A systematic review and meta-analysis of psychiatric diseases in individuals with primary hyperhidrosis.

Primary hyperhidrosis is associated with a substantial mental burden. In this study, the objective was to compare the occurrence of psychiatric diseases in individuals with and without primary hyperhidrosis by systematically reviewing the literature and conducting a meta-analysis. The PRISMA statement and the MOOSE checklist were employed. Cochrane Library, Embase and PubMed were searched. The risk of bias was determined by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A random effects model was employed in the meta-analysis. Fifteen studies met the eligibility criteria, encompassing 50 429 participants with hy

Audiological Profiling and Rehabilitation Outcomes in a Child With Johanson-Blizzard Syndrome.

Johanson Blizzard syndrome (JBS) is an autosomal recessive disorder that shows a multi-faceted impact on almost all body functions, including speech and hearing. This case presentation describes the comprehensive audiological and rehabilitative profile of an 8-year-old female child with JBS while correlating the test results to the physiological aspects of hearing. Case history revealed poor developmental motor skills, delayed speech and language development with hypothyroidism, and dysmorphic facial features including low bat ears, micrognathia, high arched palate, and hypoplasia of nasal ala

A paternally inherited 1.4 kb deletion of the 11p15.5 imprinting center 2 is associated with a mild familial Silver-Russell syndrome phenotype.

The Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare disorder characterized by heterogeneous clinical features, including growth retardation, typical facial dysmorphisms, and body asymmetry. Genetic alterations causative of SRS mostly affect imprinted genes located on chromosomes 7 or 11. Hypomethylation of the Imprinting Center 1 (IC1) of the chromosome 11p15.5 is the most common cause of SRS, while the Imprinting Center 2 (IC2) has been more rarely involved. Specifically, maternally inherited 11p15.5 deletions including the IC2 have been associated with the Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS), while pa

Body image and eating behavior in young adults born preterm.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested that people born preterm have increased rates of eating disorders (ED). However, a recent study suggested lower levels of ED-related symptoms in the extreme group of adults born preterm with very low birth weight (<1,500 g). We examined symptoms related to EDs in adults born early (<34 weeks of gestational age) or late (34 to <37 weeks of gestational age) preterm. METHODS: We studied young adults (mean age 24.1 years) from two birth cohorts: ESTER (Northern Finland 1985-1989) and AYLS (Uusimaa, Finland, 1985-1986). Of the participants, 185 were born

Disordered Eating Behavior, Body Image, and Energy Status of Female Student Dancers.

BACKGROUND: Modern culture has stereotyped the female body as one that is continually getting thinner. Internalization of the 'thin' ideal is partly attributable to the inner ideal to be successful combined with the external pressure imposed by media and others. Many individuals attempt to achieve these ideals by behavior modification that imposes health risks. PURPOSE: To investigate disordered eating (DE) behavior and energy status in female student dancers. METHODS: Volunteer dancers (n = 26) aged 19.0 (18.0; 21.0) years, matched by controls (n = 26) aged 20.0 (19.0; 21.0) years were recr

Knowing that Someone Had Facial Plastic Surgery Does Not Modify Perceptions of Attractiveness or Social Attributes.

BACKGROUND: Attractive individuals receive higher ratings on independent social attributes including intelligence, success, and likability. The authors sought to determine whether knowledge that a person in a photograph had facial plastic surgery affects perceptions of attractiveness or social attributes. METHODS: US adults were recruited to complete an online survey (Qualtrics respondent distribution system). Demographic information, a cosmetic surgery questionnaire, and a body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire were collected. Participants viewed photographs of young, White, male-

Advances in behavioral-cognitive therapy of social phobia.

