Volumetric measurement of root resorption following molar mini-screw implant intrusion using cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Molar intrusion by mini-screw implantation can cause different degrees of root resorption. However, most methods (2-D and 3-D) used for evaluating root resorption have focused on the root length without considering 3-D resorption. The purpose of this study was to volumetrically evaluate root resorption using cone beam computed tomography(CBCT) after mini-screw implant intrusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1. The volumes of 32 teeth were measured using CBCT and laser scanning to verify the accuracy of CBCT. 2. Twelve overerupted molars from adult patients were investigated in this study

Rapid maxillary expansion assisted by palatal mini-implants in adolescents - preliminary study.

Our preliminary clinical study compares the transverse skeletal and dento-alveolar modifications occurring after rapid maxillary expansion with purely dental anchorage or with dental anchorage assisted by palatal mini-implants, in endognathic adolescents aged 12 to 17. Nine patients were treated by means of tooth- and implant-supported expansion, and 7 others by means of a purely tooth-borne expander. The changes, 4 months after expansion, were measured on impressions and front-view X-rays in the 2 groups, and on three-dimensional X-rays for 6 patients treated by tooth- and implant-supported e

Miniscrews: a simple alternative for complex treatments.

The use of mini-implants has already considerably changed the way we plan and perform a large number of orthodontic treatments to the point where, today, we can envisage taking a fresh look at some of our "classical" treatment options. This article will describe a number of clinical cases drawn from several years' experience of working with miniscrews. We present first a brief flashback and an overview of the different indications for micro-implants followed by four case studies presenting treatments which, without miniscrews, would have been treated by much more aggressive approaches.

Interdisciplinary management of a skeletal class II, hyperdivergent patient accompanied by multiple missing teeth and severe overeruption with orthodontic assisted space redistribution and implant restoration.

Long-term absence of posterior teeth often leads to significant overeruption of the antagonists, posing a substantial challenge for restorative treatment planning. This case report presents an interdisciplinary approach for a skeletal class II, hyperdivergent patient accompanied by missing maxillary second premolars (15,25), left maxillary second molar (27), mandibular first and second molars (36,37,46,47) and severe overeruption of maxillary first molars (16,17). The maxillary first molars were intruded using both buccal and palatal miniscrews while the existing maxillary spaces were closed.

Safe zones of the maxillary alveolar bone in Down syndrome for orthodontic miniscrew placement assessed with cone-beam computed tomography.

The aim of this study was to quantify the available maxillary alveolar bone in a group of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) to determine the best areas for orthodontic miniscrew placement. The study group consisted of 40 patients with DS aged 12-30 years. We also selected an age and sex-matched control group. All measurements were performed on cross-sectional images obtained with cone-beam computed tomography. The selected areas of interest were the 4 interradicular spaces between the distal wall of the canine and the mesial wall of the second molar, in both maxillary quadrants. We measured

Treatment of dental and skeletal bimaxillary protrusion in patient with Angle Class I malocclusion.

In the orthodontic clinic, skeletal and dental bimaxillary protrusion is presented frequently as one of the factors leading patients to seek orthodontic treatment, mainly due to the esthetic involvement it has. The patient of this article illustrates this situation, being deeply uncomfortable with her esthetic appearance, due to the excessive upper incisors exposure and problems with lip sealing. This case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics (BBO), as part of the requisites to become a BBO Diplomate.

Intrusion of supra-erupted molars using miniscrews: clinical success and root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional orthodontic techniques do not intrude posterior teeth effectively, and almost all methods result in anterior extrusion rather than posterior intrusion. New absolute anchorages (miniscrews and miniplates) are said to make posterior tooth intrusion possible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical success of a new method for molar intrusion with miniscrews and its probable accompanying side effects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten women with overerupted upper first molars participated in this study. Upper molar bands with brackets were cemented. Two miniscrews we

Strategic camouflage treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion (mandibular prognathism) using bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular anterior subapical osteotomy.

This case report presents the camouflage treatment that successfully improved the facial profile of a patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion using bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular anterior subapical osteotomy. The patient was an 18-year-old woman with chief complaints of crooked teeth and a protruded jaw. Camouflage treatment was chosen because she rejected orthognathic surgery under general anesthesia. A hybrid type of bone-borne rapid maxillary expander with palatal mini-implants was used to correct the transverse discrepancy, and a mandibular anterior subapical os

Camouflage treatment of skeletal class III malocclusion with asymmetry using a bone-borne rapid maxillary expander.

This case report presents the successful use of palatal mini-implants for rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular distalization in a skeletal Class III malocclusion. The patient was a 13-year-old girl with the chief complaint of facial asymmetry and a protruded chin. Camouflage orthodontic treatment was chosen, acknowledging the possibility of need for orthognathic surgery after completion of her growth. A bone-borne rapid expander (BBRME) was used to correct the transverse discrepancy and was then used as indirect anchorage for distalization of the lower dentition with Class III elastics. As

Nonsurgical correction of a severe anterior open bite with mandibular molar intrusion using mini-implants and the multiloop edgewise archwire technique.

This article reports the case of a 24-year-old man with a large anterior open bite, mild mandibular crowding, increased overjet, no passive lip sealing, and Angle Class I malocclusion. The treatment results were achieved by mandibular molar intrusion using 1.8 × 8.5-mm mini-implants (C-implants) inserted between the mandibular first and second molars bilaterally. A 2.5-mm molar intrusion and open-bite closure occurred within 8 months. The multiloop edgewise archwire technique helped to intrude the posterior teeth. Total treatment time was 20 months. Fifty months postretention records are also
