A critical analysis of research methods and experimental models to study pulpitis.

Pulpitis is the inflammatory response of the dental pulp to a tooth insult, whether it is microbial, chemical, or physical in origin. It is traditionally referred to as reversible or irreversible, a classification for therapeutic purposes that determines the capability of the pulp to heal. Recently, new knowledge about dental pulp physiopathology led to orientate therapeutics towards more frequent preservation of pulp vitality. However, full adoption of these vital pulp therapies by dental practitioners will be achieved only following better understanding of cell and tissue mechanisms involved

Evaluation of new treatment for incipient enamel demineralization using 45S5 bioglass.

Bioglass 45S5 is a silica-based bioactive glass capable of depositing a layer of hydroxyl carbonate apatite on the surface of the glass when immersed in body fluids. The present paper studies a new technique for treating early human dental enamel caries lesions by using a paste composed of 45S5 bioglass and phosphoric acid. Artificial caries lesions were induced in enamel flat surfaces by means of a decalcification solution. All specimens were exposed to a brushing-abrasion challenge to test the durability of any newly formed layer resulting from the application of 45S5 bioglass paste. The spe

A comparative study of root coverage obtained with guided tissue regeneration utilizing a bioabsorbable membrane versus the connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft.

Obtaining predictable root coverage has become an important part of periodontal therapy. The purpose of this study was to compare two techniques of obtaining root coverage. The two techniques were the connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft and guided tissue regeneration with a bioabsorbable polylactic acid softened with citric acid ester membrane. The connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft had a mean root coverage of 97.1%, and the guided tissue regeneration procedure produced a mean root coverage of 75.1%. This difference was not statistically sig

Comparative study of a bioresorbable and a non-resorbable membrane in the treatment of human buccal gingival recessions.

Twelve patients with bilateral comparable gingival recessions were treated using a split mouth design, to compare the relative success of root coverage by two regenerative procedures. The areas of recession treated were Class I or II according to Miller's classification and caused either an esthetic problem and/or root sensitivity. The symmetrical defects, on the maxillary canines, 4 mm or deeper, were randomly assigned in each patient to surgical procedures with either a bioresorbable matrix barrier (test) or a non-resorbable expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (control). A new method of attaching cast gold occlusal surfaces to acrylic resin denture teeth.

Historically, cast gold occlusal surfaces for complete or removable partial dentures have been fabricated with retentive loops or beads and luted to prepared denture teeth with acrylic resin or attached to tooth-colored, heat-processed acrylic resin. At present, alternatives to mechanical retention for attaching resin to metal include chemical bonding of the resin after placement of intermediate ceramic or tin layers and the use of chemically adhesive resin cements. Compared to mechanical retention, the chemical bonding of resin to metal requires less gold and allows more room for properly con

Evaluation of guided tissue regeneration in Class II furcation defects. A clinical re-entry study.

Twelve patients with two comparable furcation Class II lesions in lower molars were included in this study. After adequate presurgical preparation and pertinent clinical measurements, the areas were treated with full thickness flaps and thorough debridement and scaling and planing of the root surfaces. One of the defects was randomly selected to be covered with Gore-Tex periodontal material, held in place by sling sutures of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. On both sites the flaps were positioned slightly coronal to their original level and sutured. After 6 months both sites were re-entered s

Surgical management of the buccal bifurcation cyst: bone grafting as a treatment adjunct to enucleation and curettage.

The buccal bifurcation cyst (BBC) is a rare inflammatory odontogenic cyst of unknown etiology. It typically develops on the buccal aspect of the permanent mandibular first molar and occasionally on the permanent mandibular second molar in children 4 to 14 years old. Distinct clinical findings of the BBC include involvement of a vital partially or fully erupted mandibular first or second molar, swelling in the affected mandibular molar region, delayed or altered eruption pattern of the involved tooth, and an increase in periodontal pocket depth when the affected tooth is partially erupted. Localized vertical maxillary ridge augmentation using symphyseal bone cores: a technique and case report.

Vertical augmentation of the alveolar ridge is intended to restore resorbed alveolar ridges. This procedure is important for the placement of dental implants in a favorable position and also to enhance restoration esthetics. This article presents an approach for vertical ridge augmentation in the anterior maxilla utilizing symphyseal bone cores. A patient presented with 2 localized bony defects around the maxillary lateral incisors. Following extraction of these teeth, vertical bone defects of 7 mm on the right and 6 mm on the left were observed in relation to the cementoenamel junction of the

Histologic assessment of new attachment following the treatment of a human buccal recession by means of a guided tissue regeneration procedure.

A deep, long-standing recession on a mandibular incisor was treated in a 56-year-old female patient. The tooth was tilted buccally and was scheduled for extraction. The recession was 8 mm deep, with a pocket depth of 1 mm and no keratinized tissue. The recession was treated by guided tissue regeneration; the membrane was left in place for 4 weeks. The tooth was extracted along with marginal tissues 5 months after the removal of the membrane. At the time of extraction, 4 mm of root coverage had been achieved and 3 mm of keratinized tissue were measured buccally. Histologic measurements showed t
