A review of eosinophil chemotaxis and function in Taenia taeniaeformis infections in the laboratory rat.

The eosinophil has long been associated with diseases of acute hypersensitivity and with parasite infections, but its exact role in the pathogenesis of these conditions remains uncertain. Characterization of factors associated with migration of eosinophils into tissues has helped to elucidate eosinophil function. Eosinophil chemotactic factors associated with acute hypersensitivity reactions include the eosinophil chemotactic factors of anaphylaxis, histamine, and arachidonic acid metabolites, all of which are released from mast cells, and the lymphokine eosinophil stimulation promoter (ESP).

Marine Nematodes in Seafood: A Review of Food Safety Concerns, Advanced Detection Techniques, and Mitigation Strategies.

Marine nematodes are important food-borne parasites infecting many species of marine fish and cephalopods. This review provides a comprehensive discussion of the food safety concerns associated with marine nematodes in seafood, along with emerging methods for their detection. The potential prevention strategies for these seafood-borne parasites were also explored. According to the results, anisakiasis is the most serious nematode disease humans acquire from marine fish, chiefly due to Anisakis simplex larvae and, to a lesser degree, Pseudoterranova decipiens. Several analytical methods are emp

How globalization and climate change could affect foodborne parasites.

Foodborne parasites, most of which are zoonotic, represent an important human health hazard. These pathogens which include both protozoa (e.g., Cryptosporidium spp., Cyclospora cayetanensis, Toxoplasma gondii) and helminths (e.g., liver and intestinal flukes, Fasciola spp., Paragonimus spp., Echinococcus spp., Taenia spp., Angiostrongylus spp., Anisakis spp., Ascaris spp., Capillaria spp., Toxocara spp., Trichinella spp., Trichostrongylus spp.), have accompanied the human species since its origin and their spread has often increased due to their behavior. Since both domesticated and wild anima

Ascaris suum enolase is a potential vaccine candidate against ascariasis.

Ascariasis caused by Ascaris is the most common parasite problem in humans and pigs worldwide. No vaccines are available for the prevention of Ascaris infections. In the present study, the gene encoding Ascaris suum enolase (As-enol-1) was amplified, cloned and sequenced. Amino acid sequence alignment indicated that As-enol-1 was highly conserved between different nematodes and shared the highest identity (87%) with enolase from Anisakis simplex s.l. The recombinant pVAX-Enol was successfully expressed in Marc-145 cells. The ability of the pVAX-Enol for inducing immune protective responses aga

Genetic and morphological characterization of Mawsonascaris vulvolacinata n. sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) and associated histopathology in a wild caught cowtail stingray, Pastinachus ater.

There are limited reports of infectious agents affecting Australian cowtail stingrays. In the present study, a new species of ascaridoid nematode belonging to the genus Mawsonascaris is described. The most distinct characteristic features were observed in females (the presence of a polar spine in the eggs and a flap-like projection in the vulval area). An identification key for Mawsonascaris spp. is provided. Additionally, internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequences were obtained for the new species. Alignment of the ITS sequence of the specimens in the present study with those deposited in G

Comparison of the performance of Skin Prick and ISAC Tests in the diagnosis of allergy.

The recent European Union and Italian regulations in the matter of in vivo test could strongly impact on current diagnostic approach, increasing the usage of in vitro tests in daily clinical practice. We evaluated 506 patients with both skin prick test and a microarray system (ImmunoCAP ISAC 112). The overall evaluation between ImmunoCAP® ISAC vs SPT showed a moderate agreement (k=0.509, 95% C.I. 0.480-0.540, SE: 0.016) considering both aeroallergens and food allergens. When we considered the concordant results (double-positive plus double-negatives), the agreement ranged from 69% to 80% for p

Viability Test Device for anisakid nematodes.

Up to now the visual inspection of mobility of isolated anisakid larvae serves as a measure of viability and possible risk of infection. This paper presents a new method to rule out unreliability - caused by the temporary immobility of the larvae and by the human uncertainty factor of visual observation. By means of a Near infrared (NIR) imaging method, elastic curvature energies and geometric shape parameters were determined from contours, and used as a measure of viability. It was based on the modelling of larvae as a cylindrical membrane system. The interaction between curvatures, contracti

An Overview of Fish-borne Nematodiases among Returned Travelers for Recent 25 Years- Unexpected Diseases Sometimes Far Away from the Origin.

