Gemcitabine-based versus fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy with or without platinum in unresectable biliary tract cancer: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: There is no standard palliative chemotherapy regimen in biliary tract cancers (BTC). Fluoropyrimidine or gemcitabine, with or without platinum, are most frequently used. We conducted this study to clarify the efficacy of palliative chemotherapy in BTC. METHODS: Patients with unresectable BTC treated with palliative chemotherapy between Oct 2001 and Aug 2006 at Seoul National University Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Histologically confirmed cases of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, extrahepatic bile duct cancer, and ampulla of Vater carcinoma were enro

[A long-term surviving patient with unresectable lung metastasis from colon cancer treated with intravenous administration of activated autologous lymphocytes and low-dose chemotherapy--a case report].

We herein report a case of long-term surviving patient who was treated with intravenous administration of activated autologous lymphocytes and low-dose chemotherapy. The patient was an 82-year-old female. She underwent radical resection for sigmoid colon cancer in 1998 and right lobectomy of the liver for metastatic liver tumor in 2001. A follow up CT revealed the metastasis to the bilateral lung on November 2003. Then she received a treatment with UFT plus low-dose CPT-11/CDDP and activated autologous lymphocytes. Although the response of the treatment was SD, the serum CEA level decreased to

Squamous cell carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct with metachronous para-aortic lymph node metastasis successfully treated with S-1 plus cisplatin.

The most common histological classification of bile duct cancer is adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is relatively rare. We report a case of a 78-year-old man with SCC of the extrahepatic bile duct associated with metachronous para-aortic lymph node metastasis. He had undergone subtotal stomach-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy. The pathological findings demonstrated moderately differentiated SCC of the distal extrahepatic bile duct (T1N1M0, stage IIB). 6 months after surgery, recurrence of the para-aortic lymph node was shown in abdominal CT. 5 courses of tegafur/gimeracil/otera

Serum diamine oxidase activity as a predictor of gastrointestinal toxicity and malnutrition due to anticancer drugs.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Objective evaluation of intestinal mucosal damage due to anticancer drugs is generally difficult. Serum diamine oxidase (DAO) activity is reported to reflect the integrity and maturity of the small intestinal mucosa. Therefore, we investigated whether serum DAO activity is an indicator of gastrointestinal toxicity or nutritional status in patients receiving chemotherapy. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 20 patients with unresectable metastatic gastric cancer who received oral S-1 (80 mg/m(2) ) on days 1-14, and intravenous cisplatin (60 mg/m(2) ) and docetaxel (50 mg/m(2

Resected tumor seeding in stomach wall due to endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a useful and relatively safe tool for the diagnosis and staging of pancreatic cancer. However, there have recently been several reports of tumor seeding after EUS-FNA of adenocarcinomas. A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to upper gastric pain. Examinations revealed a 20 mm mass in the pancreatic body, for which EUS-FNA was performed. The cytology of the lesion was adenocarcinoma, and the stage of the cancer was T3N0M0. The patient underwent surgery with curative intent, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with

[Antigenicity tests of a new antineoplastic agent S-1].

The antigenicity was tested of a new antineoplastic agent S-1 (a combination of tegafur (FT), CDHP and potassium oxonate (Oxo)) in mice and guinea pigs. 1. Male BALB/c or C3H/He mice were sensitized with S-1, CDHP, Oxo, and conjugates of CDHP (or Oxo) and human serum albumin (HSA). S-1 was administered by oral gavage, and the other compounds were administered intraperitoneally with adjuvant (alum). In the heterologous passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) test, using Sprague-Dawley rats as recipients, no IgE antibodies against S-1, CDHP, or Oxo were detected to any serum obtained from the sensit

Organophosphates and their impact on the global environment.

Serious intoxications and incidences due to misuse of organophosphorus insecticides (OP) have been reported for over three decades. In this meeting I am talking about the following three topics. (1) Epidemiological studies on the use of OP in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. The National Research Institute of Police Science (NRIPS) in Japan has published the annual report of the epidemiological studies on the criminal and suicide events. The numbers of the incidence of pesticides are approximately 22%-30% of the total incidences, during 1991 and 1996. The incidence of pesticides has been gradually

Prognostic impact of combination therapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin plus S-1 and subsequent conversion surgery for initially unresectable upper biliary tract cancers.

PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND: For the past decade, there have been few chemotherapy options for unresectable biliary tract cancer (BTC). Recently, however, combination therapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin plus S-1 (GCS) has been identified as a promising strategy. This retrospective study analyzes the clinical results of GCS therapy and subsequent conversion surgery (CS). METHOD: We analyzed the clinical data of 60 consecutive patients who received GCS therapy for unresectable upper BTC at our university hospital during the 5 years between September, 2018 and December, 2022. RESULTS: All patient
