Risk assessment of various insecticides used for management of Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri in Florida citrus, against honey bee, Apis mellifera.

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), is a major pest of citrus trees worldwide. A wide variety of insecticides are used to manage D. citri populations within citrus groves in Florida. However, in areas shared by citrus growers and beekeepers the use of insecticides may increase the risks of Apis mellifera  L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) loss and contaminated honey. The objective of this research was to determine the environmental toxicity of insecticides, spanning five different modes of action used to control D. citri, to A. mellifera. The insecticides investig

A non-insect-derived artificial diet supports larval development and predation but limits starvation resistance in Menochilus sexmaculatus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a predator of aphids and other soft-bodied pests, but practical artificial diets for larval rearing remain poorly developed. We optimized an artificial diet formulation without insect-derived ingredients using an L9 orthogonal array with four ingredients: pork liver, egg albumen powder, soybean powder, and corn germ oil. Diet performance was screened using the proportion of larvae reaching the fourth instar and larval developmental duration, with Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) as the natural-prey control. The pred

Mechanism of action of soybean oil in arthropods: mortality results from tracheal infiltration and obstruction of gas exchange structures.

Oils are widely used in arthropod pest control, yet their modes of action remain poorly understood and often differ across studies. To investigate the mechanism of action of a commercial soybean oil formulation, we evaluated its physical and toxicological effects on three arthropod species across several developmental stages: adults and nymphs of Uroleucon sonchi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), adults and eggs of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Trombidiformes: Tetranychidae), and larvae and eggs of Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Adults, immature stages, and eggs were either topica

Multifunctional lysozymes from the assassin bug Sycanus bifidus: Insecticidal proteins with anticoagulant and melanization inhibition properties.

BACKGROUND: Predatory hemipterans deploy complex venom cocktails to immobilize preys, yet the specific roles of many individual venom components remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Four lysozyme genes were identified from the genome of the predatory assassin bug Sycanus bifidus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), comprising one i-type (SbLyzi) and three c-type lysozyme genes (SbLyzc1-3). Transcriptomic and quantitative (q)PCR analyses revealed that these lysozymes were expressed at different levels in various venom glands. Of them, SbLyzc1-3 with signal peptides displayed significant transcriptions in th

Brassica rapa treatments with methyl salicylate enhance foraging capacity of generalist natural enemies in a concentration-dependent manner.

The aphid Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) causes significant crop damage by feeding on plant tissues, transmitting viruses, and reducing agricultural productivity. Challenges associated with chemical control methods, such as the development of pest resistance and adverse environmental impacts, highlight the need to enhance the efficacy of natural enemies for sustainable pest management. Methyl salicylate (MeSA) has been extensively studied in pest management using baited traps and slow-release packets; however, its role in enhancing natural enemy behavior through induced plant def

Dynamics in Pest Status of Phytophagous Stink Bugs in the Neotropics.

In this review article, we present and discuss the main factors influencing the change in pest status of phytophagous stink bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in the Neotropics. We have surveyed the published records over the past 50 years and divided this timeframe into decades. This was done to rank in time the relative abundance (percentage) of the following species, known pests of commodities, in the Neotropical Region: the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.); the green-bellied stink bugs, Diceraeus melacanthus Dallas and D. furcatus (F.); the redbanded stink bug, P

Cold tolerance, water balance, energetics, gas exchange, and diapause in overwintering brown marmorated stink bugs.

Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an emerging pest which established in Ontario, Canada, in 2012. Halyomporpha halys overwinters in anthropogenic structures as an adult. We investigated seasonal variation in the cold tolerance, water balance, and energetics of H. halys in southwestern Ontario. We also induced diapause in laboratory-reared animals with short daylength at permissive temperatures and compared cold tolerance, water balance, energetics, and metabolism and gas exchange between diapausing and non-diapausing individuals. Halyomorpha halys that overwintered outside in Onta

Pathogen promotes insect ovarian development by inducing a dual role of host ATPSyn-β.

Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), a pathogenic bacterium causing citrus Huanglongbing, forms a mutualistic relationship with the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We find that CLas enhances the development of testes, ovaries, and mating behavior in D. citri. Transcriptome analysis of ovaries reveals that CLas infection upregulates ATP synthesis genes, increasing ATP levels in D. citri. Silencing the ATPSyn-β gene expression reduces ATP content in the ovary and triglyceride and glycogen content in the fat body, thus decr

Niemann-Pick type C2 protein PpseNPC2-1 binding volatile nerolidol mediates prey localization of the pond wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata.

As a key natural enemy of common agricultural pests, the pond wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata preys on planthoppers, leafhoppers and other pests. Chemoreception is essential for P. pseudoannulata in locating prey and searching for mates. Although our previous work identified Niemann-Pick type C2 (NPC2) proteins as olfactory-related in P. pseudoannulata, the molecular mechanisms underlying prey detection remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that the P. pseudoannulata spiders showed a significant preference for rice plants infested with Nilaparvata lugens (brown planthoppers). Nerolidol, a m

Natural population dynamics of Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, and its control based on pheromone trapping.

