Ruminants are fed forage which is often contaminated with Listeria, and frequently shed Listeria monocytogenes with their faeces. The present study was designed to localize the sites of infection in the digestive tract concomitant with Listeria faecal excretion in a sheep model. Ten Listeria-free sheep were inoculated per os with a dose of 10(10) c.f.u. of a pathogenic L. monocytogenes strain. Listeria received by two of the ten animals were radiolabelled with (111)indium oxine. The dissemination of the Listeria was assessed by in vivo imaging, by culture of bacteria in the faeces, organs and

BACKGROUND: The gayal (Bos frontalis), a semi-domesticated bovine species, demonstrates exceptional adaptability to lignocellulose-rich diets dominated by bamboo, suggesting the presence of a specialized gastrointestinal microbiome. However, the functional mechanisms underlying this host-microbiome interaction remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted integrated metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses of rumen, cecum, and colon digesta from yellow cattle and gayal raised on the same bamboo-based high-fiber diet.
RESULTS: The results showed that gayal exhibited superior fiber-degrading

Eurytrema coelomaticum is a digenean flatworm of ruminants that is the causative agent of eurytrematosis, a disease of veterinary health concern. Although modern techniques of morphological analysis have provided new insights about the morphology and anatomy of parasitic helminths, most studies on E. coelomaticum adults are based on conventional light microscopy. In the present study, a combined approach using brightfield, fluorescence, confocal and scanning electron microscopies (SEMs), together with the cryofracture technique, have updated morphological data on E. coelomaticum recovered from

The beef cattle rumen is a heterogenous microbial ecosystem that is necessary for the host to digest food and support growth. The importance of the rumen microbiota (RM) is also widely recognized for its critical roles in metabolism and immunity. The level of health is indicated by a dynamic RM distribution. We performed high-throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene to compare microbial populations between rumens in beef cattle with or without doxycycline treatment to assess dynamic microbiotic shifts following antibiotic administration. The results of the operational taxonomic uni

The gullet worms, classical Gongylonema pulchrum and newly differentiated Gongylonema nepalensis, are prevalent in various mammals in Japan and Sardinia, Italy, respectively. The former species is cosmopolitan in distribution, dwelling in the mucosa of the upper digestive tract of a variety of domestic and wild mammals, and also humans. At present, the geographical distribution of G. nepalensis is known in Nepal and Sardinia, with the nematode having been recorded from the oesophagus of water buffaloes (Nepal), cattle, sheep, goats and wild mouflon (Sardinia). To clarify their natural transmis

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors of several species of pathogenic trypanosomes in tropical Africa. Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a zoonosis caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in East Africa and T. b. gambiense in West and Central Africa. About 100000 new cases are reported per year, with many more probably remaining undetected. Sixty million people living in 36 countries are at risk of infection. Recently, T. b. gambiense trypanosomiasis has emerged as a major public health problem in Central Africa, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and south

Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) also named volatile fatty acids, mainly acetate, propionate and butyrate, are the major end-products of the microbial digestion of carbohydrates in the alimentary canal. The highest concentrations are observed in the forestomach of the ruminants and in the large intestine (caecum and colon) of all the mammals. Butyrate and caproate released by action of gastric lipase on bovine milk triacylglycerols ingested by preruminants or infants are of nutritional importance too. Both squamous stratified mucosa of rumen and columnar simple epithelium of intestine absorb rea

The ability of mineral salts to alter rumen fermentation, rumen fluid dilution rate, milk fat synthesis, and nutrient utilization was investigated in dairy cows fed a high-concentrate, milk-fat depressing diet. Four rumen-fistulated Holstein cows were in a 4 X 4 Latin square design. Treatments consisted of: 1) basal (25% corn silage: 75% concentrate on a dry matter basis), 2) basal + 2.0% sodium chloride, 3) basal + 2.0% sodium bicarbonate, and 4) basal + 2.4% limestone. Addition of limestone to the basal diet reduced dry matter intake but increased efficiency of dietary nutrient utilization f

