The minimum inhibitory doses (MIDs) of essential oils by vapour contact to inhibit the growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum on agar medium were determined using airtight boxes. Among seven essential oils examined, cinnamon bark oil showed the least MID, followed by lemongrass, thyme and perilla oils. Lavender and tea tree oils showed moderate MID, and citron oil showed the highest MID, being 320 times higher than that of cinnamon bark oil. The MID values were less than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values determined by agar dilution assay. Furthermore, the

Mesona blumes polysaccharide (MBP), a primary active component extracted from Mesona blumes, has a number of bioactivities. Nevertheless, hepatoprotective activity of MBP has been rarely reported. The purpose of this study is to investigate hepatoprotective effects of MBP on acute liver injury in mice. Results indicated that the MBP could remarkably decrease the increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the serum caused by tetrachloride (CCl4) treatment (P < 0.05). Medium and high dose of MBP treatment (200 mg/kg body weight, 300 mg/kg body weig

Heavy metals are the cause of one of the most significant biosphere contamination problems worldwide, as they can be highly reactive and toxic according to their oxidation levels. Their toxic effects are correlated with the elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative cellular damage occurring in plants. The aim of the present study was the investigation of the effects of three heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Zn) applied to the soil in biochemical defense-related responses and allergen production in the aromatic plant oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) from the Lamiaceae family. The con

The effects of baicalein on the human hepatoblastoma G2 (Hep G2) cell line were investigated in this study. By an SRB viability assay, we demonstrated that baicalein reduced the viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The apoptotic features such as chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation were observed in the baicalein-treated cells. During the process of apoptosis, we noticed a sequential dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential (DeltaPsim) and an apparent redistribution of cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the cytosol in baicalein-treated cells. Furthermore, the mitoch

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) refer to infections in any part of the respiratory tract, which are common, with most of the world's population contracting at least one infection annually. These infections are becoming important causes of death and morbidity due to the rapid development of antimicrobial resistance that has resulted in reduced efficacy of existing drugs. Different local societies residing in Ethiopia have been reported to use traditional medicinal plants to treat RTIs. Nevertheless, up-to-date summarized data on the diversity of plants used in the traditional medicine syste

We have determined that the methanolic extract of L. caulescens (MELc) produced a significant vasodilator effect in a concentration-dependent and endothelium-dependent manner. This relaxation was blocked by N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methylester (L-NAME), indicating that MELc vasodilator properties are endothelium mediated due to liberation of nitric oxide (NO). In this paper we aimed to corroborate its mode of action. MELc effects on noradrenaline (NA)-induced contraction in isolated rat aortic thoracic rings with endothelium (+E), in the presence of atropine (0.1 microM) and 1-H-[1,2,4]-oxadi

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Glioblastoma (GB) is the most aggressive and prevalent glioma within the central nervous system. Despite considerable efforts, GB continues to exhibit a dismal 5-year survival rate (∼6%). This is largely attributed to unfavorable prognosis and lack of viable treatment options. Therefore, novel therapies centered around plant-derived compounds emerge as a compelling avenue to enhance patient survival and well-being. The South African species, Plectranthus hadiensis Schweinf. (P. hadiensis), a member of the Lamiaceae family, has a history of use in traditional med
