Acousticolateral systems were examined by means of the horseradish peroxidase tracing method in a teleost (Sebastiscus marmoratus). The torus semicircularis projected bilaterally to the optic tectum, nucleus ventromedialis thalami of Schnitzlein ('62), and reticular formation; contralaterally to the torus semicircularis; and ipsilaterally to the nucleus preglomerulosus of Schnitzlein ('62) and the inferior olive. No topographic organization was detected between the torus semicircularis and the nucleus preglomerulosus. Ipsilateral inputs to the torus were from dorsal telencephalic areas (pars c

Altered gamma activity is associated with epilepsy. Gamma entrainment using sensory stimuli (GENUS), a non-invasive, exogenous stimulation by rhythmic 40 Hz light flicker, strengthens gamma activity in the primary visual cortex (V1) and suppresses spike generation. Here, we assessed the effect of GENUS on epileptogenesis in male mice with status epilepticus induced by pilocarpine. We found that GENUS immediately increased gamma activity and reduced epileptiform spikes in epileptic mice. After six weeks of GENUS treatment in epileptic mice, significant reductions were observed in neuronal loss

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous retinal activity (SRA) is important during eye-specific segregation within the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), but the feature(s) of activity critical for retinogeniculate refinement are controversial. Pharmacologically or genetically manipulating cholinergic signaling during SRA perturbs correlated retinal ganglion cell (RGC) spiking and disrupts eye-specific retinofugal refinement in vivo, consistent with an instructive role for SRA during visual system development. Paradoxically, ablating the starburst amacrine cells (SACs) that generate cholinergic spontan

The abnormal organization of the central visual pathways in the albino ferret has been characterized anatomically and physiologically. Recordings in dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the albino ferret show that lamina A1, which receives an aberrant projection from the contralateral eye, contains an extensive representation of the ipsilateral visual hemifield with receptive fields located up to 35 degrees from the vertical meridian. This is not the case in pigmented ferrets, for which the vast majority of units, activated through either the contralateral or ipsilateral eye, have receptive fi

Activity-dependent extracellular pH shifts were studied in slices of the rat dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) using double-barreled pH-sensitive microelectrodes. In 26 mM HCO3--buffered media, afferent activation (10 Hz, 5 s) elicited an early alkaline shift of 0.04+/-0.02 pH units associated with a later, slow acid shift of 0.05+/-0.03 pH units. Extracellular pH shifts in the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus were rare, and limited to acidifications of approximately 0.02 pH units. The alkaline shift in the dLGN increased in the presence of benzolamide (1-2 microM), an extracellular c

The role of voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR)-mediated enhancement of spontaneous GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) was investigated in chick brain slices. Whole cell recordings of neurons in the lateral spiriform (SpL) and ventral lateral geniculate (LGNv) nuclei showed that cadmium chloride (CdCl2) blocked the carbachol-induced increase of spontaneous GABAergic IPSCs, indicating that VDCCs might be involved. To conclusively show a role for VDCCs, the presynaptic effect of carbachol on SpL and LGNv neurons was examined

Twenty-two patients with psychomotor epilepsy were implanted with depth electrodes along the axis of the mesial temporal lobe to identify an operable unilateral epileptic focus. Neuronal and field potentials were recorded in response to diffuse retinal illumination and clear short-latency responses were found in parahippocampal gyrus. These visual afferents in the mesial temporal lobe are assumed to be both from subcortical and cortical visual areas. There was a clear asymmetry in the ventral trajectory of the geniculostriate pathway as evidenced by asymmetric neuronal and field potential resp

PURPOSE: Detecting sound-related activity using functional MRI requires the auditory stimulus to be more salient than the intense background scanner acoustic noise. Various strategies can reduce the impact of scanner acoustic noise, including "sparse" temporal sampling with single/clustered acquisitions providing intervals without any background scanner acoustic noise, or active noise cancelation (ANC) during "continuous" temporal sampling, which generates an acoustic signal that adds destructively to the scanner acoustic noise, substantially reducing the acoustic energy at the participant's e

BACKGROUND: Exploring the role of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the lateral geniculate body (LGBd) in visual development and studying the therapeutic effect of VIP on amblyopic kittens.
METHODS: Three-week-old domestic cats were divided into a control group (n = 10) and a monocular deprivation group (n = 20), with an eye mask covering the right eye of those in the deprived group. After pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) recording confirmed the formation of monocular amblyopia, the left LGBd was isolated from 5 kittens in each group. The remaining control kittens continued to be r

OBJECTIVES: To calibrate and standardise an animal model of graded optic nerve injury (ONI) in rats to facilitate future inter-laboratory data comparisons, focussing on quantification of injury intensity, injury severity, and the correlation between them.
METHODS: A pair of cross-action forceps or a pair of artery clips was used to induce optic nerve (ON) crush injuries. A lever principle and a simplified method were used to measure the crushing force. The simplified method directly measured weights as an external force exerted on the tip of the forceps or clips, which was just sufficient to

