Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on clinical and psychological aspects of temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) caused drastic changes in people's lifestyle that affected TMD characteristics through its physical and psychological influences. The aim of this study was to define the clinical and psychological characteristics of a large group of well-defined TMD patients and seek their differences between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to establish points of care to be emphasized in the post-pandemic era. METHODS: TMD patients diagnosed by the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) aged ≥ 18 were analyzed. Samples between S

[Operationalized psychodynamic diagnostics (OPD) in patients in a prodromal state of schizophrenia--an explorative study].

OBJECTIVES: To obtain data and hypotheses regarding the amelioration of risk estimation and preventive psychotherapy in patients in a prodromal state of schizophrenia by using OPD. METHODS: 20 participants with a prodromal condition--6 subjects far from psychosis and 14 close to psychosis--along with 10 patients with paranoid schizophrenia as reference group were examined using the first four OPD axes. RESULTS: Both groups differed considerably in all four axes. Compared to the schizophrenic participants, prodromal probands appear to have more favourable preconditions for therapy. Moreover,

[The population treated in the general psychiatric sector in 1993 and 1998. Clinical and demographic evolution].

BACKGROUND: The French information system in public psychiatry sectors does not collect morbidity data for the population being treated, estimated as more than a million persons in 1997. Consequently, two surveys were financed by the "Direction Générale de la Santé" and carried out in 1993 and 1998 in order to specify clinical, social and demographic characteristics of the patients. These surveys allowed a follow-up of evolutions according to the pathology and mode of treatment in a context where outpatient treatments are becoming increasingly frequent. METHODS: A census of the patients was m

Paranoid explanations of experience: a novel experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Paranoia is a common experience in the non-clinical population. We use a novel experimental methodology to investigate paranoid ideas in individuals without a history of mental illness. AIMS: We aimed to determine whether this paradigm could elicit unfounded paranoid thoughts and whether these thoughts could be predicted by factors from a cognitive model. METHOD: Fifty-eight individuals took part and completed measures assessing trait paranoia, mood, self and other schema and attributional style. They were exposed to two experimental events: 1) an interruption to the testing sess

Negative symptoms of familial schizophrenia breed true in unstable (vs. stable) cerebral-ventricle pedigrees.

A pattern of negative symptoms associated with a high rate of ongoing brain and ventricular instability has been described in a cohort of schizophrenia spectrum probands (patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder depressed and bipolar, and psychosis NOS) (Garver, D.L., Nair, T.R., Christensen, J.D., Holcomb, J., Ramberg, J., Kingsbury, S., 1999. Differential patterns of premorbid functioning, symptoms and neuroleptic response in stable and unstable ventricular-volume schizophrenia. Neuropsychopharmacology 20, in press). The present study contrasts the prevalence of negative symptom

Behavioural disturbances following Japanese B encephalitis.

Clinically, Japanese B encephalitis (JBE) is often overlooked as its occurrence in Western countries is rare. However, its neurological, cognitive and psychiatric sequelae constitute a major public health problem in the Far East where JBE is endemic. European and American subjects may however experience the JBE when returning from a Far East journey. In such cases, misdiagnosis is frequent because of the unawareness of psychiatrists and physicians. The present review, therefore, documents the behavioural and cognitive sequelae of JBE. This reactivates the debate concerning the vaccination agai

The paranoid optimist: an integrative evolutionary model of cognitive biases.

Human cognition is often biased, from judgments of the time of impact of approaching objects all the way through to estimations of social outcomes in the future. We propose these effects and a host of others may all be understood from an evolutionary psychological perspective. In this article, we elaborate error management theory (EMT; Haselton & Buss, 2000). EMT predicts that if judgments are made under uncertainty, and the costs of false positive and false negative errors have been asymmetric over evolutionary history, selection should have favored a bias toward making the least costly error

What makes one person paranoid and another person anxious? The differential prediction of social anxiety and persecutory ideation in an experimental situation.

BACKGROUND: In recent years a close association between anxiety and persecutory ideation has been established, contrary to the traditional division of neurosis and psychosis. Nonetheless, the two experiences are distinct. The aim of this study was to identify factors that distinguish the occurrence of social anxiety and paranoid thoughts in an experimental situation. METHOD: Two hundred non-clinical individuals broadly representative of the UK general population were assessed on a range of psychological factors, experienced a neutral virtual reality social environment, and then completed stat

The collapsing perimeter. A commentary on life, death, and death-in-life.

The individual is encased in an existential, phenomenological space that has the capacity to contract or expand, to isolate itself, or to join with others. An analysis is provided of how this individual space capsule functions under varying circumstances, such as depression, schizophrenia, sociopathy, divorce, child-battery, aging, death, overpopulation, cultural disruption, and execution.

Alteration of pain recognition in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia patients display impaired recognition of their own emotions and those of others and deficits in several domains of empathy. The first-person experience of pain and observing others in pain normally trigger strong emotional mechanisms. We therefore hypothesized that schizophrenia patients would display impaired recognition and categorization of both their own pain and the pain of others. METHODS: We studied 29 patients (18 men/11 women; 36 ± 13 years old) with paranoid schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and 27 healthy volunteers (20 men/7 women; 31 ± 9 years old) matched

Cognitive and emotional differences between abusive and non-abusive fathers.

OBJECTIVE: Abusive fathers perpetrate a substantial portion of child physical abuse. Despite this, little is known about how they differ from non-abusive fathers. This study compared a broad range of cognitive and affective factors between physically abusive and non-abusive fathers. METHODS: Abusive (n=24) and non-abusive (n=25) fathers completed standard measures assessing their experience and expression of anger, mental health, parenting stress, and their empathy and perceptions of children's socio-emotional signals. RESULTS: Abusive fathers differed from comparisons on almost all construc

[Risk assessment of thrombotic events in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in the acute state: the 'fibrinodynamics' technology].

AIM: To assess the risk of thrombotic events in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder based on 'fibrinodynamics' technology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 76 women, including 38 with paranoid schizophrenia (F20.0), 18 with schizoaffective disorder (F25.1) in the acute stage, and 20 healthy controls, participated in the study. The technology includes the study of coagulation and fibrinolysis, Karmin author software, and calculation of peak time and hemostasis potential of spontaneous clots. Growth and lysis of fibrin clots were studied in plasma purified from platelets. A

Perceptions of hostility by persons with and without persecutory delusions.

INTRODUCTION: Current models of paranoia propose that ambiguous situations, in which cues regarding the intentions of others are lacking, may be perceived as hostile by persons with persecutory delusions (PD). Thus, a social-cognitive bias for the perception of hostility may be present. In this study, the Ambiguous Intentions Hostility Questionnaire (AIHQ) was used to present situations that are ambiguous regarding the intentions of others. It was predicted that on the AIHQ, persons with PD would show greater levels of perceived hostility, blame, and aggression than both psychiatric and nonpsy

The psychological effect of an urban environment on individuals with persecutory delusions: the Camberwell walk study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have found that individuals who live in urban areas are at increased risk of developing psychosis. However it is unknown whether exposure to urban environments exacerbates psychotic symptoms in people who have a diagnosed psychotic disorder. The aim of the study was to examine the psychological and clinical effects of exposure to one specific deprived urban environment on individuals with persecutory delusions. It was predicted that the urban environment would affect emotional and reasoning processes highlighted in a cognitive model of persecutory delusions
