Spatiotemporal evolution of a pine wilt disease model integrating infectious disease transmission and predator-prey interactions.

Previous modeling studies on pine wilt disease have largely been confined to either standalone epidemic models or predator-prey models, overlooking the coupling between these two mechanisms within the ecosystem. A coupled model is developed that integrates predator-prey interactions with the transmission mechanism of pine wilt disease, thereby enabling a more accurate representation of the spatiotemporal dynamics of biological control and disease transmission. The theoretical analysis primarily establishes that, under given threshold conditions, several key subsystems are persistent, and furth

Hydrogen sulfide as a potent predator-derived kairomone mediating fear-related responses in mice.

Olfaction plays a critical role in survival across species, notably in threat detection. Volatile olfactory molecules signaling the presence of a danger in the environment share a specific chemical signature, particularly sulfur-containing moieties detected by the mouse olfactory Grueneberg ganglion (GG) neurons. Our study focuses on one of the most toxic air pollutant, hydrogen sulfide (H2S). We reveal here a novel facet of H2S which acts as a danger signal, a kairomone alerting the prey for the presence of nearby predators as H2S can originate from meat-eater secretions. H2S activates the cy

Prey-size plastics are invading larval fish nurseries.

Life for many of the world's marine fish begins at the ocean surface. Ocean conditions dictate food availability and govern survivorship, yet little is known about the habitat preferences of larval fish during this highly vulnerable life-history stage. Here we show that surface slicks, a ubiquitous coastal ocean convergence feature, are important nurseries for larval fish from many ocean habitats at ecosystem scales. Slicks had higher densities of marine phytoplankton (1.7-fold), zooplankton (larval fish prey; 3.7-fold), and larval fish (8.1-fold) than nearby ambient waters across our study re

Phenylacetonitrile in locusts facilitates an antipredator defense by acting as an olfactory aposematic signal and cyanide precursor.

Many aggregating animals use aposematic signals to advertise their toxicity to predators. However, the coordination between aposematic signals and toxins is poorly understood. Here, we reveal that phenylacetonitrile (PAN) acts as an olfactory aposematic signal and precursor of hypertoxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) to protect gregarious locusts from predation. We found that PAN biosynthesis from phenylalanine is catalyzed by CYP305M2, a novel gene encoding a cytochrome P450 enzyme in gregarious locusts. The RNA interference (RNAi) knockdown of CYP305M2 increases the vulnerability of gregarious locu

Iron and iron oxide nanoparticles are highly toxic to Culex quinquefasciatus with little non-target effects on larvivorous fishes.

The control of filariasis vectors has been enhanced in several areas, but there are main challenges, including increasing resistance to insecticides and lack of cheap and eco-friendly products. The toxicity of iron (Fe0) and iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles has been scarcely investigated yet. We studied the larvicidal and pupicidal activity of Fe0 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles against Culex quinquefasciatus. Fe0 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles produced by green (using a Ficus natalensis aqueous extract) and chemical nanosynthesis, respectively, were analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR spectroscopy,

Pre-anthropocene mercury residues in North American freshwater fish.

Mercury (Hg) has been entering the environment from both natural and anthropogenic sources for millennia, and humans have been influencing its environmental transport and fate from well before the Industrial Revolution. Exposure to Hg (as neurotoxic monomethylmercury [MeHg]) occurs primarily through consumption of finfish, shellfish, and marine mammals, and regulatory limits for MeHg concentrations in fish tissue have steadily decreased as information on its health impacts has become available. These facts prompted us to consider 2 questions: 1) What might the MeHg levels in fish tissue have b

Genetic basis of phenotypic plasticity for predator-induced morphological defenses in anuran tadpole, Rana pirica, using cDNA subtraction and microarray analysis.

Anuran tadpoles (Rana pirica) are induced to develop a higher tail and a bulgy body as predator-specific morphological responses when they are exposed to predatory larval salamanders. Subtractive hybridization was performed using induced tadpole body skin and normal tadpoles' body skin. A total of 196 clones showed higher expression, and 104 clones showed lower expression, when they formed bulgy bodies. In the subtraction, carboxypeptidase B, trypsinogen, elastase I, fibrinogen, elastase II, triacyl-glycerol lipase, and alpha1-antitrypsin genes showed lower expression. In contrast, RT-like pro

Differential trends in mercury concentrations in double-crested cormorant populations of the Canadian Prairies.

Mercury and selenium concentrations were measured in double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus), piscivorous fish, and common prey items in five lakes in two ecoregions in Saskatchewan, Canada. Hg and Se concentrations in cormorants were within the natural ranges of birds living in un-impacted sites. Site explained a significant proportion of the variation in total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in both cormorant breast muscle and livers. Birds nesting on more northern lakes in the Boreal Plain ecoregion (THg range 0.11-1.06 and 0.26-9.27 μg g(-1) wet weight, for breas

Fatalities due to indigenous and exotic species in Florida.

Florida's climate is suitable for many potentially hazardous animals, including both indigenous and exotic species, which are frequently kept as in zoos or as pets. This has resulted in many unforeseen fatal encounters between animals and the ever expanding human population. While the literature and knowledge pool for more common types of deaths referred to medical examiner/coroner's offices is abundant, the appreciation of wildlife and exotic pet-related deaths is far less widespread. We report seven animal attack-related deaths that occurred in Florida. The inflicted injuries included blunt

Independently evolved upper jaw protrusion mechanisms show convergent hydrodynamic function in teleost fishes.

