Gut microbiome profiling of antibiotic-treated Mystus cavasius using culture-based and shotgun metagenomic approaches.

Antibiotic use in aquaculture prevents disease and promotes growth but can disrupt the gut microbiome and drive resistance. The study profiled the gut microbiome of antibiotic-treated Mystus cavasius using both culture-based and shotgun metagenomic approach. Culture-dependent analysis revealed a significant 2-threefold reduction in total viable bacterial count in treated fish. Phylogenetic analysis of 12 cultured isolates revealed treatment-driven enrichment of Bacillus, Enterobacter and Aeromonas. Antibiotic susceptibility testing further revealed increased resistance profiles among isolates

Immunological and molecular evaluation of zoonotic metacercarial infection in freshwater fish: A cross-sectional analysis.

Improperly cooked fish, carrying active metacercariae (MCs), can pose a significant risk for transmitting fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FBZTs) to human consumers. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of FBZTs by conducting a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis involving various fish species, such as Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), and red-belly tilapia (Tilapia zillii). These fish specimens were collected from distinct Egyptian governorates, specifically Giza, Kafr al-Shaykh, and Fayoum. The recovered flukes from experimentally infected

Oxyuricassis ekstromi n. sp. (Oxyurida: Pharyngodonidae) from Lasiancistrus saetiger (Siluriform: Loricariidae) from the Eastern Amazon.

Oxyuricassis ekstromi n. sp. is the third species of the genus described from the intestine of Lasiancistrus saetiger Armbruster in Brazil. This species can be easily differentiated from its congeners by the presence of a tooth-like sclerotized piece that occupies half of the stoma and absence of spine projections on the tail of both males and females. Also, males of the new species lack caudal alae present in Oxyuricassis coronatus and Oxyuricassis hexaspinatus. Additionally, we observed a different number and pattern of the distribution of cloacal papilla; males of O. coronatus and O. hexasp

Relationship of methyl mercury accumulation with lipid and weight in two river cat fish species, Wallagoo attu and Mystus aor, from West Bengal, India.

This study focuses on mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in Indian cat fish, Wallagoo attu and Mystus aor, from different rivers. Methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations were determined in muscle tissue of two different parts, ventral and dorsal part, of each species and the levels of organic mercury were co-related with lipid content of each part. The MeHg concentrations increased in a linear fashion with both weight and age for these river species. The average concentration of MeHg was found to be 0.93 ± 0.60 and 1.26 ± 0.62 μg Hg g(-1) (expressed in wet weight basis) for ventral and dorsal parts, re

A new species of Creptotrema (Allocreadiidae) in Cambeva davisi (Siluriformes) from river streams in fragments of the Atlantic Rainforest, southern Brazil.

We described Creptotrema cambeve n. sp. from the intestine of the Brazilian catfish Cambeva davisi (Haseman, 1911) (= Trichomycterus davisi) based on integrative analyses using morphological and molecular approaches. Creptotrema cambeve n. sp. closely resembles morphologically Creptotrema paraense Vicente, Santos & Souza, 1978, which was described from a siluriform fish in Northern Brazil; however, the two species differ mainly in the oral and ventral sucker sizes and the distribution of the vitellaria. The phylogenetic analyses of the 28S rDNA placed the sequences of the new species in a mono

Validation of a quantitative PCR assay for the detection of 2 Flavobacterium columnare genomovars.

Flavobacterium columnare is the causative agent of columnaris disease in a variety of fish hosts. Using modifications to previously established protocols, a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay was validated for the detection of 2 predominant F. columnare genomovars. The oligonucleotide primer and probe combination was designed to amplify a 203-bp region of the chondroitin AC lyase gene (GenBank AY912281) of F. columnare. There were no significant differences in amplification between genomovars. Comparable quantities of genomic DNA from 10 F. columnare strains, 5 representatives of each genomovar, pr

Isolation and identification of Flavobacterium columnare and Streptococcus iniae antibacterial compounds from the terrestrial plant Atraphaxis laetevirens.

Columnaris disease, enteric septicemia of catfish, and streptococcosis are common bacterial diseases of certain freshwater fish and are caused by Flavobacterium columnare , Edwardsiella ictaluri , and Streptococcus iniae , respectively. During the process of evaluating several species of plants to isolate and identify compounds with toxicity against these bacteria, a promising extract from the aerial parts of the terrestrial plant Atraphaxis laetevirens (Ledeb.) Jaub. et Spach (Polygonaceae Juss.) was selected for bioassay-guided fractionation using a rapid microplate bioassay. The active dich

[Marine life envenomations: example in New Caledonia].

Marine life in the waters of New Caledonia is extraordinarily rich. However some of the animals inhabiting this wonderland are dangerous including a number of venomous species. A retrospective study conducted at the Territorial Hospital in Noumea for the three-year period between 1995 and 1998 showed that nearly 200 people/year were victims of envenomation by marine animals. Findings also indicated that the incidence of envenomation was rising as the practice of marine activities by the local population and tourists increased. Venomous species can be classified into 4 categories according to t

Fish lesions in the Chesapeake Bay: Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates and other etiologies.

Ulcerative lesions and mass mortalities of Atlantic estuarine fish, particularly menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), have been associated with exposure to Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates and their toxins. We collected fish from the Chicamacomico River, Maryland, and observed solitary ulcerative lesions on the majority of menhaden sampled. One striped bass (Morone saxatilis) had an area of reddening around the base of the dorsal fin. Bluegill (Lepomis machrochirus), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and carp (Cyprinus carpio) were externally nonremarkable. Hist

Ortholinea paraensis n. sp. (Myxosporea: Ortholineidae) infecting the urinary bladder of Ageneiosus ucayalensis Castelnau, 1855 (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) in the Amazon region of Brazil.

