

PURPOSE: The management of odontogenic cysts and tumors typically requires a biopsy, which may present significant challenges and prompt an additional visit to the operating room before definitive treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the validity of frozen-section diagnosis in the management of benign oral and maxillofacial lesions, allowing intraoperative diagnosis followed by definitive treatment under the same general anesthetic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients treated at the University of Michigan Health System was performed. Patients of all ag

Histoenzymological features of epithelial cells in epidermoid carcinomas of oral mucosa and in ameloblastomas of jaws.

An histoenzymological study comprising oxidative enzymes, diaphorases, acid and alkaline phosphatases, naphtolesterases, referred to 60 biopsy and operation specimens. It showed interesting arguments for diagnosis and understanding of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the oral mucosa and also of ameloblastomas of jaws. The enzymatic activities of precancerous and cancerous oral lesions were compared with those of normal buccal mucosa and epidermis, benign hyperkeratosis (activities similar to those of the epidermis) and lichen planus. In severe dysplasia and epidermoid carcinoma, numerous

Effect of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft on the healing of jaw defects after cyst enucleation.

PURPOSE: This study radiographically evaluated the changes that occur in jaw defects after enucleation of cysts and either grafting with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) or packing with absorbable gelatine sponge (Gelfoam). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients (14 males, 18 females) with cystic lesions of the jaws were divided into two groups. Group A underwent enucleation and bone grafting with DFDBA. Group B underwent enucleation and packing with Gelfoam. Both groups were evaluated radiographically before surgery, immediately postoperatively, and 6, 12, 24, and 36 mont

Simultaneous adenomatoid odontogenic and keratocystic odontogenic tumours in a patient with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

Gorlin and Goltz described a syndrome in which multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts and bifid ribs occurred in combination. The jaw keratocysts are a consistent feature of 'Gorlin-Goltz' or naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Central nervous system and ocular involvement occurred together with the fairly typical facial features of frontal bossing and hypertelorism. This case report documents the pathology associated with an impacted maxillary canine tooth in a boy with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome. The patient presented for investigation of the failure of eruption of the right p

Ameloblastic Fibroma: A Case Report of a Rare Presentation Illustrating a Diagnostic Challenge.

This case report emphasizes the diagnostic role of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in identifying a rare pediatric case of ameloblastic fibroma (AF), comprising approximately 2% of odontogenic tumors. The 10-year-old patient initially presented with painless left mandibular posterior gingival swelling, resembling radicular or dentigerous cysts in clinical and conventional radiographic assessments. However, CBCT revealed a distinct periapical radiolucency linked to deciduous molar roots and an unerupted premolar, exposing mandibular lingual plate thinning and buccal plate disruption. The l

[Supernumerary teeth in the maxilla and mandible-an interdisciplinary challenge. Part 1: epidemiology, etiology, classification and associated complications].

Supernumerary teeth develop in addition to the normal dentition and are a therapeutic challenge for pedodontists, orthodontists and oral surgeons alike. Therefore, interdisciplinary treatment concepts are needed for the benefit of the patient. In the present, two-parted literature review on supernumerary teeth, current classification, associated complications, diagnostic steps and different therapeutic approches are presented and discussed. Supernumerary teeth are diagnosed in the primary and permanent dentition. Supernumerary incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, as well as distomolars an

An impacted central incisor due to supernumerary teeth: a multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: Hyperdontia is a disorder of odontogenesis characterised by excess teeth. Many complications can be associated with supernumerary teeth, such as crowding, tooth displacement, diastema, deep caries, retention or impaction, delayed eruption or ectopic eruption of adjacent teeth, aesthetic problems, neuralgic manifestations, root resorption of adjacent teeth, and dentigerous cyst formation with significant bone destruction. Treatment of hyperdontia depends on the area and number of supernumerary teeth, and also on the presence of pathologic processes that can affect them and/or the te

Three-Dimensional Volumetric Assessment of the Effect of Decompression on Large Mandibular Odontogenic Cystic Lesions.

PURPOSE: The primary approach to treating large cystic lesions is controversial. The aims of the present study were to assess the effects of decompression before enucleation for the treatment of large cystic lesions and to compare the rate of decrease of keratocystic odontogenic tumor, ameloblastoma, and dentigerous cyst at specific times (preoperatively and at 6 months). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 40 patients (mean age, 31.22 ± 8.78 yr) with large mandibular lesions (>3 cm). Decompression was used to release intraluminal pressure and decrease the volume of the lesion. Three-dim

Micro-PIXE (proton-induced X-ray emission) study of the effects of fluoride on mineral distribution patterns in enamel and dentin in the developing hamster tooth germ.

Micro-PIXE (proton-induced X-ray emission) analysis was performed on unfixed and anhydrously prepared sections from developing enamel and dentin from hamsters injected with a single dose of 20 mg NaF/kg body weight. Fluoride, apart from inducing the formation of the characteristic paired response in the enamel (i.e., a hyper- followed by a hypomineralized band in the secretory enamel), also induces the formation of sub-ameloblastic cystic lesions under the transitional and early secretory enamel accompanied by relatively intense hypermineralization of the underlying cystic enamel surface. Eruption of maxillary canines.

In 79 of 124 children with bilaterally located widened follicles around non-erupted canines one of the maxillary canines was chosen by lot for surgical exposure of the tooth crown. In seven cases both maxillary canines were exposed. The remaining 38 children were radiographically controlled at certain time intervals as were the 86 cases where surgery was performed. The follicles removed from 52 cases were histologically examined. The result showed that surgical exposure did not enhance the eruption of the tooth. The histological examination showed that the histologic appearance of the extirpat
