A novel digital health approach to improving global pediatric sepsis care in Bangladesh using wearable technology and machine learning.

Sepsis is the leading cause of child death globally with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bearing a disproportionate burden of pediatric sepsis deaths. Limited diagnostic and critical care capacity and health worker shortages contribute to delayed recognition of advanced sepsis (severe sepsis, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction) in LMICs. The aims of this study were to 1) assess the feasibility of a wearable device for physiologic monitoring of septic children in a LMIC setting and 2) develop machine learning models that utilize readily available wearable and clinical data

Bionic Structural Design of Multifunctional Flexible Polypyrrole Sensors for Human Health Monitoring.

Rehabilitation medicine is an essential component of universal health coverage, while emerging electronic skin offers new opportunities for portable and personalized healthcare. However, flexible pressure sensors still face trade-offs among sensitivity, detection range, and stability, and gas sensors remain challenged by low-concentration detection and environmental robustness. Herein, a biomimetic "Thalia dealbata" microstructured hydrophobic polypyrrole/polydimethylsiloxane (S@PPy/PDMS) composite sensor was fabricated through a one-step template method and controllable in situ polymerization

Wireless, Deep-Seeing Smart Pill: A NIR-II Fluorescence Imaging Capsule Endoscope for Gastrointestinal Cancer.

Gastrointestinal cancer detection technologies are evolving; capsule endoscopy (CE) overcomes the invasiveness of tethered endoscopes. However, current CEs exhibit limited penetration depth and low SNR due to strong photon scattering, absorption, and autofluorescence in biological tissues, potentially resulting in missed deep or small lesions. This study reports a near-infrared-II fluorescent imaging capsule endoscope (NIR-II FICE), a "smart pill" designed for early gastrointestinal cancer diagnosis. NIR-II FICE can detect NIR-II-specific fluorescence signals above 900 nm from lesional tissues

Enhanced Terahertz Photoresponse via Acoustic Plasmon Cavity Resonances in Scalable Graphene.

Precise control and nanoscale confinement of terahertz (THz) fields are essential requirements for emerging applications in photonics, quantum technologies, wireless communications, and sensing. Here, we demonstrate a polaritonic cavity-enhanced THz photoresponse in an antenna-coupled device based on chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) monolayer graphene. The dipole antenna lobes simultaneously serve as two gate electrodes, concentrate the impinging THz field, and efficiently launch acoustic graphene plasmons (AGPs), which drive a strong photothermoelectric (PTE) signal. Between 6 and 90 K, the pho

Smart wearable biosensors: a transformative synergy between diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Smart wearable biosensors represent a significant paradigm shift from one-time sample analysis to real-time biochemical monitoring at the body interface. Besides the flexible design of the device or wireless readout, their clinical utility will also require the reliability of the entire sensing pathway under real physiological conditions. This pathway involves biofluid access to clinical interpretation. Despite rapid progress, many wearable biosensor platforms remain limited by weak biofluid-blood correlation, receptor degradation, biofouling, motion artefacts, sensor drift and insufficient pa

Neural Bases of Collective Social Behavior and Group Interactions across Species.

Collective group behavior is a key form of social interaction observed across animal species, including humans. These collective behaviors, such as flocking and herding, emerge from individual actions within complex group dynamics and can often lead to group phenomena such as social norms and trends. By investigating different species-insects, fish, birds, and mammals-ongoing efforts have revealed both shared and species-specific neural processes involved in collective social dynamics. Newly evolving technologies, such as motion tracking and behavioral sequencing, have enabled the detailed mea

User-centered development of a personalized adaptive mirror therapy for upper-limb post-stroke rehabilitation using virtual reality and myoelectric control.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral stroke often results in significant motor deficits, including contralateral hemiparesis of the upper limb. Rehabilitation protocols with high-intensity and task-specific exercises can improve these deficits. Recent technological advancements in virtual reality (VR), myoelectric control, and exergames may be exploited to enhance rehabilitation effectiveness. However, novel rehabilitation approaches combining these novel methodologies have rarely been developed with the active involvement of both therapists and patients. METHODS: An interdisciplinary team developed a nove

Postoperative Delirium and the Association to Continuously Monitored Severe Deviations of Vital Signs at the General Ward After Major Abdominal Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is the most frequent neurological complication after surgery and is associated with increased postoperative morbidity and mortality. The underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood, but is suggested to be multifactorial, including hypoperfusion and hypoxia; however, the role of deviating vital signs prior to postoperative delirium (POD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between severe physiological deviations detected by continuous wireless monitoring and the occurrence of POD within the first three postoperative days after major abdominal

Using smart speakers to contactlessly monitor heart rhythms.

Heart rhythm assessment is indispensable in diagnosis and management of many cardiac conditions and to study heart rate variability in healthy individuals. We present a proof-of-concept system for acquiring individual heart beats using smart speakers in a fully contact-free manner. Our algorithms transform the smart speaker into a short-range active sonar system and measure heart rate and inter-beat intervals (R-R intervals) for both regular and irregular rhythms. The smart speaker emits inaudible 18-22 kHz sound and receives echoes reflected from the human body that encode sub-mm displacement

Gastrointestinal symptoms and cardiac vagal tone in type 1 diabetes correlates with gut transit times and motility index.

BACKGROUND: Although gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in diabetes, they frequently do not correlate with measurable sensorimotor abnormalities. The wireless motility capsule (WMC) measures pressure, temperature, and pH as it traverses the GI tract wherefrom transit times and motility indices are derived. The aim was to investigate whether GI symptoms correlate with changes in (a) segmental transit times, (b) segmental motility index, (c) cardiac vagal tone, or (d) presence/absence of peripheral neuropathy in type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Gastrointestinal symptoms in 104 participants with

Concurrent Validity of a Novel Wireless Inertial Measurement System for Assessing Trunk Impairment in People with Stroke.

Background: The Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) is recommended for clinical research use to assess trunk impairment post-stroke. However, it is observer-dependent and neglects the quality of trunk movements. This study proposes an instrumented TIS (iTIS) using the Valedo system, comprising portable inertial sensors, as an objective measure of trunk impairment post-stroke. Objective: This study investigates the concurrent and discriminant ability of the iTIS in chronic stroke participants. Method: Forty participants (20 with chronic stroke, 20 healthy, age-matched) were assessed using the TIS and

Pathological activity in mediodorsal thalamus of rats with spinal cord injury pain.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results not only in motor deficits, but produces, in many patients, excruciating chronic pain (SCI pain). We have previously shown, in a rodent model, that SCI causes suppression of activity in the GABAergic nucleus, the zona incerta (ZI), and concomitant increased activity in one of its main targets, the posterior nucleus of the thalamus (PO); the increased PO activity is correlated with the maintenance and expression of hyperalgesia after SCI. Here, we test the hypothesis that SCI causes a similar pathological increase in other thalamic nuclei regulated by the ZI, sp

Putative role of NF-κB-mediated inflammation in acute cardiac injury induced by S-band microwave radiation in rats.

With the widespread adoption of wireless communication technology, the issue of environmental exposure to microwave radiation has become increasingly prominent. In the field of cardiovascular research, it has been observed that microwave radiation may have potential effects on target organs such as the heart. However, the dynamic evolution characteristics of this radiation over time and its relationship with inflammation still require further exploration. This study aimed to establish a rat model of uniform whole-body exposure to S-band microwaves. A range of methods were used, including detec