The present study describes a new parasite species of the myxozoan genus Ortholinea, based on the interpretation of morphological and molecular parameters. This species was found infecting the urinary bladder of the driftwood catfish Ageneiosus ucayalensis, captured in the region of Santo Antônio and Guajará bays, in the Amazonian state of Pará, Brazil. Plasmodia and myxospores were observed in pairs in the urinary bladder, either floating freely or adhered to the mucosa. The myxospores are spherical in the frontal view and valvular, with two equal, sub-spherical polar capsules, oriented diver

Antibiotic resistance profiles of sentinel bacteria isolated from aquaculture in Cambodia.

The misuse of antibiotics and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a concern in the aquaculture industry because it contributes to global health risks and impacts the environment. This study analyzed the AMR of sentinel bacteria associated with striped catfish (Pangasisanodon hypophthalmus) and giant snakehead (Channa micropeltes), the two main fish species reared in the pond culture in Cambodia. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of the recovered isolates from fish, water, and sediment samples revealed the presence of bacteria, such as 22 species belonging to families Aer

The influence of gill and liver metabolism on the predicted bioconcentration of three pharmaceuticals in fish.

The potential for xenobiotic compounds to bioconcentrate is typically expressed through the bioconcentration factor (BCF), which has gained increased regulatory significance over the past decade. Due to the expense of in vivo bioconcentration studies and the growing regulatory need to assess bioconcentration potential, BCF is often calculated via single-compartment models, using K(OW) as the primary input. Recent efforts to refine BCF models have focused on physiological factors, including the ability of the organism to eliminate the compound through metabolic transformation. This study looks

The origin of the mammalian form of GnRH in primitive fishes.

The presence of neuroendocrine hormones in extant agnathan fishes suggests that a method of control involving these hormones was operating 500-600 million years ago in emerging vertebrates. Data on a limited number of species show that several members of the GnRH family of peptides may have arisen in non-teleost fishes. Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) GnRH has a unique composition and has not been detected in other vertebrates. It is not yet clear whether the chicken II GnRH-like molecule arose in cartilaginous fishes, but a chromatographically and immunologically similar molecule is found in dog

A multi-biomarker approach to assess the exposure effects of MPs and/or sodium lauryl sulfate on Clarias Gariepinus.

Pollutants impact fish health, leading to environmental diseases. Anionic surfactant detergents and MPs (MPs) consist serious threat in freshwater environments either lonely or in combination. However, their combined effects are not well studied. Our research therefore focuses on studying the harmful effects of the anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and polyethylene MPs (PMPs) on the biology of freshwater African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), either alone or in combination. A 15-day exposure trial to PMPs (10 mg/L), SLS (4 mg/L), or their combination was conducted. Hematological, b

Assessment of water quality of selected rivers in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria using biomarkers in Clarias gariepinus.

Petroleum exploration has continued to impact negatively the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Oil spills from petroleum exploration contaminate both the aquatic and non- aquatic environments and destroy the ecosystem which makes people in these regions to be prone to diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disease, infertility, and sterility and also poverty. Some oxidative stress markers of the liver and muscle of fish (Clarias gariepinus) from Apata, Araromi, and Mahin rivers (located in the Niger Delta region) were compared with those of fish samples from a clean f

A new species of Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 based on molecular and morphological analysis of metacercariae from African siluriform fishes.

In the Afrotropic region, the genus Clinostomum is represented by four accepted and four unnamed species distinguished using molecular data. Here, we describe one of the four unnamed species as Clinostomum ukolii n. sp. based on metacercariae from siluriform fishes (Synodontis batensoda, Schilbe intermedius) collected in Nigeria and South Africa. The new species is distinguished by molecular data (39 new sequences of partial cytochrome c oxidase I ≥ 6.7% divergent from those of other species) and morphological differences from named and unnamed species in the same region. Metacercariae of C. u

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in the brain and pituitary of the teleost, Clarias batrachus and its role in regulation of hypophysiotropic dopamine neurons.

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in mammals and also regulates prolactin secretion, directly or indirectly via tuberoinfundibular dopamine neurons. Although TRH is abundantly expressed in teleost brain and believed to mediate neuronal communication, empirical evidence is lacking. We analyzed pro-TRH-mRNA expression, mapped TRH-immunoreactive elements in the brain and pituitary, and explored its role in regulation of hypophysiotropic dopamine (DA) neurons in the catfish, Clarias batrachus. Partial pro-TRH transcript from C. batrachus transcri

The use of large and small subunits of ribosomal DNA in evaluating phylogenetic relationships between species of Cornudiscoides Kulkarni, 1969 (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) from India.

Two partial regions of ribosomal DNA (28S and 18S) were used to evaluate genetic variations among the species of Cornudiscoides, viz. C. proximus, C. geminus and C. agarwali, all parasites of Mystus vittatus (Bagridae) from River Gomati, Ganges River basin, India. Our findings demonstrated that both the large and small ribosomal subunits are useful for species identification and genetic characterization of parasites, leading to resolution of inter/intra-relationships at generic and specific levels. The secondary structures of all three species for 28S and 18S rRNA genes contained exact pattern