Along with globalization of traveling and trading, fish-borne nematodiases seems to be increasing in number. However, apart from occasional and sporadic case reports or mini-reviews of particular diseases in particular countries, an overview of fish-borne nematodiasis among travelers have never been performed. In this review, we gathered fishborne nematodiasis among travelers for recent 25 years by an extensive global literature survey using appropriate keywords, e.g. travelers diseases, human infection, anisakiasis, gnathostomiasis, capillariasis, sushi, sashimi, ceviche, Gnathostoma, Pseudot

Chronic urticaria is associated with a differential helminth-arthropod-related atopy phenotype.

The relationship between atopic sensitization and chronic urticaria is still controversial. In this study, we aimed to compare the prevalence of aeroallergen sensitization in chronic urticaria patients with (CU/As+) and without (CU/As-) sensitization against Anisakis simplex. Forty-nine CU/As+ and 80 CU/As- patients were studied and skin prick tests (SPT) were performed against aeroallergens. We assessed sensitization in a subgroup of patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and/or bronchial asthma (RCBA) and compared the prevalence with a control group of 522 non-urticaria patients with RCB

Anisakiasis: The risks of seafood consumption.

CONTEXT AND AIMS: Japanese cuisine is now popular worldwide, and consumption of raw fish has thus increased at sushi bars and Japanese restaurants outside Japan. Anisakiasis, also known as herring-worm disease, is caused by ingesting larval nematodes in raw seafood and is a common illness in Japan. However, due to the rising popularity of Japanese food, gastroenterologists outside Japan need to be familiar with this disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS AND RESULTS: We treated 158 patients presenting with acute gastrointestinal manifestations caused by anisakiasis from April 1991 to April 2000. One o

Risk analysis of human anisakidosis through the consumption of the blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, sold at Spanish supermarkets.

European legislation directed at the catering industry concerning the prevention of anisakidosis proposes efficient measures to avoid human infestation, but this legislation does not directly address the consumer at the household level. Assessing the anisakidosis risk for consumers who buy fresh fish at supermarkets in Spain, 284 blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, specimens, originating from two fishing zones and seasons of capture, sold at five nationwide Spanish supermarket chains, were examined to identify the presence of anisakid species and analyze their prevalence and abundance in v

Usefulness of early serial measurement of specific and total immunoglobulin E in the diagnosis of gastro-allergic anisakiasis.

BACKGROUND: Sensitization to Anisakis simplex (A. simplex) has been documented to produce severe allergic reactions following ingestion of mainly raw or under-cooked parasitized fish. False positive skin prick tests (SPT) or specific IgE against this nematode and cross-reactivity restricts diagnosis. Gastric anisakiasis and gastro-allergic anisakiasis occur if fish is parasitized by live A. simplex OBJECTIVE: To investigate if serial serological analysis could be useful in the diagnosis of acute parasitation by this nematode. METHODS: We included 41 patients who experienced an allergic react

Heterogeneous Predisposing Factors and Etiology of Edema of the Uvula in a Spanish Population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Edema of the uvula (EU) may appear in isolation or in association with clinical manifestations such as urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylaxis. EU may lead to upper airway obstruction, provoking obstructive respiratory distress and asphyxia. Objective: We sought to investigate the etiology of and predisposing factors for EU in a large population of patients referred to an outpatient clinic. METHODS: In this 3-year follow-up cohort study, 171 patients presenting with EU were identified and classified as having isolated EU or nonisolated EU. The etiology of each patient

Evidence of infectious diseases in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) hunted in the waters of Greenland and by-caught in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The pathological, microbiological and serological findings in harbour porpoises hunted in Greenlandic waters were compared with the findings in animals accidentally caught in fishing gear in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea. The body condition of the Greenlandic animals was good, whereas nine of 23 German harbour porpoises were moderately to markedly emaciated. Both groups were infested with parasites. In the Greenlandic animals parasitism of the aural peribullar cavity with Stenurus minor, of the liver and pancreas with Orthosplanchnus mironovi, of the lungs with Halocercus species and of
