Differences in Tsimane children's growth outcomes and associated determinants as estimated by WHO standards vs. within-population references.

Anthropometric measures are commonly converted to age stratified z-scores to examine variation in growth outcomes in mixed-age and sex samples. For many study populations, z-scores will differ if calculated from World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards or within-population references. The specific growth reference used may influence statistical estimates of growth outcomes and their determinants, with implications for biological inference. We examined factors associated with growth outcomes in a sample of 152 Tsimane children aged 0-36 months. The Tsimane are a subsistence-scale popula

Knowledge and experiences of Chagas disease in Bolivian women living in Spain: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, Spain has the highest number of people with Chagas disease (CD). Bolivian migrants account for 81% of the reported cases. One of the priorities in controlling the disease is prevention of mother-to-child transmission. Despite under-diagnosis in Spain being estimated at 90%, there are currently few studies that explore the social and cultural dimensions of this disease. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge and experiences of Bolivian women with CD, in order to generate a useful understanding for the design and implementation of public health init

Crowding effect on adult growth, pre-patent period and egg shedding of Fasciola hepatica.

Fascioliasis pathogenesis depends on fluke burden. In human hyperendemic zones, individual infection intensities reach very high levels and the majority of infected subjects should be in the advanced chronic phase. The rat model offers a useful approach for pathological research in the advanced chronic period. The influence of infection intensity per rat on fluke development, pre-patent period and egg shedding (eggs/g faeces/worm) was analysed in 3 groups (I: 1-3 worms/rat; II: 4-6; III: 7-9). Ontogenetic trajectories of fluke body measures followed a logistic model. Results showed that when t

New regimens of benznidazole monotherapy and in combination with fosravuconazole for treatment of Chagas disease (BENDITA): a phase 2, double-blind, randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Current treatment for Chagas disease with the only available drugs, benznidazole or nifurtimox, has substantial limitations, including long treatment duration and safety and tolerability concerns. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of new benznidazole monotherapy regimens and combinations with fosravuconazole, in the treatment of Chagas disease. METHODS: We did a double-blind, double-dummy, phase 2, multicentre, randomised trial in three outpatient units in Bolivia. Adults aged 18-50 years with chronic indeterminate Chagas disease, confirmed by serological testing and po

Microbiota assembly, structure, and dynamics among Tsimane horticulturalists of the Bolivian Amazon.

Selective and neutral forces shape human microbiota assembly in early life. The Tsimane are an indigenous Bolivian population with infant care-associated behaviors predicted to increase mother-infant microbial dispersal. Here, we characterize microbial community assembly in 47 infant-mother pairs from six Tsimane villages, using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of longitudinal stool and tongue swab samples. We find that infant consumption of dairy products, vegetables, and chicha (a fermented drink inoculated with oral microbes) is associated with stool microbiota composition. In stool and to

Screening for Trypanosoma cruzi infection (Chagas disease) in the Latin American population living with HIV in London.

BACKGROUND: There are an estimated 2482 people born in Latin American countries receiving care for HIV in the United Kingdom. Although national guidance recommends screening for Trypanosoma cruzi infection (Chagas disease) in this population, there is no formal screening programme. The aim of this study was to investigate the sero-epidemiology of T. cruzi in Latin American people living with HIV in London, with a view to informing screening strategies. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, using serological screening for T. cruzi and questionnaires. Adults receiving HIV care in three Lon

Effects of exercise on peripheral hypercapnic chemosensitivity during high altitude acclimatization.

Hypercapnic sensitivity of the peripheral chemoreceptors can be enhanced by sustained exposure to high altitude (HA), leading to a greater ventilatory response to hypercapnic stimulus. Exercise is known to also increase peripheral hypercapnic chemosensitivity (PHC) in an intensity-independent manner. We sought to determine how sustained exposure to hypobaric hypoxia influences exercise-induced potentiation of PHC. Twenty-one healthy participants were recruited to complete a maximal and submaximal exercise test at both low altitude (LA; Calgary, Canada, 1,100 m) and high altitude (HA; La Paz, B

Genomic epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bloodstream infections in South America during 2019 supports regional surveillance.

Staphylococcus aureus remains one of the leading causes of infections worldwide and a common cause of bacteraemia. However, studies documenting the epidemiology of S. aureus in South America using genomics are scarce. We hereby report on the largest genomic epidemiology study to date of both methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) in South America, conducted by the StaphNET-SA network. We characterised 404 genomes recovered from a prospective observational study of S. aureus bacteraemia in 58 hospitals from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Ur

Understanding the widespread use of veterinary ivermectin for Chagas disease, underlying factors and implications for the COVID-19 pandemic: a convergent mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVES: Veterinary ivermectin (vet-IVM) has been used widely in Latin America against COVID-19, despite the lack of scientific evidence and potential risks. Widespread vet-IVM intake was also discovered against Chagas disease during a study in Bolivia prior to the pandemic. All vet-IVM-related data were extracted to understand this phenomenon, its extent and underlying factors and to discuss potential implications for the current pandemic. DESIGN: A convergent mixed-methods study design including a survey, qualitative in-depth interviews (IDI) and focus group discussions (FGD). SETTING:

In Haiti, Cubans Among First Responders, Again: Luis Orlando Oliveros-Serrano MD Coordinator, Cuban Medical Team in Haiti.

Soaring summer temperatures, systematic urban and political violence, unreliable infrastructure-power outages, water shortages, sporadic transportation and interruption of other basic services-plus the illness, death and economic straits wrought by COVID-19, are what Haitians awake to every day. On the morning of August 14, 2021, they also woke to the earth in the throes of violent, lethal convulsions caused by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, along the same fault line responsible for the devastating 2010 disaster and stronger still. As if this weren't enough, Tropical Storm Grace was bearing down

Influence of Climatic Factors on Human Hantavirus Infections in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: With the current climate change crisis and its influence on infectious disease transmission there is an increased desire to understand its impact on infectious diseases globally. Hantaviruses are found worldwide, causing infectious diseases such as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS)/hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in tropical regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). These regions are inherently vulnerable to climate change impacts, infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters. Hantaviruses are zoonoti

Development of peptide-based lineage-specific serology for chronic Chagas disease: geographical and clinical distribution of epitope recognition.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by infection with the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a serious public health issue in Latin America. Genetically diverse, the species is sub-divided into six lineages, known as TcI-TcVI, which have disparate geographical and ecological distributions. TcII, TcV, and TcVI are associated with severe human disease in the Southern Cone countries, whereas TcI is associated with cardiomyopathy north of the Amazon. T. cruzi persists as a chronic infection, with cardiac and/or gastrointestinal symptoms developing years or decades after initial infection. Identif

Real-world implementation and clinical outcomes of a regional prenatal screening programme for Trypanosoma cruzi infection in a non-endemic European setting: an 11-year retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In non-endemic countries, congenital transmission has become the main source of new Trypanosoma cruzi infections. Prenatal screening programmes targeting women from endemic areas are recommended, yet long-term real-world evaluations in Europe remain limited. We assessed the implementation of a regional prenatal screening programme and the association between maternal T. cruzi infection and maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: We conducted an 11-year retrospective cohort study (2014-2024) at a tertiary hospital in Valencia, Spain. All pregnancies in women born in endemic countr
