The authors report a rare case of multiple intracranial fetuses in fetu, fulfilling Willis' traditional criteria, which include an axial and appendicular skeleton with surrounding organized tissue. This case was ascertained from studies of a full-term female neonate who presented with ventriculomegaly. A CT scan showed intracranial calcifications that were suggestive of an axial skeleton. Her birth weight was 3.176 kg (50th-75th percentile), length was 52 cm (90th percentile), head circumference was 35 cm (50th-75th percentile), and Apgar scores were 7 and 8 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. Studies of the shoulder girdle are in most cases restricted to morphological comparisons and rarely aim at elucidating function in a strictly biomechanical sense. To fill this gap, we investigated the basic functional conditions that occur in the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle of primates by means of mechanics. Because most of nonhuman primate locomotion is essentially quadrupedal walking-although on very variable substrates-our analysis started with quadrupedal postures. We identified the mechanical situation at the beginning, middle, and end of the load-bearing stance phase by constructi

UNLABELLED: Study Type--Therapy (case series) Level of Evidence What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Renal cancer is increasingly diagnosed when tumours are small and asymptomatic, during routine abdominal imaging. Whilst surgery is an effective and potentially curative option, it carries a significant risk of complications. Recent work suggests that thermally ablative therapies (RFA, cryotherapy, HIFU) may be suitable minimally invasive treatment options in selected patients. The success of extracorporeal HIFU has been limited by the abdominal wall and rib-cage limiting e

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In pectus excavatum (PE) patients owing to the location of the heart in the chest cavity, the most affected site of compression by the depressed chest wall is the right heart, and surgical repair has shown to provide a significant relief in the RH cavities compression. Our aim was to explore the relationship between the site of right cardiac compression, chest wall indexes (CT-CWI) and the sternal torsion angle (STA) based on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and computed tomography (CT) among PE patients.
METHODS: We included PE patients with no previous surgical correctio

BACKGROUND: 99mTc tetrofosmin is predominantly cleared by the hepatobiliary system and its scan is analogous to a cholescintigraphy. The radiopharmaceutical may be localized in the bone marrow. During cardiac acquisition, when the area being viewed includes the lower thorax and abdomen, abnormalities of the liver, gallbladder and kidneys, and the radioactivity in the oesophagus, stomach and bowel, as well as bone marrow uptake, can be depicted by routine raw data cine images. Excluding the intrathoracic abnormalities, these abdominal abnormalities are illustrated in this paper.

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific dosimetry before patient treatment plays a crucial role in radiotherapy (RT) treatment. Absolute point dosimetry and relative dosimetry using homogeneous phantom are the regular methods which are employed for dose verification in RT department. However, this method does not imitate the realistic radiation interaction taking place inside the patient's body as it is heterogeneous in nature. Hence, to perform the relative dosimetry inside the heterogeneous medium which can very well replicate the actual patient scenario, in the present work, we studied the radiologica

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) impairs the function of the diaphragm by placing it at a mechanical disadvantage, shortening its operating length and changing the mechanical linkage between its various parts. This makes the diaphragm's contraction less effective in raising and expanding the lower rib cage, thereby increasing the work of breathing and reducing the functional capacity.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare the effects of diaphragmatic stretch and manual diaphragm release technique on diaphragmatic excursion in patients with COPD.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Malformations of the front chest wall are congenital defects that have been reported since the seventeenth century and which include the clinical syndromes of funnel chest, pigeon chest and Poland's syndrome. Although they have been reported for such a long time, their pathogenesis is in many ways still unknown and the theories proposed up until now reveal uncertain and unsatisfactory findings. Attempts to gather precise information regarding their real incidence are equally ineffective given that frequently those cases which are not particularly severe are not referred fo

Simulation-based training is an essential component of modern medical education, particularly for invasive procedures such as chest tube insertion and thoracentesis, where incorrect technique may lead to serious complications. The aim of this technical report is to describe the development and implementation of an anatomically accurate thoracic training model created using computed tomography (CT) data, three-dimensional (3D) printing, and silicone molding technologies. CT data from an anonymized institutional imaging database were segmented to create a three-dimensional model of the rib cage,

Objective: Analyses of crash data have shown that older, obese, and/or female occupants have a higher risk of injury in frontal crashes compared to the rest of the population. The objective of this study was to use parametric finite element (FE) human models to assess the increased injury risks and identify safety concerns for these vulnerable populations. Methods: We sampled 100 occupants based on age, sex, stature, and body mass index (BMI) to span a wide range of the U.S. adult population. The target anatomical geometry for each of the 100 models was predicted by the statistical geometry mo

