Emotion Recognition and Traffic-Related Risk-Taking Behavior in Patients with Neurodegenerative Diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and Huntington's disease, inevitably lead to impairments in higher-order cognitive functions, including the perception of emotional cues and decision-making behavior. Such impairments are likely to cause risky daily life behavior, for instance, in traffic. Impaired recognition of emotional expressions, such as fear, is considered a marker of impaired experience of emotions. Lower fear experience can, in turn, be related to risk-taking behavior. The aim of our study wa

The associative underpinnings of negative urgency and its role in problematic gambling behavior.

BACKGROUND: Negative urgency -the tendency to lose control under the influence of strong negative emotions- has been proposed to be a sign of malfunctioning emotion regulation mechanisms, and to contribute to severity and complications of gambling disorder and other externalizing behaviors. AIMS AND METHOD: This study is aimed at (1) testing whether negative urgency is linked to resistance to extinction in an emotional associative learning task in a sample of 70 participants, 65 of whom were active gamblers (with emotional pictures as unconditioned stimuli, and color patches as conditioned st

Facial Emotion Recognition and Persecutory Ideation in Paranoid Schizophrenia.

The recognition of facial signals has a crucial role in social interaction. It is well known that people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia have problems in the social domain, predominantly related to misinterpreting the intentions, emotions, and actions of others. The aim of this study was to examine whether there are differences in facial emotion recognition between people with paranoid schizophrenia and healthy controls. In addition, we examined the correlation between facial emotion recognition and the expression of persecutory ideation in people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. T

Conditioned hedonic responses elicited by contextual cues paired with nausea or with internal pain.

Pairing a taste with either internal pain or nausea, despite equivalent effects on voluntary consumption, has dissociable effects on hedonic responses: Only pairing with nausea results in the production of disgust reactions, while pairing with internal pain results in conditioned fear as indicated by immobility. Here, we use orofacial reactions to examine the hedonic responses elicited by contextual, nonflavor, cues paired with nausea produced by injection of lithium chloride (LiCl) or internal pain caused by injection of hypertonic saline. In Experiment 1, aversive orofacial responses were th

Analysis of facial expressions in parkinson's disease through video-based automatic methods.

BACKGROUND: The automatic analysis of facial expressions is an evolving field that finds several clinical applications. One of these applications is the study of facial bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD), which is a major motor sign of this neurodegenerative illness. Facial bradykinesia consists in the reduction/loss of facial movements and emotional facial expressions called hypomimia. NEW METHOD: In this work we propose an automatic method for studying facial expressions in PD patients relying on video-based METHODS: 17 Parkinsonian patients and 17 healthy control subjects were asked

Biases in attention, interpretation, memory, and associations in children with varying levels of spider fear: Inter-relations and prediction of behavior.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive theories suggest that cognitive biases may be related and together influence the anxiety response. However, little is known about the interrelations of cognitive bias tasks and whether they allow for an improved prediction of fear-related behavior in addition to self-reports. This study simultaneously addressed several types of cognitive biases in children, to investigate attention bias, interpretation bias, memory bias and fear-related associations, their interrelations and the prediction of behavior. METHODS: Eighty-one children varying in their levels o

Predicting the accuracy of facial affect recognition: the interaction of child maltreatment and intellectual functioning.

Previous research demonstrates that both child maltreatment and intellectual performance contribute uniquely to the accurate identification of facial affect by children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to extend this research by examining whether child maltreatment affects the accuracy of facial recognition differently at varying levels of intellectual functioning. A sample of maltreated (n=50) and nonmaltreated (n=56) adolescent females, 14 to 19 years of age, was recruited to participate in this study. Participants completed demographic and study-related questionnaires and inte

Differential modulation of neural activity throughout the distributed neural system for face perception in patients with Social Phobia and healthy subjects.

Social Phobia (SP) is a marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. Faces of others are perceived as threatening by social phobic patients (SPP). To investigate how face processing is altered in the distributed neural system for face perception in Social Phobia, we designed an event-related fMRI study in which Healthy Controls (HC) and SPP were presented with angry, fearful, disgusted, happy and neutral faces and scrambled pictures (visual baseline). As compared to HC, SPP showed increased

Paedophilia on the Internet--a study of 33 convicted offenders in the Canton of Lucerne.