We hypothesized cattle that differed in BW gain had different digestive tract microbiota. Two experiments were conducted. In both experiments, steers received a diet that consisted of 8.0% chopped alfalfa hay, 20% wet distillers grain with solubles, 67.75% dry-rolled corn, and 4.25% vitamin/mineral mix (including monensin) on a dry matter basis. Steers had ad libitum access to feed and water. In experiment 1, 144 steers (age = 310 ± 1.5 d; BW = 503 ± 37.2 kg) were individually fed for 105 d. Ruminal digesta samples were collected from eight steers with the greatest (1.96 ± 0.02 kg/d) and eight

UNLABELLED: Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) can be efficiently transmitted to small ruminants (sheep and goats) with certain prion protein (PrP) genotypes. Polymorphisms in PrP of both the host and donor influence the transmission efficiency of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in general. These polymorphisms in PrP also modulate the PrP conversion underlying TSE agent replication. Here we demonstrate that single-round protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA) can be used to assess species and polymorphism barriers at the molecular level. We assessed those within and

BACKGROUND: The regulatory effects of glucose absorption at different sites (rumen vs. small intestine) on lipid metabolism exhibit significant variation in beef nutrition. This study aimed to investigate the regulatory pathways of rumen-protected or unprotected glucose on lipid metabolism through the rumen-jejunum axis in Xinjiang Brown cattle.
RESULTS: Thirty Xinjiang Brown cattle (females) with similar initial weight (410 ± 22.4 kg) were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups (n = 10 animals per group). The experimental groups were fed a basal diet with the following daily supplements per

Livestock feeds can be contaminated by several fungi. Among these, Fusarium spp. are widespread and produce mycotoxins, such as deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), and fumonisins B1 and B2 (FB1 and FB2). We investigated whether feeding a TMR contaminated with moderate to high concentrations of ZEN, DON, FB1, and FB2 to dairy cows in early lactation alters (1) their feeding behavior and rumination time; (2) milk yield, composition, and quality; (3) plasma metabolic profile and biochemical traits; and (4) postpartum uterine involution and resumption of cyclicity. We tested whether adding a

BACKGROUND: Iran ranks among the world's leading producers of small ruminants, with over 53 million sheep and 25 million goats. Despite this prominence, congenital defects in these animals remain under-documented, presenting a major gap in veterinary epidemiology and herd health management. This study represents the first nationwide effort to systematically classify and analyze congenital anomalies in Iranian sheep and goats.
METHODS: Over 10 years (2014-2024), cases of congenital anomalies were recorded across all 31 provinces of Iran. Data were collected through farm-level clinical evaluati

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a major metabolic disease in lactating dairy cows caused by the excessive intake of high-concentrate diets. Here, we investigated the synergistic responses of rumen bacteria and epithelium to high-grain (HG)-induced SARA. Eight ruminally cannulated lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned to 2 groups for a 3-week experiment and fed either a conventional (CON) diet or an HG diet. The results showed that the HG-feeding cows had a thickened rumen epithelial papilla with edge injury and a decreased plasma β-hydroxybutyrate concentration. The 16S rRNA gene

Previous research studies confirmed that both resveratrol (RES) and β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyric acid (HMB) improved growth performance by altering intestinal microbiota. However, the mechanism underlying of RES and HMB on intestinal function remains unclear in ruminant. In this study, supplements of RES and HMB alone or in combination were evaluated as promoters of antioxidant capacity, immune response and barrier function, and modulators of the microbiota and metabolite profiles in the jejunum of Tibetan sheep. A total of 120 two-month-old Tibetan rams were randomly divided into four treatment

California is the leading state for the production of almonds, with more than 400,000 bearing hectares of orchards that produced approximately 1 billion kilograms of shelled nuts in 2017. Almond hulls (AH) are a regional by-product feedstuff fed predominantly to dairy cattle in California. A 2012 study surveyed 40 dairy farms in California and found that 39 out of 104 total mixed rations contained AH, with a mean daily feeding rate of 1.45 kg/cow. In 2017, approximately 2 billion kilograms of AH was produced. At a feeding rate of 1.45 kg/cow daily, even if all 1.7 million lactating cows in Cal
