The association between Mullerian anomalies and short-term pregnancy outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between Mullerian anomalies (MuAs) and short-term perinatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study, comparing pregnancy outcome in women with and without MuAs matched by age, number of fetuses and parity in a 1:2 ratio. RESULTS: Among 243 women with MuAs, 156 (64.2%) had bicornuate uterus, 38 (15.6%) had septate uterus, 27 (11.1%) had unicornuate uterus and 22 (9.1%) had didelphic uterus. Compared to controls (n = 486), women with MuAs had higher rates of previous preterm deliveries (PTDs) (20.2 versus 5.9%, p < 0.001) and previous cesarea

Successful pregnancy after in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer in a patient with cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase deficiency and a double uterus: Case report.

RATIONALE: Cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase deficiency (PORD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the POR gene, leading to impaired steroid hormone synthesis and a wide range of multisystem abnormalities. The condition is often associated with reproductive malformations and endocrine disorders, presenting clinically with symptoms such as infertility, menstrual irregularities, and adrenal dysfunction, and may be accompanied by skeletal malformations. Only a very limited number of patients have achieved successful pregnancies through assisted reproductive technology, and

Preliminary application of three-dimensional printing in congenital uterine anomalies based on three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonographic data.

BACKGROUND: The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has remarkable potential as an auxiliary tool for representing anatomical structures, facilitating diagnosis and therapy, and enhancing training and teaching in the medical field. As the most available diagnostic tool and it is routinely used as the first approach in diagnosis of the uterine anomalies, 3D transvaginal ultrasonography (3D-TVS) has been proposed as non-invasive "gold standard" approach for these malformations due to high diagnostic accuracy. Despite holding promise of manufacturing 3D printed models based on 3D-TVS data,

The potential risk of enzootic Trypanosoma cruzi transmission inside four training and re-training military battalions (BITER) in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Colombia's National Army is one of the largest military institutions in the country based on the number of serving members and its presence throughout the country. There have been reports of cases of acute or chronic cases of Chagas disease among active military personnel. These may be the result of military-associated activities performed in jungles and other endemic areas or the consequence of exposure to Trypanosoma cruzi inside military establishments/facilities located in endemic areas. The aim of the present study was to describe the circulation of T. cruzi inside facilities

A Novel Marsupial Hepatitis A Virus Corroborates Complex Evolutionary Patterns Shaping the Genus Hepatovirus.

The discovery of highly diverse nonprimate hepatoviruses illuminated the evolutionary origins of hepatitis A virus (HAV) ancestors in mammals other than primates. Marsupials are ancient mammals that diverged from other Eutheria during the Jurassic. Viruses from marsupials may thus provide important insight into virus evolution. To investigate Hepatovirus macroevolutionary patterns, we sampled 112 opossums in northeastern Brazil. A novel marsupial HAV (MHAV) in the Brazilian common opossum (Didelphis aurita) was detected by nested reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). MHAV concentration in the li

Corrected evaluation of the breech presentation outcome based on etiology of this presentation in congenitally malformed uterus.

BACKGROUND: Breech presentation (BP) results from at random filling of the intrauterine cavity, with an equal probability for a BP or cephalic presentation (CP). Each fetus in BP has its "pair" in CP randomly assumed CP. Direct comparison of BP and CP makes bias to less expressed differences between these two groups. It is therefore necessary to subtract the number of fetuses/newborns from the CP set that are identical to the number of fetuses/newborns in the BP set, with identical characteristics, and add this group to the BP set before comparing them to the rest of the CP fetuses/newborns in

The Role of Laparoscopic Surgery in Gynecological Congenital Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Müllerian duct anomalies (MDAs) comprise a heterogeneous group of congenital malformations of the uterus, cervix and vagina that can impair menstruation, sexual function and fertility. Over the past three decades, minimally invasive techniques have largely replaced laparotomy for their surgical management; yet, data remain fragmented across small series and diverse anomaly types. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize contemporary evidence on laparoscopic and robotic management of MDAs, highlighting indications, key surgical techniques and reproductive and functional outcomes, while addressing

Should we screen for Müllerian anomalies following diagnosis of a congenital renal anomaly?

INTRODUCTION: Despite the well-established embryological relationship in the development of renal and Müllerian structures, no clear guidelines exist regarding screening for Müllerian anomalies (MA) in the setting of a renal anomaly (RA). Delayed diagnosis of MA can have significant reproductive consequences. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of coexisting MA in patients with congenital RA. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study of females age 12-35 years with a diagnosis of RA, identified by diagnosis codes, who were followed for care between 2013 and 2020. Data were coll

Wolffian Origin of Vagina Unfolds the Embryopathogenesis of OHVIRA (Obstructed Hemivagina and Ipsilateral Renal Anomaly) Syndrome and Places OHVIRA as a Female Counterpart of Zinner Syndrome in Males.

BACKGROUND: The classical theory of Müllerian origin of upper vagina fails to explain complex urogenital malformations like OHVIRA syndrome; the Acien's hypothesis, however, unravels the hidden embryopathogenesis. As per Acien, Wolffian (mesonephric) ducts instead of Müllerian ducts and sinovaginal bulbs, give rise to the vagina. The new hypothesis, however, retains the concept of origin of the ureters (with ureters inducing renal development) by the former and the uterus by Müllerian ducts. Thus, a failure of development of mesonephros/mesonephric duct gives rise to absent ureters and hence a

Usefulness of three dimensional transvaginal ultrasonography and hysterosalpingography in diagnosing uterine anomalies.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine anomalies may lead to infertility recurrent miscarriage, preterm labour intrauterine growth restriction and post-partum haemorrhage. Infertility and recurrent miscarriage are relatively common problems in the female population. Diagnostic algorithms in such cases include the evaluation of uterine anatomy Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most accurate technique for visualizing the female genitourinary tract anatomy but as it is expensive and not readily available, it is not useful in everyday practice. Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a frequently performed procedure

Urban ecology of hosts and vectors of Rickettsia in a rickettsiosis-endemic city of the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.

Rickettsioses are vector-borne zoonotic diseases that occur in urban environments. Currently, they are associated with the presence of domestic and synanthropic animals, the ectoparasites that they harbor, and their local habitat. The implementation of prevention actions relies on the understanding of the local ecology of interactions between hosts, vector species, and the etiologic agents. In this context, this study aimed to explore and describe the occurrence of infected mammals and their ectoparasites in human urban dwellings, and those characteristics of urban dwellings associated to the

Axonal guidance during development of the great cerebral commissures: descriptive and experimental studies, in vivo, on the role of preformed glial pathways.

Do structures exist within the embryonic central nervous system that guide axons across the midline during development of the great cerebral commissures (corpus callosum, anterior commissure)? With the use of serial section and reconstructive computer graphic techniques we have found that during normal ontogeny of the mouse forebrain and before the arrival of the pioneer fibers of the corpus callosum at the midline, a population of primitive glial cells migrates medially (through the fused walls of the dorsal septum) from the ependymal zones of each hemisphere. At the midline, and well rostral

History, Rats, Fleas, and Opossums. II. The Decline and Resurgence of Flea-Borne Typhus in the United States, 1945-2019.

Flea-borne typhus, due to Rickettsia typhi and R. felis, is an infection causing fever, headache, rash, and diverse organ manifestations that can result in critical illness or death. This is the second part of a two-part series describing the rise, decline, and resurgence of flea-borne typhus (FBT) in the United States over the last century. These studies illustrate the influence of historical events, social conditions, technology, and public health interventions on the prevalence of a vector-borne disease. Flea-borne typhus was an emerging disease, primarily in the Southern USA and California