Damage to the auditory system following high-level sound exposure reduces afferent input. Homeostatic mechanisms appear to compensate for the loss. Overcompensation may produce the sensation of sound without an objective physical correlate, i.e., tinnitus. Several potential compensatory neural processes have been identified, such as increased spontaneous activity. The cellular mechanisms enabling such compensatory processes may involve down-regulation of inhibitory neurotransmission mediated by γ-amino butyric acid (GABA), and/or up-regulation of excitatory neurotransmission, mediated by gluta

In spite of the considerable progress in clinical and molecular research, knowledge regarding brain damage in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) and type 3 (SCA3) still is limited and the extent to which the thalamus is involved in both diseases is uncertain. Accordingly, we performed a pathoanatomical analysis on serial thick sections stained for lipofuscin granules and Nissl substance through the thalami of two genetically confirmed cases: one an SCA2 patient, the other an SCA3 patient. During this systematic study, we detected severe destruction of the reticular (RT), fasciculosus (FA), v

OBJECTIVE: We investigated if auditory neurons have an intrinsic ability to radically transform auditory signals.
METHOD: We surveyed membrane properties that control coding by neurons, identified with intracellular staining or infrared-DIC videomicroscopy, in three stations of the auditory pathway. We used intracellular and patch-clamp techniques in slices, to study the voltage responses to current pulse injections and distinguished voltage-gated conductances with selective blockers.
RESULTS: First order spherical bushy cells in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus responded at a short, stabl

Up to now little involvement of the afferent visual pathway (optic nerve and optic radiation and visual cortex) in HIV infection has been apparent. These results are based on our prospective investigations of 538 HIV-infected individuals, among them 261 patients with full-blown AIDS carried out by the same examiner over a 6-year period (1984-1990). Diseases of the optic nerve were observed in 22/261 (8.4%) of Aids patients but in only 1/227 (0.4%) of patients with earlier stages of HIV infection. Optic neuritis was the most common disease (in 14/261 = 5.4% of Aids patients), for the most part

Twenty-six years after a total right hemispherectomy for tumor when thirteen years old, a right-handed patient presented with disturbances of equilibrium, urinary incontinence, and a marked reduction in motor impulses, in spite of a subnormal intelligence quotient (0.85). Computed tomography examinations suggested the presence of a normal pressure hydrocephalus. However intracranial pressure monitoring and isotopic and cerebrospinal fluid perfusion tests showed the absence of any cerebral obstruction, and free communication between the cerebral and spinal spaces, though intracranial volume cap

Multiple sources innervate the visual thalamus to influence image-forming vision prior to the cortex, yet coordination between non-retinal and retinal inputs in shaping thalamic visual selectivity remains unclear. Using dual-color two-photon calcium imaging in the thalamus of awake mice, we observed a higher fraction of direction-selective boutons among input from superior colliculus neurons than from retinal ganglion cells, both providing strong converging excitatory input to thalamic neurons. Collicular and retinal axons exhibit retinotopic organization with similar precision. At a fine scal

BACKGROUND: Spreading of misfolded proteins has been suggested for neurodegenerative diseases. The hierarchical distribution of protein deposits in Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) supports this concept.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate α-synuclein and tau-deposition in the optic pathway as an excellent anatomical model, which follows a strict trajectory including a cortico-geniculate feedback connection.
METHODS: We immunostained the optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), and occipital cortex for AT8 (phosphorylated tau), α-synuclein, and disease-associated prion protein (PrP) i

BACKGROUND: The study of tinnitus mechanisms has increased tenfold in the last decade. The common denominator for all of these studies is the goal of elucidating the underlying neural mechanisms of tinnitus with the ultimate purpose of finding a cure. While these basic science findings may not be immediately applicable to the clinician who works directly with patients to assist them in managing their reactions to tinnitus, a clear understanding of these findings is needed to develop the most effective procedures for alleviating tinnitus.
PURPOSE: The goal of this review is to provide audiolog

The current study investigated the behavioral and neuroanatomical effects of embryonic knockdown of the candidate dyslexia susceptibility gene (CDSG) homolog Dyx1c1 through RNA interference (RNAi) in rats. Specifically, we examined long-term effects on visual attention abilities in male rats, in addition to assessing rapid and complex auditory processing abilities in male and, for the first time, female rats. Our results replicated prior evidence of complex acoustic processing deficits in Dyx1c1 male rats and revealed new evidence of comparable deficits in Dyx1c1 female rats. Moreover, we foun

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors modulate the release of GABA, glutamate, acetylcholine and dopamine in the brain. Here we describe a novel choline-sensitive nicotinic acetylcholine receptor that mediates enhanced GABA release in the chick ventral lateral geniculate nucleus. Whole-cell recordings in slices demonstrated that choline (0.03-10 mM), generally considered an alpha7-selective agonist, and carbachol (3-300 microM), a non-selective cholinergic agonist, both increased the frequency of spontaneous GABAergic events in ventral lateral geniculate nucleus neurons. Tetrodotoxin (0.5 microM)
