Reflection Spectroscopy Skin Carotenoids Correlate with Serum Carotenoids in School-Aged Children.

BACKGROUND: Serum carotenoids are thought to reflect higher consumption of fruits and vegetables. However, venous blood draws are invasive and not suitable for pediatric populations. Reflection spectroscopy (RS) offers a noninvasive alternative for measuring carotenoids in the skin; however, the relationship between RS-assessed skin carotenoids and serum carotenoids in children remains understudied. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that RS-assessed skin carotenoids would significantly correlate with serum and dietary carotenoids in children. METHODS: This was a cross-secti

Interactive Effects of Genotype and Molybdenum Supply on Yield and Overall Fruit Quality of Tomato.

Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential trace element for plant growth, development, and production. However, there is little known about the function and effects of molybdenum in tomato plants. The present study assessed the influences of different Mo concentrations on four tomato F1 hybrids ("Bybal" F1, "Tyty" F1, "Paride" F1, and "Ornela" F1) grown using a soilless system with different Mo levels [0.0, 0.5 (standard NS), 2.0, and 4.0 μmol L-1, respectively]. The crop yield, plant vigor, fruit skin color, TA, fruit water content as well as the accumulation of SSC, and some antioxidant compounds such

Lutein exerts anti-inflammatory effects in patients with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Many coronary artery disease (CAD) patients exhibit chronic low-grade inflammation. Carotenoids are anti-oxidants with potential anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we first assessed relationships between interleukin (IL)-6 and individual carotenoids in plasma from CAD patients. Based on the results, we proceeded to assess anti-inflammatory effects of one carotenoid, lutein, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from CAD patients. METHODS: Lutein + zeaxanthin (isomers with lutein being dominant), β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, α- and β-carotene and IL-6 were measured

Fatigue reduction diet in breast cancer survivors: a pilot randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Fatigue is a prevalent and burdensome effect of breast cancer. Fatigue has been linked to chronic inflammation, and diets high in antioxidant nutrients have been associated with lesser prevalence and severity of fatigue. Studies are needed, however, to test if antioxidant-rich diets could improve fatigue. METHODS: Pilot, randomized, trial conducted between January 2014 and April 2015, to investigate if a 3-month diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods, named the fatigue reduction diet (FRD), improved fatigue and sleep compared to an attention c

Validation of the effects of molecular marker polymorphisms in LcyE and CrtRB1 on provitamin A concentrations for 26 tropical maize populations.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) compromises immune function and is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children in many developing countries. Biofortification, or breeding staple food crops that are rich in micronutrients, provides a sustainable way to fight VAD and other micronutrient malnutrition problems. Polymorphisms, with associated molecular markers, have recently been identified for two loci, LcyE (lycopene epsilon cyclase) and CrtRB1 (β-carotene hydroxylase 1) that govern critical steps in the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway in maize endosperm, thereby enabling the opportunity to

Dietary antioxidants for cardiovascular prevention.

The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is associated with life in aerobic conditions. ROS are thought to be implicated in the pathogenesis of various human diseases since they are capable of damaging biological macromolecules such as DNA, carbohydrates and proteins. The organism maintains defense against ROS, including enzymes and low molecular-weight antioxidants. An important source of antioxidants is diet which contains numerous compounds exhibiting antioxidant activity. A shortage of antioxidants in the diet might promote coronary heart disease through accumulation of oxidized LDL

[Functional food and bioavailability in the target organ skin].

Reactive free radicals can be produced in the skin by the action of environmental factors, such as sun radiation and toxins. These radicals can damage the DNA, proteins and lipids of the living cells. The consequences can be skin aging, immune suppression and even skin cancer. Humans have developed a protective mechanism against the action of free radicals in the form of antioxidant substances. Several of these antioxidants cannot be produced by humans and have to be acquired via food, such as carotenoids. Optical, non-invasive methods, like resonance Raman spectroscopy, allow a qualitative an

SlERF26 contributes to melatonin-associated regulation of ethylene biosynthesis and carotenoid accumulation during tomato fruit ripening.

SlERF26 acts as an essential downstream node in melatonin signaling, forming a novel regulatory module that integrates ethylene and carotenoid metabolism to drive tomato fruit ripening. Melatonin is an emerging regulator of plant development and stress responses, yet the specific transcriptional mechanisms by which it modulates climacteric fruit ripening remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological effects of exogenous melatonin on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. 'Micro Tom') fruit ripening and elucidated the underlying molecular regulatory network. Our results sho

Serum carotenoids modify the association between porphyromonas gingivalis IgG and mortality: a prospective cohort study with 25.8 years of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a vital pathogen that can increase mortality. However, whether serum carotenoids, commonly known antioxidants, modify the association of serum P. gingivalis immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels with mortality remains uncertain. We aimed to explore the modification of this association by serum carotenoids. METHODS: The associations of serum P. gingivalis IgG levels with mortality among 7,043 participants from the Third U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were assessed. The modifications of serum carotenoids on the asso

Multi-omics dissection of CO2-induced metabolic reprogramming in broccoli: key regulators of growth and nutritional quality.

The rising global CO2 level influences plant growth, productivity, and nutritional quality, and elevated CO2 (ECO2) is commonly utilized in greenhouses to enhance vegetable crop yields. However, the molecular mechanism underlying plant responses to ECO2 remains unclear. This study examined the impacts of ECO2 on the nutritional quality and growth characteristics of two widely cultivated broccoli varieties, 'Yanxiu' and 'Qiuli'. A pot experiment was carried out in environmentally auto-controlled growth chambers over a period of 100 days, under both ambient CO2 (ACO2, 420/470 ppm, daytime/nightt