The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is a major agricultural pest and the principal vector of Huanglongbing (HLB), a devastating citrus disease. Thus, its control is of utmost importance: since D. citri mates multiple times, the use of mating disruption has the potential to reduce or eliminate populations. In this work, we develop a sex-structured, piecewise smooth dynamical system modeling the natural population dynamics of D. citri, focusing on adult stages and mating behavior. The main goal of this manuscript is to show that the population of D. citri, when near a locally asymptotica

Viral proteins resolve the virus-vector conundrum during hemipteran-mediated transmission by subverting salicylic acid signaling pathway.

Hemipteran insects transmit viruses when infesting plants, during which vectors activate salicylic acid (SA)-regulated antiviral defenses. How vector-borne plant viruses circumvent these antiviral defenses is largely unexplored. During co-infections of begomoviruses and betasatellites in plants, betasatellite-encoded βC1 proteins interfere with SA signaling and reduce the activation of antiviral resistance. βC1 inhibits SA-induced degradation of NbNPR3 (Nicotiana benthamiana nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes 3), a negative regulator of SA signaling. βC1 does not bind directly to NbNPR

Double cuticle barrier in two global pests, the whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum and the bedbug Cimex lectularius.

The integument protects the organism against penetration of xenobiotics and water that would potentially interfere with homeostasis. In insects that play key roles in a variety of agricultural and ecological habitats, this inward barrier has barely been investigated. In order to advance knowledge in this field, we studied integumental barrier (cuticle) permeability in the two global pests Trialeurodes vaporariorum (greenhouse whitefly) and Cimex lectularius (bedbug), applying a simple dye-penetration assay. In agreement with our recent findings in Drosophila melanogaster, we show that the surf

Wolbachia-induced loss of male fertility is likely related to branch chain amino acid biosynthesis and iLvE in Laodelphax striatellus.

Wolbachia are endosymbionts that infect many species of arthropods and nematodes. Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) is the most common phenotype in affected hosts, involving embryonic lethality in crosses between Wolbachia-infected males and uninfected females. The molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are currently unclear. Here we examine the molecular correlates of the Wolbachia infection in Laodelphax striatellus (Fallén), an important rice pest, where embryonic lethality is strong and almost complete. We compared the gene expression of 4-day-old Wolbachia-infect

Plant virus differentially alters the plant's defense response to its closely related vectors.

BACKGROUND: The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most widely distributed agricultural pests. In recent years, B. tabaci Q has invaded China, and Q has displaced B in many areas now. In a number of regions of the world, invasion by B and/or Q has been followed by outbreaks of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). Our previous study showed TYLCV directly and indirectly modified the feeding behavior of B. tabaci in favor of Q rather than B. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, we quantified the salicylic acid (SA) titers and relative gene expression of

Behavioral responses of the leafhopper, Cicadulina storeyi China, a major vector of maize streak virus, to volatile cues from intact and leafhopper-damaged maize.

The chemical ecology of the leafhopper, Cicadulina storeyi China (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), an important vector of Maize Streak Virus (MSV), was studied with a view to developing novel leafhopper control strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. Choice tests using a Y-tube olfactometer revealed that odors from uninfested maize seedlings (Zea mays cv. Delprim) were significantly more attractive to C. storeyi than odors from C. storeyi-infested seedlings. Headspace samples of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collected from 10 to 12 day-old uninfested seedlings were more attractive than those collected

TRYPANOSOMA CRUZI INFECTION IN THREE SLENDER-TAILED MEERKATS (SURICATA SURICATTA).

Trypanosoma cruzi is a protozoan parasite primarily transmitted by triatomine insects (Hemiptera: subfamily Reduviidae) and is the cause of Chagas disease (CD). This report describes three cases of CD in a mob of five slender-tailed meerkats (Suricata suricatta) living in an outdoor exhibit at one zoological institution in Texas. The index case was a 9.5-yr-old female that presented with ataxia, lethargy, and pleural effusion. This case was diagnosed with CD postmortem via cytology, T. cruzi PCR of whole blood and lung fluid, and histology. Blood was opportunistically collected from the remain

Analysis of Peptide Ligand Specificity of Different Insect Adipokinetic Hormone Receptors.

Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a highly researched insect neuropeptide that induces the mobilization of carbohydrates and lipids from the fat body at times of high physical activity, such as flight and locomotion. As a naturally occurring ligand, AKH has undergone quite a number of amino acid changes throughout evolution, and in some insect species multiple AKHs are present. AKH acts by binding to a rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor, which is related to the vertebrate gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors. In the current study, we have cloned AKH receptors (AKHRs) from seven differen
