A calibration method used for volumetric measurement of orthodontically induced root resorption craters.

The aim of this study was to measure the accuracy and reproducibility of volumetric estimations obtained by a commercial software used to measure resorption craters induced by orthodontic forces. Twenty human first maxillary premolars were selected and divided into light and heavy force groups with 25 and 225 g of force applied to the upper-right first premolars, respectively. The contralateral teeth served as controls. Samples were extracted and prepared for SEM stereoimaging after 28 days of force application. Volumetric measurements of these resorption craters were generated by the software

Type of maxillary segment mobilization affects three-dimensional nasal morphology.

BACKGROUND: Surgical mobilization of the maxillary segment affects nasal morphology. This study assessed the impact of the type of maxillary mobilization on the three-dimensional (3D) nasal morphometry. METHODS: Pre- and postsurgery cone beam computed tomography-derived facial image datasets of consecutive patients who underwent two-jaw orthognathic surgery were reviewed. Using preoperative 3D facial models as the positional reference of the skeletal framework, 12-month postoperative 3D facial models were classified into four types of maxillary mobilizations (advancement [n = 83], setback [n

Movement patterns of the C-stem femoral component: an RSA study of 33 primary total hip arthroplasties followed for two years.

We used roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis to follow 33 C-stem femoral components for two years after primary total hip arthroplasty. All components migrated distally and posteriorly within the cement mantle. The mean distal migration was 1.35 mm (sd 0.62) at two years and the mean posterior migration was 1.35 mm (sd 0.69) at two years. All the femoral components rotated into retroversion with a mean rotation at two years of 1.9 degrees (sd 1.1). For all other directions, the prosthesis was stable up to two years. Compared with other tapered prostheses, the distal migration of the C-stem

A case of Jack Russel Terrier scavenging: Images and three dimensional models for forensic interpretation.

Distinguishing between ante-mortem and post-mortem domestic dog injuries is fundamental in order to correctly find the cause of the death. Although fatal aggressions are chiefly perpetrated by pit bull-type dogs, small dogs are responsible for a significant share of animal bites and can cause high-degree injuries. On the other side, indoor and outdoor scavenging can hinder forensic investigation, consuming parts of the body where crucial forensic features like bruises and wounds have been inflicted. In the case we present, a man died after falling down his house stairs because of a traumatic i

A 3D morphometric follow-up analysis after frontoorbital advancement in non-syndromic craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: Frontoorbital advancement (FOA) in patients with non-syndromic craniosynostosis mainly addresses the aesthetic and functional correction of the frontoorbital region. To help define the operative strategy and any follow-up assessments after surgical correction, objective parameters describing the critical regions of skull deformity are essential. Based on 3D morphometric analysis, new parameters for the documentation of changes of the frontoorbital bandeau were developed in a prospective study. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In a prospective series, 13 children with non-syndromic craniosyno

Radiation-free spinometry adds to the predictive power of historical height loss in clinical vertebral fracture assessment.

UNLABELLED: After introducing radiation-free spinometry as a diagnostic tool to predict prevalent vertebral fractures, its validity and comparison with established tools such as historical height loss (HHL) was missing. This study shows that radiation-free spinometry is valid and its application adds predictive power to the ability of HHL to assess presence of vertebral fractures. INTRODUCTION: Recently, radiation-free spinometry was introduced to identify patients with vertebral fractures (VFs). The goals of this study were to validate previous findings and to test the predictive accuracy of

Spinal alignment in low back pain patients and age-related side effects: a multivariate cross-sectional analysis of video rasterstereography back shape reconstruction data.

PURPOSE: Spinal form in the sagittal plane and asymmetries of spinal alignment in the frontal plane were identified earlier to be associated with low back pain. This study was aiming at investigating whether age was influencing the significance of these findings. METHODS: Spinal alignment of 155 older and 58 younger low back pain patients was investigated using non-invasive video rasterstereography and compared to 192 pain free controls. Trunk inclination and imbalance, pelvis tilt and torsion, and the thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angle served as dependent variables, which were analy

Revisiting the microsurgical anatomy of the sagittal stratum and surgical implications: fiber microdissection and tractography study.

OBJECTIVE: The term "sagittal stratum" was coined by Heinrich Sachs in 1892 to define a parasagittally oriented white matter layer at the temporo-occipital cortex. Although this term has been widely used for more than 100 years, the description, classification, borders, and involved fibers of the structure vary among authors and remain imprecise. Through fiber microdissection and tractography, the authors aimed to define the sagittal stratum and resolve the uncertainty by revealing the relationship of this structure to other cerebral white matter pathways and the orientation of fibers in it.

Reimagining Hair Science: A New Approach to Classify Curly Hair Phenotypes via New Quantitative Geometric and Structural Mechanical Parameters.

Hair is a natural polymeric composite primarily composed of tight macrobundles of keratin proteins, which are highly responsive to external stimuli, similarly to the hydrogels and other natural fibrous gel systems like collagen and fibrin.Hair and its appearance play a significant role in human society. As a highly complex biocomposite system, it has been traditionally challenging to characterize and thus develop personal care products. Over the last few decades, a significant societal paradigm shift occurred among those with curly hair, accepting the natural morphological shape of their curls
