sEMG-based prediction of human forearm movements utilizing a biomechanical model based on individual anatomical/ physiological measures and a reduced set of optimization parameters.

For assistive devices such as active orthoses, exoskeletons or other close-to-body robotic-systems, the immediate prediction of biological limb movements based on biosignals in the respective control system can be used to enable intuitive operation also by untrained users e.g. in healthcare, rehabilitation or industrial scenarios. Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals from the muscles that drive the limbs can be measured before the actual movement occurs and, hence, can be used as source for predicting limb movements. The aim of this work was to create a model that can be adapted to a new us

A Real-Time Full-Chain Wearable Sensor-Based Musculoskeletal Simulation: An OpenSim-ROS Integration.

Musculoskeletal modeling and simulations enable accurate description and analysis of the movement of biological systems with applications such as rehabilitation assessment, prosthesis, and exoskeleton design. However, the widespread usage of these techniques is limited by costly sensors, laboratory-based setups, computationally demanding processes, and the use of diverse software tools that often lack seamless integration. In this work, we address these limitations by proposing an integrated, real-time framework for musculoskeletal modeling and simulations that leverages OpenSimRT, the robotic

VibGrasp: Spatiotemporal Vibration Based Multimodal Haptic Rendering With a Lightweight Exo-Glove for 3D Shape Perception.

Haptic feedback has been employed to enhance shape perception during grasp interactions, improving immersion and task performance in extended reality (XR). Although wearable devices offer precise multi-phalangeal haptic feedback, their bulkiness and complexity often hinder practicality. In addition, fingertip-based tactile feedback often limits users' ability to perceive a continuous and sequential sensation across the finger surfaces during power grasp. We present VibGrasp, a haptic shape-rendering method and a supporting haptic glove that synchronizes spatiotemporal vibrotactile feedback acr

Development and Validation of a Low-Cost Open-Source Force Myography Band for Hand Gesture Recognition.

Wearable systems for hand gesture recognition have gained significant attention in research and clinical applications due to advances in many hand-centric control interfaces for technologies such as upper limb prostheses, hand exoskeletons, and virtual reality for rehabilitation. However, common hand gesture recognition techniques are often associated with high costs and proprietary software which can reduce the accessibility of these devices. Thus, in this work we developed, and feasibility tested a low-cost open-source alternative in the form factor of a wearable forearm band. Our system lev

Effects of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on ankle, knee, and hip quasi-stiffness in overground walking.

Quasi-stiffness characterizes the dynamics of a joint in specific sections of stance-phase and is used in the design of wearable devices to assist walking. We sought to investigate the effect of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on quasi-stiffness of the hip, knee, and ankle in overground walking. 12 participants walked at 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 m/s in 1, 0.76, 0.54, and 0.31 gravity. We defined 11 delimiting points in stance phase (4 each for the ankle and hip, 3 for the knee) and calculated the quasi-stiffness for 4 phases for both the hip and ankle, and 2 phases for the knee. The

Robotic Exoskeleton-Guided Wrist Motion Assessment in Young and Older Adults.

This paper describes motion assessment in young adults (YA) and older adults (OA) during the use of an upper limb rehabilitation robot (ULRR). An experimental protocol was proposed to collect kinematic and surface electromyographic (sEMG) data from 20 participants. The protocol included the use of the ULRR along with an interface to execute standardized wrist movements randomly (flexion, extension, radial deviation, and ulnar deviation) at fixed intervals. For the sEMG, representative features were computed, and for the kinematic data, compensatory movements, reaction times, range of movement,

Older Adult Movement Assessment Through Rehabilitation Software for Upper Limb Exoskeleton.