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine the incidence and outcomes of intramammary in-transit sentinel lymph nodes (IMSLN) from primary malignant melanoma (MM) of the trunk. We hypothesize that regional metastasis to the breast from anterior trunk MM also occurs via the lymphatic system to these intramammary in-transit sentinel lymph nodes.
BACKGROUND: MM is the most common solid tumor metastasis to the breast. The mechanism of intramammary (IM) metastasis is generally attributed to hematogenous rather than lymphatic spread.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records from all patients

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart diseases are the most common congenital malformations, affecting 4 to 9 per 1000 children, with increasing global prevalence. As surgical mortality rates decline, the focus has shifted toward improving the quality of life and perioperative outcomes for pediatric patients. Multidisciplinary rehabilitation, including osteopathic care, is increasingly incorporated into recovery programs. Osteopathic manipulative treatment combines manual techniques with lifestyle guidance to alleviate postoperative pain and promote recovery. This project report describes the impact of

BACKGROUND: Changes in coronal curve type and curve span may be linked to spinal and rib cage deformities. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend the potential impact of these changes on brace treatment. This study aims to investigate the relationship between curve progression and change in coronal curve type and curve span in braced patients, and to compare the coronal balance and change in apical vertebral between patients with and without curve pattern change.
METHODS: Two hundred seventeen patients who fulfilled the Scoliosis Research Society brace referral criteria were recruited. Radiog

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has been suggested as improving respiratory mechanics in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We hypothesized that LVRS might lengthen the diaphragm, increase its area of apposition with the chest wall, and thereby improve its mechanical function. To determine the effect of bilateral LVRS on diaphragm length, we measured diaphragm length at TLC, using plain chest roentgenograms (CXRs), in 25 patients (11 males and 14 females) before LVRS and 3 to 6 mo after LVRS. A subgroup of seven patients (reference data) also had diaphragm

BACKGROUND: The statistical profile reflects a global estimate of 5.1 million deaths in 2000, which was due to injuries that accounted for 10% of deaths due to all causes. Out of this, a quarter of injury-related deaths occurred in the South-East Asian region. Road Traffic Accident (RTA) is one among the top 5 causes of morbidity and mortality in South-East Asian countries. Most common cause of blunt abdominal trauma in India is road traffic accident followed by pedestrian accidents, abdominal blows, and fall from heights.
AIMS: To analyze the epidemiology and pattern of fatal thoraco-abdomin

UNLABELLED: We report the modified surgical reconstruction technique for correction for a large isolated congenital sternal cleft in 6 years old girl using a methyl methacrylate marlex mesh sandwich plate (MMS). The patient was referred to our tertiary care institution with a sizeable anterior chest wall bony defect. There was a large bulging under the skin due to protrusion of mediastinal viscera and visible cardiac pulsations with breathing. A chest x-ray and computed tomographic scan (CT) of the thorax was done to evaluate the bony defect. We reconstructed the sternal bony defect by our inn

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND CONTENT: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of 3-dimensional pediatric spinal deformity, characterized by abnormal lateral displacement and rotation. Full-time rigid bracing is often prescribed to prevent curve progression during skeletal growth. Directed force is applied to the apex via the rib cage to achieve satisfactory in-brace correction. The short- and long-term effects of bracing on the pulmonary function remain unclear.
PURPOSE: To study the effects of bracing on the pulmonary function of AIS patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review

BACKGROUND: In polytrauma (PT) patients, osseous thoracic injuries are commonly observed. One of the most severe injuries is the flail chest where the rib cage is broken in such a way that leads to a partial functional detachment of the thoracic wall. Especially in PT patients, the integrity of the respiratory system and especially, of the respiratory muscles is essential to prevent respiratory failure. Besides conservative treatment options, flail chest injuries may be surgically stabilized. However, this treatment option is rarely carried out and evidence on the outcome of surgically treated

The correction of severe post-tubercular kyphosis (PTK) is complex and has the disadvantage of being multiple staged with a high morbidity. Here, we describe the procedure and results of closing-opening osteotomy for correction of PTK which shortens the posterior column and opens the anterior column appropriately to correct the deformity without altering the length of the spinal cord. Seventeen patients with PTK (10 males; 7 females) with an average age of 18.3 +/- 10.6 years (range 4-40 years) formed the study group. There were ten thoracolumbar, one lumbar and six thoracic deformities. The n

INTRODUCTION: Forensic expertise has not specified with certainty any specific injury among fatally injured frontal car-occupants in frontal car collisions.
OBJECTIVE: To establish if blunt injuries of thoracic aorta, heart, and pericardium could be used as predictors where the fatally injured car-occupant was at the moment of car-collision.
METHODS: A retrospective autopsy study was performed. The subjects were fatally injured car-drivers, front-seat and rear-seat passengers in head-on car collisions. In each of them we analyzed the injuries of thoracic aorta, heart and pericardium.
