Biological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society2025eng
Spiders, ubiquitous and abundant predators in terrestrial ecosystems, often are the subjects of an unjust negative perception. However, these remarkable creatures stand as unsung heroes within our ecosystems, contributing a multitude of ecosystem services critical to human well-being. Here, we describe the diverse spectrum of ecosystem services offered by spiders and their potential to inspire or directly provide nature-based solutions. Provisioning services include the versatile uses of silk-like and other materials, inspiration for biomimetic technology, medicines derived from venom, hemolym

Phloem-inhabiting unculturable bacterial pathogens are persistently transmitted by insect vectors. However, how they evade insect immune responses to ensure persistent transmission remains unknown. The important melanization immune response in insects is triggered by cleavage of prophenoloxidase (PPO) into active phenoloxidase (PO) via clip-domain serine proteases (CLIPs). Here, we demonstrate that infection of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) in psyllid vectors activates the peptidoglycan recognition protein (PGRP)-CLIP1-CLIP4-PPO-PO signaling cascade to induce a mild melanization res

Organophosphorus pesticides like Chlorpyrifos 48%EC were widely used to control agricultural pests. The present study aimed to evaluate the toxic effects of Chlorpyrifos 48%EC on B. alexandrina snails, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. After exposure of snails to serial concentrations to determine the LC50, thirty snails for each sublethal concentration (LC10 2.1 and LC25 5.6 mg/l) in each group were exposed for 24 h followed by another 24 h for recovery. After recovery random samples were collected from hemolymph and tissue to measure the impacts on Phagocytic index, histological,

Insect defensins are promising candidates for the development of potent antimicrobials against antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). An insect defensin, DLP4, isolated from the hemolymph of Hermetia illucens larvae, showed low antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (G+) pathogens and high cytotoxicity, which limited its effective therapeutic application. To obtain more potent and low cytotoxicity molecules, a series of peptides was designed based on the DLP4 template by changing the conservative site, secondary structure, charge, or hydrophobicity. Among them, a variant

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera litura (tobacco caterpillar, S. litura) is a pest of great economic importance due to being a polyphagous and world-distributed agricultural pest. However, agricultural practices involving chemical pesticides have caused resistance, resurgence, and residue problems, highlighting the need for new, environmentally friendly methods to control the spread of S. litura.
AIM: This study aimed to investigate the gut poisoning of grayanotoxin I, an active compound found in Pieris japonica, on S. litura, and to explore the underlying mechanisms of these effects.
METHODS: S. litu

In 1967 we reported for the first time five cases of an acquired bleeding disorder in humans which developed after contact with saturnidae caterpillars. Since that time, other cases have been reported in Brazil, French Guyana, Peru, Paraguay and Argentina. The caterpillars have been identified as Lonomia achelous (LA) in Venezuela and northern Brazil and as Lonomia obliqua (LO) in southern Brazil. All patients present pain and a burning sensation at the site of contact. Within a few hours hematomas and hematuria are seen in combination with intracerebral and intraperitoneal hemorrhage (in some

Phenoloxidase (PO) activity was studied in Sydney rock oysters (Saccostrea glomerata). As in other molluscs, PO was found to exist as a pro-enzyme (proPO) in hemocytes. ProPO could be activated to PO by exogenous proteases (trypsin and chymotrypsin), exposure of hemocytes to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and by the detergents, Triton X-100 and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Inhibition studies confirmed the proPO activating system of Sydney rock oysters is a proteinase cascade in which Ca2+ dependent serine proteinases proteolytically convert proPO into active PO. Activated PO

Cyclooxygenase (COX) is a two-step enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandin H2, a labile intermediate used in the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). In vertebrates and corals, COX must be N-glycosylated on at least two asparagine residues in the N-(X)-S/T motif to be catalytically active. Although COX glycosylation requirement is well-characterized in many species, whether crustacean COXs require N-glycosylation for their enzymatic function have not been investigated. In this study, a 1,842-base pair cox gene was obtained from ovarian cDNA of t

Plasma lipoproteins involved in lipid transport are target for free radical-evoked pathological conditions in several mammalian models. The main hemolymphatic protein of Boophilus microplus is a heme-binding lipoprotein (HeLp, for Heme LipoProtein) that carries dietary heme produced from degradation of vertebrate hemoglobin to tissues of the tick. Addition of heme to phospholipid liposomes resulted in intense lipid peroxidation, which was inhibited by addition of HeLp. HeLp prevented lysis of red blood cells by heme. HeLp also inhibited reactions of heme with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH)

