Ant Interactions with Aroid Infructescences (Araceae) Used as Temporary Nesting Sites, Cohabiting with a Complex Endophagous Insect Community in a Neotropical Rainforest.

Ants are abundant and diverse in the tropics, nesting in different forest layers and utilizing a wide range of nesting sites, from specialized to opportunistic. To describe the floral interactions of endophagous insects in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Mexico), samples of Araceae infructescences were collected during an annual cycle at different altitudes. Ten species of Araceae belonging to the genera Dieffenbachia (1), Philodendron (5), Syngonium (3) and Xanthosoma (1) were investigated. A total of 334 infructescences were sampled, of which only 5.1% were found to be infested by ants. H

Efficacy of Precocene I from Desmosstachya bipinnata as an Effective Bioactive Molecules against the Spodoptera litura Fab. and Its Impact on Eisenia fetida Savigny.

The sustainability of agroecosystems are maintained with agro-chemicals. However, after more than 80 years of intensive use, many pests and pathogens have developed resistance to the currently used chemistries. Thus, we explored the isolation and bioactivity of a chemical compound, Precocene I, isolated from the perennial grass, Desmosstachya bipinnata (L.) Stapf. Fractions produced from chloroform extractions showed suppressive activity on larvae of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), the Oriental armyworm. Column chromatography analyses identified Precocene I confirmed using FTIR, HP

Specificity of herbivore-induced responses in an invasive species, Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed).

Herbivory-induced responses in plants can both negatively affect subsequently colonizing herbivores and mitigate the effect of herbivory on the host. However, it is still less known whether plants exhibit specific responses to specialist and generalist herbivores in non-secondary metabolite traits and how specificity to specialists and generalists differs between invasive and native plant populations. We exposed an invasive plant, Alternanthera philoxeroides, to Agasicles hygrophila (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae; specialist), Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae; generalist), manual clipping

Establishment of Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in sugarcane fields of Ethiopia and origin of founding population.

Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is used as a classical biological control agent against Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a serious exotic pest of cereal crops in eastern and southern Africa. This parasitoid has been introduced into several African countries for the control of C. partellus in maize, Zea mays L., and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.), but it has never been released in Ethiopia. It is hypothesized that it spread into Ethiopia from populations released in Kenya and Somalia to become the predominant parasitoid of C. partellus in maize and sorghum

Larval feeding duration affects ecdysteroid levels and nutritional reserves regulating pupal commitment in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

What little is known about the endocrine regulation of mosquito development suggests that models based on Lepidoptera and Drosophila may not apply. We report on basic parameters of larval development and the commitment to metamorphosis in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti that are affected by varying the length of feeding time for last instar larvae. A critical mass for pupal commitment was achieved after 24 h of feeding by last instars, also the age at which tissue production and hemolymph titers of ecdysteroids are increasing. A greater proportion of last instars successfully pupated a

Insect cypoviruses: advances in structural characterization, evolutionary genomics, and host interaction dynamics.

Cypoviruses are insect-specific, double-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the genus Cypovirus within the family Spinareoviridae. Cypoviruses primarily infect insects of the orders Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera. These viruses replicate in midgut epithelial cells, forming polyhedrin-based occlusion bodies. Cypovirus genomes typically consist of 10-16 linear double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) segments that encodes distinct viral proteins; however, the number of genomic segments may vary among species. Each genomic segment encodes a functionally specialized distinct viral protein, with high intra

Integrated Transcriptomic and Physiological Analyses Reveal Disruption of Digestive Homeostasis Induced by Protease Inhibitors in Anticarsia gemmatalis Caterpillars.

Protease inhibitors (PIs) are promising bioactive compounds for sustainable pest management because they interfere with the digestive processes of herbivorous insects. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying insect adaptation to natural and synthetic PIs remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the midgut responses of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) to the soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (SKTI) and the synthetic tripeptide GORE-2 using integrated transcriptomic, biochemical, and histological approaches, complemented by an exploratory metatranscriptomic ana

Intraspecific Hybridization Improves Performance of the Biological Control Agent Hypena opulenta.

Introduced species often undergo genetic drift and natural selection, which can reduce genetic diversity and drive differentiation among populations. Intraspecific hybridization, outcrossing among individuals from genetically distinct groups, may counteract these effects by increasing heterozygosity, potentially improving performance. However, in classical biological control agents, genetic diversity is typically low due to small founding sizes, long-term quarantine rearing, and single-source collections from the native range. As a result, opportunities for beneficial hybridization may be limi

Multifunctional Defense of Achelura yunnanensis Cocoon: High-Strength Tough Silk Fiber, Biomineral Reinforcement, and Protease Degradation Resistance.

Natural silks offer combinations of mechanical performance and biological functionality that synthetic materials still struggle to replicate. Here, we report the structural, mechanical, and biochemical characterization of cocoon silk from Achelura yunnanensis (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae), a moth that builds a leaf-wrapped cocoon with three integrated defense layers. The silk fiber exhibits an average tensile strength of 1038 ± 434 MPa, a toughness of 81 ± 49 MJ m-3, and an elastic modulus of 22.1 ± 8.8 GPa, approximately twice the respective values for Bombyx mori silk. These properties stem from

Mining and engineering of active PB transposons in Hymenoptera.