A protrusible upper jaw has independently evolved multiple times within teleosts and has been implicated in the success of two groups in particular: Acanthomorpha and Cypriniformes. We use digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) to compare suction feeding flow dynamics in a representative of each of these clades: goldfish and bluegill. Using DPIV, we contrast the spatial pattern of flow, the temporal relationship between flow and head kinematics, and the contribution of jaw protrusion to the forces exerted on prey. As expected, the spatial patterns of flow were similar in the two species. Ho

Differential modulation of hippocampal plasticity in a non-noxious conflict model for anxiety.

Modulation of synaptic strength may underlie stress-induced changes in cognitive ability. Long-term memory formation underpinning fear and anxiety behaviors, such as those seen in post-traumatic stress and phobic disorders, is thought to be dependent on amygdalo-hippocampal interactions. In most models, however, painful stimuli are used to induced stress and anxiety. Here, the effects of a novel conflict model, developed to generate a more naturalistic model of anxiety, utilizing two non-noxious stressors (predator (cat) odor and light), on hippocampus plasticity were determined. Exposure to t

Nesting biology of four Tetrapedia species in trap-nests (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Tetrapediini).

The nests used in this study were obtained from trap-nests (tubes of cardboard and cut bamboo stems) placed on Santa Carlota Farm (Itaoca Section-IS, Santana Section-SS and Cerrado-Ce), Cajuru, SP, Brazil. The number of nests and corresponding species obtained were as follows: 516 nests of T. curvitarsis, 104 of T. rugulosa, 399 of T. diversipes and 98 of T. gamfaloi. The most abundant species from SS and Ce was T. curvitarsis, and from IS it was T. diversipes. In general, most nests were collected during the hot and wet season (September to April). The nests were constructed with sand and an

Not all 'predator odours' are equal: cat odour but not 2,4,5 trimethylthiazoline (TMT; fox odour) elicits specific defensive behaviours in rats.

The behavioural responses to two commonly used 'predator odours' were assessed in male Wistar rats. Cat odour was presented to rats in the form of a piece of collar that had been worn by a domestic cat. Fox odour was presented in an equivalent piece of (unworn) collar that had been impregnated with 2,4,5 Trimethylthiazoline (TMT)-an extract of fox faeces. Other rats were exposed to collars containing Triethylamine (TEA), a putrid fishy smell, or formaldehyde, which has an acrid irritating smell. Experiment 1 showed that rats approached cat odour, TMT and TEA significantly less than they did an

Flocks in focus: Automated video analysis of spatial behavior for stress detection in aviary-housed laying hens.

Understanding stress responses in laying hens is crucial for improving welfare in commercial systems, yet real-time behavioral indicators remain underexplored. This study evaluated the use of automated spatial behavior monitoring to detect stress-induced behavioral changes in commercial-density laying hen flocks housed in aviary systems. The objectives were to (1) visualize and quantify vertical movement patterns and litter use over time and across flocks, and (2) assess behavioral changes in response to 3 stress contexts: visual (predatory bird), auditory (thunder sound), and frustrative (del

Grey wolf optimizer with self-repulsion strategy for feature selection.

Feature selection is one of the most critical steps in big data analysis. Accurately extracting correct features from massive data can effectively improve the accuracy of big data processing algorithms. However, traditional grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithms often suffer from slow convergence and a tendency to fall into local optima, limiting their effectiveness in high-dimensional feature selection tasks. To address these limitations, we propose a novel feature selection algorithm called grey wolf optimizer with self-repulsion strategy (GWO-SRS). In GWO-SRS, the hierarchical structure of th

Lateral eyes direct principal eyes as jumping spiders track objects.

One way of circumventing the functional tradeoffs on eye design [1,2] is to have different eyes for different tasks. For example, jumping spiders (Salticidae), known for elaborate, visually guided courtship and predatory behavior [3], view the same object simultaneously with two of their four pairs of eyes: the antero-lateral eyes (ALEs) and the principal eyes (reviewed in [2]; Figure 1A). The ALEs, with immobile lenses and retinas, wide fields of view, and hyperacute sensitivity to moving stimuli [4], are structurally distinct from the principal eyes, which have the best spatial acuity known

Variable Substrate Preference among Phospholipase D Toxins from Sicariid Spiders.

Venoms of the sicariid spiders contain phospholipase D enzyme toxins that can cause severe dermonecrosis and even death in humans. These enzymes convert sphingolipid and lysolipid substrates to cyclic phosphates by activating a hydroxyl nucleophile present in both classes of lipid. The most medically relevant substrates are thought to be sphingomyelin and/or lysophosphatidylcholine. To better understand the substrate preference of these toxins, we used (31)P NMR to compare the activity of three related but phylogenetically diverse sicariid toxins against a diverse panel of sphingolipid and lys

Insecticide residues in Australian plague locusts (Chortoicetes terminifera Walker) after ultra-low volume aerial application of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion.

The need for locust control throughout eastern Australia during spring 2010 provided an opportunity to quantify residues of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion on nymphs of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera Walker. Residues were collected across the different physiological states--live, dead, and debilitated (characterized by ease of capture, erratic hopping, and the inability to remain upright)--of locust nymphs observed following exposure to fenitrothion. The time course of residue depletion for 72 h after spraying was quantified, and residue-per-unit dose valu

Knocking on Heaven's Door: Are Novel Invaders Necessarily Facing Naïve Native Species on Islands?

The impact of alien predator species on insular native biota has often been attributed to island prey naïveté (i.e. lack of, or inefficient, anti-predator behavior). Only rarely, however, has the concept of island prey naïveté been tested, and then only a posteriori (i.e. hundreds or thousands of years after alien species introduction). The presence of native or anciently introduced predators or competitors may be crucial for the recognition and development of adaptive behavior toward unknown predators or competitors of the same archetype (i.e. a set of species that occupy a similar ecological