The present study determined the effect of osmotic stress on the insulin-like receptor binding characteristics and on glucose metabolism in the anterior (AG) and posterior (PG) gills of the crab Neohelice granulata. Bovine insulin increased the capacity of the PG cell membrane to phosphorylate exogenous substrate poly (Glu:Tyr 4:1) and the glucose uptake in the control crab group. The crabs were submitted to three periods of hyperosmotic (HR) and hyposmotic (HO) stress, for 24, 72 and 144 h, to investigate the insulin-like receptor phosphorylation capacity of gills. Acclimation to HO for 24 h

Particular groups of plant-beneficial fluorescent pseudomonads are not only root colonizers that provide plant disease suppression, but in addition are able to infect and kill insect larvae. The mechanisms by which the bacteria manage to infest this alternative host, to overcome its immune system, and to ultimately kill the insect are still largely unknown. However, the investigation of the few virulence factors discovered so far, points to a highly multifactorial nature of insecticidal activity. Antimicrobial compounds produced by fluorescent pseudomonads are effective weapons against a vast

The activation of the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway reduces water loss from plants challenged by drought stress. The effect of drought-induced ABA signaling on the defense and nutrition allocation of plants is largely unknown. We postulated that these changes can affect herbivorous insects. We studied the effects of drought on different feeding stages of pea aphids in the wild-type A17 of Medicago truncatula and ABA signaling pathway mutant sta-1. We examined the impact of drought on plant water status, induced plant defense signaling via the abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), an

The hydrothermal crab, Xenograpsus testudinatus (xtcrab) inhabits shallow-water, hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-rich hydrothermal vent regions. Until now, the adaptative strategy of xtcrab to this toxic environment was unknown. Herein, we investigated the sulfide tolerance and detoxification mechanisms of xtcrabs collected in their high-sulfide hydrothermal vent habitat. Experimental immersion of xtcrab in various sulfide concentrations in the field or in aquaria assessed its high sulfide tolerance. HPLC measurement of hemolymph sulfur compounds highlighted xtcrab detoxification capacity via catabolis

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Viscum album L. (European mistletoe), a member of the Santalaceae, is a hemiparasitic, evergreen shrub growing on deciduous and coniferous trees. In traditional and folk medicine, mistletoe was used for the treatment of central nervous system disorders such as epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia, nervous excitability, neuralgia, headache, dizziness and fatigue. However, relatively little is known of its neuropharmacological activity.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of treatment with aqueous and hydroethanolic extracts from Vis

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne viral diseases cause significant burden in much of the developing world. Although host-virus interactions have been studied extensively in the vertebrate host, little is known about mosquito responses to viral infection. In contrast to mosquitoes of the Aedes and Culex genera, Anopheles gambiae, the principal vector of human malaria, naturally transmits very few arboviruses, the most important of which is O'nyong-nyong virus (ONNV). Here we have investigated the A. gambiae immune response to systemic ONNV infection using forward and reverse genetic approaches.

Murine (endemic) typhus caused by Rickettsia typhi, one of the most widely distributed arthropod-borne diseases, is transmitted to humans mainly by the oriental rat flea. The human body louse, Pediculus humanus corporis, has been suspected to have a role in the transmission of R. typhi to humans. To evaluate the potential role of Pediculus humanus corporis as a vector of murine typhus, we used R. typhi in an experimental model of human body louse infection previously used with R. prowazekii. A rabbit was made bacteremic by inoculating it with 2 x 10(6) plaque-forming units of R. typhi; it rema

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are filter feeder bivalves that are constantly in contact with a wide range of microorganisms, some of which are potentially pathogenic. How mussels recognize and respond to pathogens has not been fully elucidated to date; therefore, we investigated the immune mechanisms that these animals employ in response to a bacterial bath infection from the surrounding water, mimicking the response that mussels mount under natural conditions. After the bath infection, mussels were able to remove the bacteria from their bodies and from the water tank. Accordingly, antib

Recently, a novel human rickettsiosis, namely Atlantic rainforest spotted fever, was described in Brazil. We herein report results of a survey led around the index case in an Atlantic rainforest reserve in Peruibe municipality, southeastern Brazil. A Rickettsia parkeri-like agent (Rickettsia sp. Atlantic rainforest genotype) and Ricketsia bellii were isolated from adult Amblyomma ovale ticks collected from dogs. Molecular evidence of infection with strain Atlantic rainforest was obtained for 30 (12.9%) of 232 A. ovale adult ticks collected from dogs. As many as 88.6% of the 35 examined dogs ha

In view of the paucity of studies on 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) in Macrobrachium rosenbergii, this experiment investigated the effects of dietary 5-HTP on the growth, immune function, oxidative status, hormone levels and tryptophan metabolism via the combination of metabolome, microbiota and transcriptome analysis in M. rosenbergii broodstock. A total of 200 Female M. rosenbergii (3 months old; initial body weight 17.8 ± 1.6 g) were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments: a reference diet (REF), a control diet (CON), and the CON diet supplemented with 5-HTP at 50 (HTP5), 150 (HTP15), or
