A 3-year prospective study of 244 children (aged 5 months to 17 years) with sensorineural hearing loss of unknown cause revealed that 57 children (23%) had radiographic evidence of abnormalities of the temporal bone, detected by computed tomography scan, and/or progression of sensorineural hearing loss. Eosinophilic otitis media (EOM) is a rare, intractable, and chronic form of otitis media. The associated hearing loss often progresses to deafness, necessitating cochlear implantation (CI). A retrospective series is presented of 32 cases of spontaneous labyrinthine window rupture proven at tympanotomy. There was no prior history of stapedectomy or other middle ear surgery. Seventy-eight per cent of cases involved the round window, in contrast to previous series on the subject. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of a new device, the Meniett, in the treatment of Meniere's disease. The device delivers pressure pulses to the middle ear through a ventilating tube in the tympanic membrane at a frequency of 6 Hz for 0.6 second. After rising to a pressure level of 1.2 kPa, the pressure oscillates between 0.4 and 1.2 kPa. It is believed that the pressure changes are conveyed to the inner ear, inducing a transport of fluids via the pressure outlets and thus reducing the endolymphatic hydrops.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnostic value of exploratory tympanotomy in sudden sensorineural hearing loss remains controversial. This study and review were performed to identify the incidence of perilymphatic fistula in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. A stapes gusher is an alarming situation occurring during stapes surgery for mixed hearing loss. It is characterized by the sudden profuse flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the middle ear and external ear canal after opening the vestibule of the inner ear. Controversy exists surrounding the diagnosis of spontaneous perilymphatic fistula. In an effort to help resolve this controversy the author conducted a review of the literature as well as a review of 212 of his patients who underwent surgical exploration for suspected perilymphatic fistula. Interpretation of the literature reviewed was hampered by the lack of a uniformly accepted definition for the word spontaneous. Dorland's Medical Dictionary defines spontaneous as that which occurs without external influence. Webster's Dictionary, on the other hand, provides a much more confining definition
