The interactions between sleep difficulties and clinical features in children with rare genetic syndromes: a structural equation modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Sleep difficulties are common in children with rare genetic syndromes and are associated with clinical features such as behaviours that challenge and mental health difficulties. This study aimed to further clarify the role of sleep difficulties in children's clinical outcomes by (1) describing profiles of sleep difficulties in syndromes that had received little or no detailed sleep investigation, such as KBG and Kleefstra syndrome; (2) statistically controlling the interactions between clinical features when examining the associations with sleep difficulties; and (3) exploring the

Polysomnography findings in sleep-related eating disorder: a systematic review and case report.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) consists of recurrent episodes of uncontrolled, involuntary eating and drinking 1-3 h after falling asleep with partial or full unconsciousness. This condition is diagnosed based on interviews with the patients affected and the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders. However, polysomnography (PSG) is not necessary to confirm this disease. This systematic review aims to evaluate the findings of PSG in SRED patients. METHODS: For this systematic review, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched in Febr

Validation of the sleep disturbance scale for children (SDSC) in infants and toddlers from mainland China.

UNLABELLED: The sleep disturbance scale for children (SDSC) has been validated in the population of Chinese children (aged 5-16 years) and has good psychometric properties. However, valid assessment tools for sleep problems in the population of infants and young children from mainland China are relatively scarce, and rates of screening and management for pediatric sleep problems are low. OBJECTIVE: This study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of SDSC among infants (aged 6-36 months), and to provide a reference for expanding the application of the SDSC for Chinese infants (SDSC-I).

Sleep disorders in people with type 2 diabetes and associated health outcomes: a review of the literature.

Sleep disorders are linked to development of type 2 diabetes and increase the risk of developing diabetes complications. Treating sleep disorders might therefore play an important role in the prevention of diabetes progression. However, the detection and treatment of sleep disorders are not part of standardised care for people with type 2 diabetes. To highlight the importance of sleep disorders in people with type 2 diabetes, we provide a review of the literature on the prevalence of sleep disorders in type 2 diabetes and the association between sleep disorders and health outcomes, such as gly

Developmental-behavioral profiles in children with autism spectrum disorder and co-occurring gastrointestinal symptoms.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequently reported in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We evaluated the frequency and severity of GI symptoms in preschool-aged children with ASD compared to participants with typical development (TD). Our goal was to ascertain whether GI symptoms are associated with differences in sex or developmental and behavioral measures. Participants were between 2 and 3.5 years of age and included 255 children with ASD (184 males/71 females) and 129 age-matched TD controls (75 males/54 females). A parent interview was used to assess GI symptoms (abdominal

Clinical Features and Pathophysiology of Disorders of Arousal in Adults: A Window Into the Sleeping Brain.

Introduction: Disorders of Arousal (DoA) are NREM parasomnias that have been typically regarded as self-limited childhood manifestations. It is now clear that DoA can persist in adults, often presenting with distinctive characteristics. So far, few studies have described the clinical course and characteristics of DoA in adulthood, therefore a large part of their semiology is ignored. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical manifestations of DoA in an adult population and to provide a pathophysiological interpretation of their features. Methods: We screened our database for all 1,600

Sleep and sleep disorders.

Sleep is a complex neurological state, with its primary function of providing rest and restoring the body's energy levels. The importance of sleep could be seen from the fact that people spend about one-third of their lifespan in sleep. Normal human sleep is divided into non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and the alteration between NREM and REM occurs about 4-5 times during a night of normal sleep. Human NREM sleep could be classified into four stages, namely, stage I, II, III and IV, representing successively deeper stages of sleep. Sleep is an active rhythmic n

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder as a Key Predictor of Cognitive Decline: Insights from a Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia. Mounting evidence positions RBD as a critical prodromal indicator of synucleinopathies-particularly Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA)-with a significant link to progressive cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: To explore the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms connecting RBD with cognitive impairment, to delineate the neuropsychological profile of the affected individuals, and to critically evaluate the current diagnostic tools and therapeutic challeng

Safety profile of ramelteon from the perspective of physicians and pharmacists: a 20-year real-world pharmacovigilance analysis based on the FAERS database.

BACKGROUND: Ramelteon is the first selective melatonin receptor agonist approved by the FDA, demonstrating significant clinical value in improving sleep latency and sleep quality in patients with insomnia. However, its long-term adverse effects have not been fully evaluated. This study analyzes adverse events associated with ramelteon based on data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: Case reports submitted by physicians and pharmacists were extracted from the FAERS database from the first quarter of 2005 to the third quarter of 2024. Signal detection was per

The clinical and sleep manifestations in children with FOXG1 syndrome.