Behavioral-cognitive therapy is a cost-effective treatment for social phobia. The doctor's role is to teach the patient how to do successful self-exposure. The clinician acts as a guide and monitor; there is no need to waste time accompanying the patient into the phobic situation. The patient first reads a self-exposure manual to learn how to confront panic-evoking social cues for prolonged period without avoidance until habituation sets in. This might require an hour daily of self-exposure over weeks or months. As patients habituate to social cues to which they have exposed themselves, they a

Somatoform Disorders Affect Decision-making of Breast Reconstruction Post-Mastectomy of Breast Cancer Patients: A Comparative Hazard Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Somatoform disorders (SDs), including somatic symptom disorder and body dysmorphic disorder, are increasingly recognized for their impact on surgical decision-making. Their influence on breast reconstruction (BR) timing and type following mastectomy remains underexplored. METHODS: Using the TriNetX National Health Research Network, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of 192,618 breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomy between 2005 and 2023. Patients were stratified into cohorts based on the presence or absence of a documented SD diagnosis (ICD-10: F45). Propensity sco

The homozygous variant c.797G>A/p.(Cys266Tyr) in PISD is associated with a Spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia with large epiphyses and disturbed mitochondrial function.

Spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasias (SEMD) are a group of genetically heterogeneous skeletal disorders characterized by abnormal vertebral bodies and epimetaphyseal abnormalities. We investigated two families with a new SEMD type with one proband each. They showed mild facial dysmorphism, flat vertebral bodies (platyspondyly), large epiphyses, metaphyseal dysplasia, and hallux valgus as common clinical features. By trio-exome sequencing, the homozygous missense variant c.797G>A/p.(Cys266Tyr) in PISD was found in both affected individuals. Based on exome data analyses for homozygous regions, the

The SHOX gene and the short stature. Roundtable on diagnosis and treatment of short stature due to SHOX haploinsufficiency: how genetics, radiology and anthropometry can help the pediatrician in the diagnostic process Padova (April 20th, 2011).

The growth of the human body depends from a complex interaction between nutritional, environmental and hormonal factors and by a large number of different genes. One of these genes, short stature homeobox (SHOX), is believed to play a major role in growth. SHOX haploinsufficiency is associated with a wide spectrum of conditions, all characterized growth failure such as Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis, Turner syndrome, short stature with subtle auxological and radiological findings and the so called "idiopathic short stature" (short stature with no specific findings other than growth failure). Influence of body dissatisfaction on 1-year change in nutrient intake of overweight and obese inner-city African American children.

This analysis aimed to examine the relationship of baseline body dissatisfaction with 1-year change in nutrient intake of inner-city, overweight and obese, African American children. This is a secondary analysis of 1-year pre-post data available for a convenience sample of 88 children. After adjusting for baseline intake of dietary variables and intervention group status, baseline body dissatisfaction was associated with 1-year increases in intake of energy, and all macronutrients in girls, but not in boys. These relationships were not substantially altered after adjusting for baseline BMIz an

The Mediating Role of Misinterpretations and Neutralizing Responses to Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts in Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders.

Background. Cognitive-behavioral theories suggest that obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) develop from maladaptive misinterpretations and coping strategies of unwanted intrusive thoughts (UITs). Models of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD) propose that these symptoms stem from similar misinterpretations of common UITs relating to perceived defects in appearance and illness. This study examines whether maladaptive misinterpretations and control strategies leading to the escalation of obsessional UITs to OCD symptoms also have a similar effect on the

A Novel Mobile Tool (Somatomap) to Assess Body Image Perception Pilot Tested With Fashion Models and Nonmodels: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Distorted perception of one's body and appearance, in general, is a core feature of several psychiatric disorders including anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder and is operative to varying degrees in nonclinical populations. Yet, body image perception is challenging to assess, given its subjective nature and variety of manifestations. The currently available methods have several limitations including restricted ability to assess perceptions of specific body areas. To address these limitations, we created Somatomap, a mobile tool that enables individuals to visually represe

Short-term functions and long-term consequences of checking behavior as a transdiagnostic phenomenon: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Checking behaviour (CB) occurs in various mental health problems. Cognitive-behavioural models for these mental disorders share similar theoretical assumptions. Thus, they postulate a negative reinforcing effect of CB by reducing negative affect (ie, anxiety) and a maintenance of the pathology due to a lack of reality testing of concerns. This paper details methods for a systematic review that will be conducted to synthesise empirical evidence testing these theoretical assumptions across obsessive-compulsive, generalised anxiety, eating, body dysmorphic and illness anxiety disord