PiggyBac (PB) transposons, such as the canonical transposon from Trichoplusia ni and the more recently discovered Mage from Lepidoptera, are "cut-and-paste" mobile genetic elements widely harnessed as non-viral vector systems for gene therapy and transgenesis. Despite the ecological and economic significance of the insect order Hymenoptera, the evolutionary history and functional diversity of PB transposons within this group remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic investigation of PB transposons across 287 hymenopteran species. Our analysis revealed a widespre

Doublesex knockout via CRISPR/Cas9 disrupts fertility and sexual dimorphism of wings in the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis.

The doublesex (dsx) gene has a conserved role in sex determination in insects, controlling sexual development and mating behavior. Although dsx is known to participate in these critical functions, its role in insect sex determination remains not fully elucidated. Given the economic importance of the rice pest Chilo suppressalis, we employed this species as a model to investigate the function of its dsx homolog. We cloned and characterized the Csdsx gene, which is 1123 bp in length and encodes four sex-specific proteins: three female-specific isoforms of 252, 258, and 254 amino acids, respectiv

Invertebrate Iridescent Viruses (Iridoviridae) from the Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda.

Invertebrate iridescent viruses (IIVs, family Iridoviridae) are icosahedral double-stranded DNA viruses that infect a wide range of invertebrates, particularly in humid and aquatic environments. During field trials in Chiapas, southern Mexico, larvae of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), displayed an unexpected lavender iridescence, leading to the discovery of novel IIV isolates from this major agricultural pest. Restriction endonuclease analysis revealed evident diversity among isolates from individual infected larvae. Although one field experiment yielded inco

pH-responsive nanoparticles for oral delivery of RNAi for sustained protection against Spodoptera exigua.

To enhance the RNAi efficiency of dsRNA against the Spodoptera exigua through a feeding method, we developed a pH-responsive nanoparticle, chitosan-polyethylene glycol-carboxyl (CS-PEG-COOH). This nanoparticle enhances RNAi efficiency by improving dsRNA stability in the midgut of S. exigua and can intelligently release dsRNA under alkaline conditions. Firstly, the CS-PEG-COOH carrier was prepared via cross-linking reactions, and the mass ratio of dsRNA to CS-PEG-COOH was obtained using electrophoretic mobility. The carrier composite materials were then characterized using isothermal titration

Insect cuticular compounds affect Conidiobolus coronatus (Entomopthorales) sporulation and the activity of enzymes involved in fungal infection.

Mycoses are a global problem that affects humans and animals. In the present study, the entomopathogenic soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Entomophthorales), infecting in tropics also humans, sheep and horses, was cultivated with the addition of insect cuticular compounds (CCs) previously detected in the cuticle of C. coronatus-resistant fly species (C10-C30 fatty alcohols, butyl oleate, butyl stearate, glycerol oleate, squalene, tocopherol acetate). Our findings indicate that CCs have diversified and complex effects on the growth and sporulation of C. coronatus and its ability to infect the

Simultaneous exposure of nematophagous fungi, entomopathogenic nematodes and entomopathogenic fungi can modulate belowground insect pest control.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and fungi (EPF) are well known biological control agents (BCAs) against insect pests. Similarly, the nematophagous fungi (NF) are considered good BCA candidates for controlling plant parasitic nematodes. Because NF can employ EPNs as food and interact with EPF, we speculate that the simultaneous application of EPNs and EPF might result in higher insect mortality, whereas the triple species combination with NF will reduce the EPN and EPF activity by predation or inhibition. Here we evaluated single, dual (EPN + EPF, EPF + NF, EPN + NF) and triple (EPN + EPF + N

Are the skin scar characteristics and closure of the parietal peritoneum associated with pelvic adhesions?

The brinjal fruit and shoot borer (BFSB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a very detrimental pest that causes significant economic losses to brinjal crop worldwide. Infested brinjal fruits were collected from vegetable fields located at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi, India, during two consecutive seasons (2021-2022). The larvae of the pest were brought to the laboratory and reared under controlled conditions of 25 ± 0.5 °C and 70 ± 5% relative humidity, for the emergence of parasitoids. In addition, the survey of Hymenoptera par

Can Fluconazole Be Used to Treat Non-Resistant Candida (Candidozyma) auris Infections? Preclinical Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Data From a Galleria mellonella Infection Model.

BACKGROUND: Azole therapy is currently not used against Candida auris infections. Although fluconazole resistance is prevalent, 10% to 45% of isolates among clades remain non-resistant (minimum inhibitory concentrations [MICs] <32 mg/L). We evaluated fluconazole pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics against these isolates using a Galleria mellonella model. METHODS: Nine C. auris isolates representing 5 clades and MICs of 1 to 128 mg/L were studied, and 4 Candida albicans isolates were included for model validation. Larvae were infected with lethal inocula and treated for 4 days with human-equival

The serine peptidase inhibitor TPCK induces several morphophysiological changes in the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto.

Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto (C. parapsilosis) has emerged as the second/third commonest Candida species isolated from hospitals worldwide. Candida spp. possess numerous virulence attributes, including peptidases that play multiple roles in both physiological and pathological events. So, fungal peptidases are valid targets for new drugs development. With this premise in mind, we have evaluated the effect of serine peptidase inhibitors (SPIs) on both cell biology and virulence aspects of C. parapsilosis. First, five different SPIs, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, benzamidine, 4-(2-aminoeth