FOXG1 syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder associated with severe cognitive dysfunction, autistic behavior, and early-onset hyperkinetic movement disorders. Patients have also been reported to experience sleep disturbances. However, these findings are mainly based on subjective caregivers' reports, and limited by small case numbers. Moreover, no studies using objective evaluation tools, such as actigraphy, have been reported. We analyzed the clinical and sleep manifestations of children with FOXG1 syndrome registered in the FOXG1 Research Foundation Patient Registry database. A total

Sleep disorders and polysomnography findings in patients with autoimmune encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders in patients with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) are increasingly reported. Early recognition and treatment have significant importance regarding the potential of sleep disorders' effect on morbidity and even mortality. There are a limited number of studies related to polysomnography (PSG) in these patients. Here, we report the clinical and PSG data of patients with AE and sleep disorders, with a particular interest in sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD). METHODS: Seventeen patients with diagnosed AE and acute or subacute onset sleep complaints who underwent vide

Disturbance of rapid eye movement sleep in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2.

Five genetically confirmed spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) patients were admitted to our sleep laboratory for two all-night video-polysomnographies. A standard montage was used, including electroencephalography, vertical and horizontal electrooculography, electromyography of mental, submental, and tibialis anterior muscles, and respiratory monitoring. Four of five SCA2 patients had insufficient muscle atonia during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. All patients exhibited myoclonic jerks during REM sleep, while elaborated behavior was not observed in the video. Abnormal motor control during

Can We Reduce the Diagnostic Burden of Sleep Disorders? A Single-Centre Study of Subjective and Objective Sleep-Related Diagnostic Parameters.

Background and Objectives: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in society and require focused attention within healthcare systems. While patient history, reported complaints, and subjective sleep questionnaires can provide initial insights into potential sleep issues, polysomnography (PSG) remains the gold standard for diagnosing various sleep disorders. However, long waiting times for PSG appointments in many healthcare facilities pose challenges for timely diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of subjective measures, including patient-reported parameters

Monogenic epilepsies exhibit distinct sleep endophenotypes.

Monogenic epilepsies are 1.6 times more likely to be treatment-resistant compared to other epilepsies, emphasizing the need for additional therapeutic strategies. Sleep dysfunction beyond sleep-related breathing disorders is common yet insufficiently characterized and treated in monogenic epilepsies. We therefore sought to study sleep phenotypes across these epilepsies, examine associations with seizure severity, and assess the diagnostic rate of sleep disorders. From 2,519 individuals enrolled in the Epilepsy Genetics Research Project at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, we identified the

Ictal SPECT in patients with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder.

Rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder is a rapid eye movement parasomnia clinically characterized by acting out dreams due to disinhibition of muscle tone in rapid eye movement sleep. Up to 80-90% of the patients with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder develop neurodegenerative disorders within 10-15 years after symptom onset. The disorder is reported in 45-60% of all narcoleptic patients. Whether rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder is also a predictor for neurodegeneration in narcolepsy is not known. Although the pathophysiology causing the disinhibition of muscle tone

Presence of quintuple dhfr N51, C59, S108 - dhps A437, K540 mutations in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from pregnant women and the general population in Nanoro, Burkina Faso.

Sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is only used for intermittent preventive treatment during pregnancy (IPTp) in most Sub-Saharan African countries. However, there are concerns about the efficacy of IPTp-SP because of increasing resistance. Combinations of point mutations in the dhps and dhfr genes of Plasmodium falciparum are associated with SP resistance, in particular the quintuple dhfr (N51, C59, S108) - dhps (codons A437, K540) mutant. In Nanoro, Burkina Faso, filter paper samples from pregnant women at first antenatal care visit and at delivery plus samples from the general population (GP)

Sleep disturbances and dermatology-related quality of life in children with cutaneous mastocytosis: a patient-centered perspective.

UNLABELLED: Pediatric cutaneous mastocytosis is a heterogeneous mast cell disorder that typically presents as cutaneous disease with a benign and self-limiting course. Despite its favorable prognosis, children with cutaneous mastocytosis may experience symptom-related effects on daily functioning that have not been comprehensively characterized. Data on sleep disturbances and QoL in pediatric cutaneous mastocytosis, unfortunately, remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sleep parameters and dermatology-related QoL and assess whether disease severity modifies the a

[Sleep disorders in psychiatric diseases. Epidemiological aspects].

Very few epidemiological surveys have specifically studied relationships between sleep disturbances and psychiatric diseases. In this review, we preferred to use the classification proposed in 1979 by the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers. It includes four main categories: insomnias, excessive sleepiness, troubles of the wake/sleep schedule and parasomnias. Evaluating psychiatric disorders among general populations is easier owing to DSM III and DSM III-R criteria, but there are not equivalent criteria in evaluating sleep disorders. It is almost impossible to realize polysomnographic reco