BACKGROUND: The connection between the consumption of pornography and "contact-crimes" is unclear. The Internet has facilitated the mass consumption of pornography in general and specifically illegal pornography such as child-pornography. In 1999, the owners of "Landslide Production Inc.", an international provider of child-pornography in the USA were arrested and the credit-card-numbers of their clients were put at the disposal of the law enforcement agencies of the countries concerned. METHODS: Roughly 1300 Swiss citizens were subsequently arrested in the course of the nationwide action "Ge

Medial prefrontal cortex activity associated with symptom provocation in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to identify neural correlates of eating disorders in order to contribute to the debate on the genesis and classification of eating disorders and provide endophenotypes for genetic research. METHOD: Twenty-six female patients with eating disorders (10 with bulimia nervosa, 16 with anorexia nervosa) and 19 healthy female comparison subjects matched for age and education were presented with food and aversive emotional images while brain activity was recorded with functional magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Women with eating disorders identified the food stimuli

Impaired facial emotion recognition in early-onset right mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Anteromedial temporal lobe regions, particularly the amygdala, participate in the recognition of emotions from facial expressions. The authors studied the ability of facial emotion recognition (ER) in subjects with symptomatic epilepsy, evaluating whether mesial temporal lobe damage is related to an impairment in the recognition of specific emotions and whether the onset of seizures in a critical period of life could prevent the development of ER. METHODS: Groups included patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with MRI evidence of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) (n = 33); pati

Emotionally aligned and structurally sorted: How opinion groups divide on climate and asylum.

Comprehensive evidence on affective polarization stems from bipartisan political systems with well-defined partisan identities and unidimensional measures of ingroup favoritism and outgroup dislike, while neglecting shared emotions and intergroup emotional dynamics. This study addresses these gaps. Before the 2021 German federal elections, we surveyed individuals in Germany concerned about climate change (n = 2,477) or asylum policies (n = 3,177) using a large, innovative social media sample. We assessed positive and negative feelings toward supporters and opponents of progressive policies on

Hedonic hotspot in rat olfactory tubercle: map for mu-opioid, orexin, and muscimol enhancement of sucrose 'liking'.

Pleasure plays a crucial role in positive reinforcement and motivation. Brain regions able to amplify positive hedonic reactions to sweetness, known as 'hedonic hotspots', are distributed within the mesocorticolimbic reward systems. The olfactory tubercle (OT), a part of the ventral striatum that receives olfactory input, contains distinct functional domains: the anteromedial domain mediates approach motivation toward odors associated with food, whereas the lateral domain mediates avoidance motivation away from odors associated with danger. However, it has remained unclear whether the OT modul

Characterization of Snarl Types in Healthy Individuals: Establishing a Comparative Baseline for Nonflaccid Facial Paralysis.

Nonflaccid facial paralysis (NFFP) is characterized by hypertonicity of facial muscles, often resulting in a snarl-like expression. This abnormal movement arises from facial synkinesis, where involuntary co-activation of multiple muscles during intentional movement leads to movement dysfunction. There is a lack of literature classifying the underlying mechanism and muscular involvement behind the snarl expression. This study analyzes the snarl in healthy individuals to create a clinically useful comparative baseline for NFFP patients, serving as a clinical guide for NFFP treatment approaches.

Low self-esteem: a refined cognitive behavioural model.

Melanie Fennell's (1997) seminal cognitive approach to low self-esteem was published in Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy. The current paper proposes a refined model, drawing on social theories, and research with people with socially devalued characteristics. This model emphasises how self-esteem relates to perceptions of one's value in the eyes of others. It is proposed that core beliefs typical of low self-esteem relate to one's value in relation to personal adequacy (e.g. having worth or status) and/or to social connection (e.g. being liked, loved, accepted or included). In each of th

An examination of autonomic and facial responses to prototypical facial emotion expressions in psychopathy.

Meta-analyses have found that people high in psychopathy categorize (or "recognize") others' prototypical facial emotion expressions with reduced accuracy. However, these have been contested with remaining questions regarding the strength, specificity, and mechanisms of this ability in psychopathy. In addition, few studies have tested holistically whether psychopathy is related to reduced facial mimicry or autonomic arousal in response to others' dynamic facial expressions. Therefore, the current study presented 6 s videos of a target person making prototypical emotion expressions (anger, fear

Role of affective reactivity induced by cigarette packaging including graphic warning labels: the CASA Study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify whether three types of cigarette pack designs, including three versions of graphic warning label (GWL) plain packs, one GWL absent and branding absent pack (blank) and the smoker's own GWL absent and branding present pack (US), elicit different valence, type and levels of affect. DESIGN: US daily smokers (n=324) were asked to handle each of the five pack types and 'think aloud' their reactions. To avoid a muted familiarity response, exposure to their own US pack followed exposure to at least one GWL plain pack. Reactions were scored on a reactivity scale (-3 to +3) and

Sleep deprivation selectively enhances interpersonal emotion recognition from dynamic facial expressions at long viewing times: An observational study.

Observational and experimental studies have shown that sleep deprivation disinhibits emotional responses to disturbing and rewarding external events. On the other hand, most studies on sleep deprivation and interpersonal emotion recognition report that sensitivity to others' emotions is dampened during sleep deprivation. This is at odds with current neuroscientific theories of social cognition that assume that affective experiences and emotion recognition in others are closely tied at the neural and physiological level. In this observational study we show that sleep deprivation can actually in
