The relationship between trajectories of family/cultural stressors and depression and suicidal ideation among substance using Mexican-American adults.

We used an intersectional minority stress perspective to examine the association between family/cultural stress and mental health among substance-using Mexican-Americans. Employing a unique longitudinal sample of 239 socioeconomically disadvantaged, non-injecting heroin-using Mexican-Americans from San Antonio, Texas, we examined how culturally relevant stressors are related to depression and suicidal ideation. First, we identified depression and suicidal ideation prevalence rates for this disadvantaged sample. Second, we determined how cultural stress is experienced over time using stress tra

Mexican Americans and historical trauma theory: a theoretical perspective.

The observed intergenerational stress response to negative social and historical events is at the core of historical trauma theory, which has been applied to Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders, among others. The historical and social experiences of the Mexican population living in the United States have many parallels that lend themselves to the application of historical trauma theory to macro-level and micro-level influences on access to health care, physical health status, and mental health status, including substance abuse among Mexican Americans. "For the dream of being here, one sacrifices...": voices of immigrant mothers in a home visiting program.

Fourteen Latina immigrants participating in an innovative home visiting program for mothers of infants and young children at risk of child maltreatment were interviewed about their experiences coming to the United States, conditions they were living in after arriving, and perceptions of the intervention. Findings from the qualitative analyses detail rich, descriptive information regarding the struggles and adaptations of the immigrant mothers and families. Poverty in home countries propelled these women to move to the United States, leaving close family and sometimes children behind. Harrowing

Children's experience of loss by parental migration in inner-city Jamaica.

Migratory separation, when parents migrate and leave their children behind, was investigated in a case-control sample of 9- to 10-year-olds living in inner-city communities in Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica (N = 54). Data analyses using descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations showed that children's reactions to their parents' migration were directly related to poor school performance and psychological difficulties. Additionally, being currently exposed to violence in the home and/or community was significantly associated with high scores on a measure of grief intensity. "Protective"

Culture and domestic violence: the ecology of abused Latinas.

This study examined the predictors of domestic violence within a sample of 60 immigrant Latinas, of whom 30 had sought assistance for abuse and 30 had sought other family services. Hypotheses were derived from several frameworks relevant to understanding abuse--intrapsychic (learned helplessness), interpersonal (family violence), and feminist theory. Findings related to the specific formulations were subsequently combined into a model of abuse in which the mutuality of communication within the couple mediates the effects of husband's intoxication and environmental stressors on the occurrence/s

Ethnicity, social factors, illness and suicide: a follow-up study of a random sample of the Swedish population.

The aim of this longitudinal study was to determine the influence of ethnicity, social factors and self-reported long-term somatic and psychiatric illness on suicide in a random sample of the Swedish population. The study is based on face-to-face interviews conducted between 1979 and 1985 with a random sample of the Swedish population consisting of 47,762 Swedish-born subjects and 4407 individuals born elsewhere. The sample has been followed via register data concerning cases of suicide (suicides and undetermined deaths) until 31 December 1993. In total, 102 males and 46 females committed suic

The Relationship Between Social Support, HIV Serostatus, and Perceived Likelihood of Being HIV Positive Among Self-Settled Female, Foreign Migrants in Cape Town, South Africa.

Female cross-border migrants experience elevated risks for HIV, and migrants in South Africa may face additional risks due to the country's underlying HIV prevalence. These risks may be mitigated by the receipt of social support. A behavioral risk-factor survey was administered using respondent-driven sampling. Multivariable regression models assessed the relationships between social support and two HIV outcomes: HIV serostatus and perceived HIV status. Low social support was not significantly associated with HIV status (aOR = 1.03, 95 % CI 0.43-2.46), but was significantly related to a percep

Region of birth, sex, and agricultural work of immigrant Latino farm workers: the MICASA study.

Agricultural work is hazardous, and immigrant workers perform the majority of production tasks, yet there are few data describing agricultural work and use of protective measures by demographic characteristics. We examined cross-sectionally the influence of region of birth (Mexico vs. Central America) and sex on agricultural work and use of protective measures in the MICASA cohort of immigrant Latino farm workers in Mendota, California. Of 445 participants, 293 (65.8%) were born in Mexico (163 men, 130 women) and 152 (34.2%) were born in Central America (80 men, 72 women). Men worked on averag

Methods and rationale to assess the efficacy of a parenting intervention targeting diet improvement and substance use prevention among Latinx adolescents.

Latinx adolescents are at higher risk for chronic diseases relative to adolescents of other ethnic groups, in part because of their lack of adherence to diet recommendations and their higher rates of substance use. Given the proximal influence of family factors during the developmental stage of adolescence, parenting interventions may be an effective way to promote healthy nutrition and substance use prevention simultaneously. This article describes the design and theoretical rationale of a study assessing the effects of Families Preparing the New Generation Plus (FPNG Plus), a 10-week cultura

Immigration measures and reproductive health among Hispanic youth: findings from the national longitudinal survey of youth, 1997-2003.

