Voice disorders in the workplace: productivity in spasmodic dysphonia and the impact of botulinum toxin.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The impact of the disordered voice on standard work productivity measures and employment trends is difficult to quantify; this is in large part due to the heterogeneity of the disease processes. Spasmodic dysphonia (SD), a chronic voice disorder, may be a useful model to study this impact. Self-reported work measures (worked missed, work impairment, overall work productivity, and activity impairment) were studied among patients receiving botulinum toxin (BTX) treatments for SD. It was hypothesized that there would be a substantial difference in work-related measures betw

Pitch-Responsive Cortical Regions in Congenital Amusia.

Congenital amusia is a lifelong deficit in music perception thought to reflect an underlying impairment in the perception and memory of pitch. The neural basis of amusic impairments is actively debated. Some prior studies have suggested that amusia stems from impaired connectivity between auditory and frontal cortex. However, it remains possible that impairments in pitch coding within auditory cortex also contribute to the disorder, in part because prior studies have not measured responses from the cortical regions most implicated in pitch perception in normal individuals. We addressed this qu

Beyond colour perception: auditory-visual synaesthesia induces experiences of geometric objects in specific locations.

Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent visual experiences of coloured 'geometric objects' located at specific spatial location. Changes in auditory pitch alter the brightness, size, and spatial height of synaesthetic experiences in a systematic

A case of word deafness with preserved span: implications for the structure and function of short-term memory.

Case IJ shows impaired capacity to repeat individual words despite normal hearing as measured by audiometry and tympanometry. She also has difficulty in identifying other environmental sounds. Her phonological memory span for visually-presented material is normal, and her memory span for spoken digits is only slightly impaired. It is suggested that she has a pre-phonological auditory processing deficit; the implications of this for discussion of the role of phonological short-term memory in language processing are discussed.

A Study of Persian English Teachers' Voices: Do Acoustic Voice Characteristics Change When Speaking in English and Farsi?

OBJECTIVE: Voice characteristics can vary across languages due to distinct phonological and articulatory demands. However, limited research exists on how acoustic parameters differ when bilingual speakers switch between Farsi and English. This study aimed to compare the acoustic voice characteristics when Persian teachers of English languages switch between English and Farsi. METHODS: Thirty-eight English language teachers (30 females, 8 males, age range: 20-28 years) with Persian as their native language and a minimum of 3 years of English teaching experience participated in this study. Abnormal subjective experiences of schizophrenia: evaluation of the Eppendorf Schizophrenia Inventory.

The Eppendorf Schizophrenia Inventory (ESI) is a new clinical questionnaire aimed at self-experienced cognitive disturbances that are considered to be diagnostically specific for schizophrenia. Two ESI validation studies are presented in this report. The aim of study I was to search for objective correlates of the ESI in 100 schizophrenic inpatients. In study II, the diagnostic validity of the ESI was examined by group comparisons (inpatients with first episode or chronic schizophrenia, alcoholism, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, and healthy adults). Study I yielded numerous plau

Reliability of clinician-based (GRBAS and CAPE-V) and patient-based (V-RQOL and IPVI) documentation of voice disorders.

This study examined the reliability of two methods for documenting voice quality by clinicians and compared the methods for documenting patients' perceptions of voice quality. It involved a prospective reliability study and a retrospective chart review. Reliability of two clinician-based voice assessment protocols-Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, Strain (GRBAS) and Consensus Auditory Perceptual Evaluation-Voice (CAPE-V)-was evaluated. These two protocols were then compared after use in voice assessments of 42 males and 61 females performed by a certified speech-language pathologist spe

Altered intra- and inter-network functional connectivity in patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a functional vestibular disorder characterized by persistent dizziness, unsteadiness, and non-spinning vertigo. It is the most common cause of chronic vestibular syndrome, but its pathogenesis is currently unclear. Recent studies have indicated that sensory integration may be altered in PPPD patients. OBJECTIVE: Using independent component analysis (ICA) combined with seed-based functional connectivity analysis, we aimed to analyze changes in brain network functional connectivity (FC) in PPPD patients during the resting state and

Teaching Latino parents to support the multi-symbol message productions of their children who require AAC.

Many children who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) have difficulties shifting from the single- to multi-symbol stage of language development. Ensuring that children who use AAC receive evidence-based interventions to address this problem is critical. Furthermore, there has been little AAC treatment efficacy research to date that addresses the needs of multicultural populations, particularly those of Latino children who use AAC and their families. To address these issues, the current investigation used a mixed methodology, which included a focus group to determine if any

Sacculo-collic pathway dysfunction accompanying auditory neuropathy.

CONCLUSIONS: In a patient with bilateral auditory neuropathy (AN), the vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) was probably absent because of a neuropathy involving the inferior vestibular nerve and/or its end organ, the saccule. Our result can therefore be interpreted as a concomitant unilateral sacculo-collic neuropathy. We suggest the use of more precise terms to characterize AN patients with involvement of different parts of the inner ear and its innervations. We encourage detailed vestibular assessment in patients with AN in order to assess the co-existence of any symptomatic or asymp

From amusic to musical?--Improving pitch memory in congenital amusia with transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Brain imaging studies highlighted structural differences in congenital amusia, a life-long perceptual disorder that is associated with pitch perception and pitch memory deficits. A functional anomaly characterized by decreased low gamma oscillations (30-40 Hz range) in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during pitch memory has been revealed recently. Thus, the present study investigates whether applying transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at 35 Hz to the right DLPFC would improve pitch memory. Nine amusics took part in two tACS sessions (either 35 Hz or 90 Hz) and

Language-universal sensory deficits in developmental dyslexia: English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Studies in sensory neuroscience reveal the critical importance of accurate sensory perception for cognitive development. There is considerable debate concerning the possible sensory correlates of phonological processing, the primary cognitive risk factor for developmental dyslexia. Across languages, children with dyslexia have a specific difficulty with the neural representation of the phonological structure of speech. The identification of a robust sensory marker of phonological difficulties would enable early identification of risk for developmental dyslexia and early targeted intervention.
