Biopsied jaw lesions in Kuwait: a six-year retrospective analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency of jaw lesions in Kuwait. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biopsy records and microscopic sections of all jaw biopsies seen in the Department of Histopathology at Amiri Hospital, Kuwait, during the period January 2004 to December 2009 were reviewed. The biopsies were divided into three major groups: developmental/inflammatory/reactive lesions (group 1), cystic lesions (group 2), and tumors and tumor-like lesions (group 3). Groups 2 and 3 were subdivided into odontogenic and nonodontogenic. RESULTS: Three hundred and eighty-five

Failed eruption of the permanent canine following open reduction of a mandibular fracture in a child.

A 10-year-old patient with failed eruption of the right mandibular canine associated with a retained metal plate previously placed to reduce a mandibular body fracture is presented. The incidence and site of mandibular fractures related to the developing permanent dentition and the relevance of this to popular methods of fixation employed in the reduction of fractures is discussed.

[The formation of tooth germs in teratomas].

The teeth buds which are observed in some teratomas ought to provide a useful system for the study of the development of organ structures in these tumours. They exhibit well defined characteristics in space and time. In contrast with normal development tooth bud formation in teratomas display malformations and other observable characteristics which are primarily the consequence of defects in coordination of activities among cells. Cyto-differentiation appears to be normal and the defective organogenesis must represent a breakdown of the principles which underlie the organization of structures.

Histopathological analysis of 30 specimens of glandular odontogenic cyst.

Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOC) are relatively rare, and require differentiation from radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, and central mucoepidermoid carcinoma of jawbone. We conducted clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical analysis to elucidate the relationship between the clinical behavior and histopathological features, as well as the origin of tissues and factors related to the development of GOC. Thirty specimens from 29 patients (19 males, 11 females; mean age 51.8, range 18-85 years) diagnosed histopathologically with GOC were studied. By location site, mandibular molar r

Diagnostic value of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for unilocular cystic-type ameloblastomas with homogeneously bright high signal intensity on T2-weighted or STIR MR images.

Typical MR images of ameloblastomas on T2-weighted image (WI) or short inversion time inversion-recovery (STIR) show multiple bright high-signal-intensity loci on a high-signal-intensity background. Unilocular cystic-type ameloblastomas show homogeneously bright high signal intensity on T2WI or STIR as a water-like signal intensity. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish unilocular cystic-type ameloblastoma from other cystic lesions such as keratocystic odontogenic tumors, radicular cysts (residual cysts) and dentigerous cysts only on the basis of MRI signal intensity. In the present study,

Cystic variant of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a benign, locally aggressive odontogenic neoplasm characterized by sheets and nests of epithelial cells with deeply eosinophilic or occasionally clear cytoplasm, calcifications, and eosinophilic amorphous material that stains positive for amyloid. Although many cases of CEOT are associated with impacted teeth and occasionally appear radiographically as dentigerous cysts, a true cystic variant has not been previously reported. We report a 15-year-old white male with a large cystic maxillary lesion that filled most of the left maxillary sinus. It

Regional macrodontia and regional bony enlargement associated with congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face presenting as unilateral facial hyperplasia. Brief review and case report.

Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CIL-F) is a rare lesion. Presented here is a review of the literature concerning this condition, with the report of a case with clinical signs indistinguishable from those of unilateral facial hyperplasia. Previously unreported clinical and radiographic features of regional bony hypertrophy and macrodontia associated with this case of CIL-F are described and the proposition raised that previously reported cases of unilateral facial hyperplasia may have been due to CIL-F. It is suggested that the clinical findings in this case of facial asymmetry

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (adenoameloblastoma).

Two cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumour affecting the jaws of two young Nigerian Africans are described. One was diagnosed clinically as a cyst, the other as an ossifying fibroma, but their true nature was later unmasked by histopathological studies. Although considered rare, the adenomatoid odontogenic tumour should be borne in mind in the differential diagnosis of radiolucent lesions of the jaws since an incorrect diagnosis may lead to mutilating surgery whereas the lesion is amenable to a conservative surgical approach. It is also important to examine histologically all excised specimen

Pathologic jaw lesions associated with impacted teeth.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathologic diagnoses and radiographic characteristics of lesions associated with impacted teeth. In this retrospective study, 2624 biopsy reports were assessed. If the report was a record of a pericoronal lesion, the age and sex of the patient and the location, microscopic diagnosis, radiographic features, and size of the lesion were recorded. The Pearson chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Fisher exact tests were used for statistical analysis. In total, 189 patients (7.2%) had lesions associated with impacted teeth. The mean (SD) age of affected pati

Congenital diseases of the equine head.

Many questions concerning heritability arise when a veterinarian is asked to supervise and treat disease of congenital origin. Genetic counseling, ethics, and legality are often confronted in discussions between animal health professionals and laymen in animal industry. Guidelines have been offered as in the 1984 statement of the Judicial Council of the American Veterinary Medical Association: "Performance of surgical procedures in all species for the purpose of concealing genetic defects in animals to be shown, raced, bred, or sold as breeding animals is unethical. However, should the health

The evaluation of the effect of performing guided lid surgery with enucleation of a cystic lesion; a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts of developmental origin. Enucleation and marsupialization are still considered the blueprint of cystic lesion treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male patient presented complaining of a minimal swelling in his upper jaw with slight tenderness in his upper anterior teeth. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) on the maxilla was requested. The cystic lesion was found to be minimally expansile with intact cortical plates of the maxilla in the affected area. The CBCT was used to fabricate a cutting guide to determi

Odontogenic keratocyst: imaging features of a benign lesion with an aggressive behaviour.

The latest (4th) edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours, published in January 2017, has reclassified keratocystic odontogenic tumour as odontogenic keratocyst. Therefore, odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are now considered benign cysts of odontogenic origin that account for about 10% of all odontogenic cysts. OKCs arise from the dental lamina and are characterised by a cystic space containing desquamated keratin with a uniform lining of parakeratinised squamous epithelium. The reported age distribution of OKCs is considerably wide, with a peak of i

Maxillary unicystic ameloblastoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor. It is often aggressive and destructive, with the capacity to attain great size, erode bone and invade adjacent structures. Unicystic ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic lesion, with clinical, radiographic and gross features of jaw cysts. The lesion histologically shows typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining part of the cyst cavity with or without and/or mural tumor growth. Unicystic ameloblastoma usually presents in posterior mandibular ramus region, while it is rare and atypical in posterior maxillary region. . CASE PRE