PURPOSE: To explore relationships between immigration measures and risk of reproductive and sexual events among U.S. Hispanic adolescents. METHODS: We examined generation status, language in the home and country of origin in relation to sexual activity, contraception, and childbearing among 1614 Hispanic adolescents, using nationally representative 1997-2003 longitudinal data. Multivariable analyses controlled for potentially confounding variables. Tests for effect modification by gender and Mexican origin were conducted. RESULTS: Fewer first generation adolescents transitioned to sexual int

It's all about "connecting": reasons for drug use among Latino gay men living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Research on Latino gay men drug use is limited. This study explores the narratives of 16 Latino drug-using gay men living in the San Francisco Bay Area by exploring the role social settings play in their drug use, as well as by identifying the reasons and motivations for drug-use. Using a thematic content analysis, 16 interviews with LGM living in the San Francisco Bay Area were analyzed. Results suggest LGMhave different reasons for drug use across multiple settings. Participants use drugs to cope with their sexual identity, to feel like part of the mainstream gay community, and to reduce sex

A model of perceived risk for colorectal cancer among Japanese Americans.

BACKGROUND: Despite the higher rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) among Japanese Americans, little is known about their risk perceptions. The objective of this study was to test an exploratory model explaining psychosocial pathways to perceived risk of CRC. METHODS: The postulated model was tested using path analysis with data from a random sample of 306 Japanese Americans aged 30 and older. RESULTS: The model fit the data very well: chi(2)(10) = 10.22, P = .42; goodness-of-fit index = .993; comparative fit index = .999; and root mean square are of approximation = .008. Alcohol consumption among low-income pregnant Latinas.

BACKGROUND: Due to changing cultural norms, Latinas of childbearing age residing in the U.S. may be at increasing risk of drinking harmful levels of alcohol during pregnancy, and may also be unaware of the risks for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders associated with this behavior. We assessed the prevalence of alcohol consumption in a sample of low-income pregnant Latinas and examined risk factors for alcohol use in the periconceptional period. METHODS: As part of a larger intervention trial, a cross-sectional in-home interview study was conducted among a sample of 100 pregnant low-income Latin

Unaccompanied refugee children and adolescents: the glaring contrast between a legal and a psychological perspective.

Unaccompanied refugee children and adolescents are a vulnerable group: they live not only in a relatively difficult situation as minor refugees staying in another country, but also face other risks due to the absence of their parents, such as traumatic experiences, exploitation or abuse. The difficult living situation of these unaccompanied refugee children and adolescents might therefore threaten their emotional well-being, resulting in important emotional and behavioural problems. This 'psychological' perspective shows the necessity of a strongly elaborated reception and care system for thes

Risk for psychiatric disorder among immigrants and their US-born descendants: evidence from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication.

Although previous research has consistently documented that immigrants to the United States have better mental health than US natives, little is known about why this difference occurs. DSM-IV anxiety, mood, impulse control, and substance use disorders were assessed in a nationally representative survey of the US household population, the National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Differences in risk for disorder between immigrants (N = 299) and 5124 natives (N = 5124) were examined using discrete time survival models. Differences were estimated by generation, age of immigration, and duration of

Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents.

Utilizing the concept of race-based traumatic stress, this study tested whether posttraumatic stress symptoms explain the process by which perceived discrimination is related to health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents. One hundred ten participants were recruited from a large health maintenance organization in Northern California. Mediational analyses indicated that adolescents who perceived more discrimination reported worse posttraumatic stress symptoms, controlling for covariates. In turn, adolescents who experienced heightened posttraumatic stress symptoms reported more alc

DSM-III psychiatric disorders among Hmong refugees in the United States: a point prevalence study.

The author reports on a survey of 97 Hmong adult refugees in the United States. Thirty of these refugees showed symptoms of chronic maladjustment, and 13 showed another DSM-III axis I disorder; two manifested a paranoid psychosis, and six had a major depression. There were few axis II diagnoses. Medical conditions were frequent and often psychophysiological in nature, but they were not associated with axis I disorders. Axis IV psychosocial stressors were not associated with axis I diagnoses, but subjects with an axis I disorder tended to show lower adaptive levels on axis V. The demographic co

Psychometric analysis of the Oral Health Behavior Social Support Short Form scales (OHBSS-SF) among Mexican-American adults.

BACKGROUND: Social support is an important psychosocial resource that can facilitate engaging in healthy behaviors, including oral health behaviors. Nine scales assessing Oral Health Behavior Social Support (OHBSS) for brushing, flossing and seeking dental care were developed and validated in the English and Spanish languages. The full-length scales included 37 required items to assess social support from three sources: family, health providers, and others/friends. The OHBSS-SF scales cover three oral health behaviors, use six items each to assess social support for brushing, flossing and dent