This work presents a pilot study to analyze the effect of aging on motor performance of young adults (YAs) and older adults (OAs) through wrist movement assessment, using an upper limb rehabilitation robot (ULRR) in passive mode coupled to a maze-solving task serious video game. The proposed approach considers the use of kinematic metrics, such as ROM, path accuracy, and movement smoothness, as quantitative biomarkers that evidence differences between YAs and OAs. An experimental protocol was conducted with 20 participants: 10 OAs and 10 YAs. Standardized wrist movements corresponding to flexi

A Data-Driven Approach to Estimate Changes in Peak Knee Contact Force With Exoskeleton Assistance.

Lower-limb exoskeletons could benefit individuals with knee osteoarthritis by reducing knee loading. Real-time estimation of knee loads could accelerate the development of load-reducing exoskeletons. However, measuring or estimating internal knee forces remains challenging due to the rarity of force-sensing knee implants and complexity of simulation-based methods. We developed two data-driven models to separately estimate the peaks in knee contact force during early and late stance using a limited set of features from electromyography (EMG), ground reaction force (GRF), and knee angle recordin

How Does the Ankle Complex Respond to Cable-Driven Assistance Spanning the Talocrural and Subtalar Joints During Walking?

Cable-driven ankle exoskeletons are primarily designed to assist plantarflexion, but their actuation cables also span the subtalar joint, potentially producing unintended inversion-eversion torques. These unintended torques can affect frontal-plane kinematics, joint coordination, gait stability, and assistance efficiency. This study investigated how the ankle complex responds to multidimensional assistance torques during walking. To this end, we established an assistive torque model based on anatomical joint axes and developed a dual-cable-driven ankle exoskeleton for evaluation. Four assistan

Technical field-evaluation of exoskeleton-assisted overhead work among carpenters.

Carpenters in construction commonly perform overhead work tasks such as installing ceiling panels, plastering, and formwork. While laboratory studies suggest exoskeletons may reduce strain during such work, their effectiveness in real-life conditions remains uncertain. This randomized cross-over field study investigates the effects of a passive shoulder exoskeleton on muscle activity and kinematics in 20 carpenters during overhead work tasks. Results showed reduced peak muscle activity (nEMG) in the shoulders and forearms (-3.1 to -9.4 %), but increased activity in the lower back (2.3-3.4 %) w

A randomized cross-over study protocol to evaluate long-term gait training with a pediatric robotic exoskeleton outside the clinical setting in children with movement disorders.

Individuals with neuromuscular disorders display a combination of motor control deficits and lower limb weakness contributing to knee extension deficiency characterized by exaggerated stance phase knee flexion. There is a lack of evidence for long-term improvement of knee extension deficiency with currently available clinical treatment programs. Our previous work testing a wearable robotic exoskeleton with precisely timed assistive torque applied at the knee showed immediate increases in knee extension during walking for children with cerebral palsy, which continued to improve over an acute pr

Assisting Sit-To-Stand Through Event-Based Electrical Stimulation of Trunk Control: A Preliminary Study.

Independence afforded by functional mobility is invaluable yet inaccessible for those with spinal cord injury (SCI). Regaining mobility skills like sit-to-stand (STS) promotes independence and recovery. Previously, functional electrical stimulation (FES) of leg muscles and exoskeletons have assisted STS, but limitations exist. FES causes fatigue and spasms while exoskeletons cannot activate muscles directly nor suit those with poor trunk control. Thus, hybrid FES exoskeletons are promising but rarely target trunk muscles. This study examined FES of erector spinae for STS assistance with a wear

Recovery of Proprioception in the Upper Extremity by Robotic Mirror Therapy: a Clinical Pilot Study for Proof of Concept.

A novel robotic mirror therapy system was recently developed to provide proprioceptive stimulus to the hemiplegic arm during a mirror therapy. Validation of the robotic mirror therapy system was performed to confirm its synchronicity prior to the clinical study. The mean error angle range between the intact arm and the robot was 1.97 to 4.59 degrees. A 56-year-old male who had right middle cerebral artery infarction 11 months ago received the robotic mirror therapy for ten 30-minute sessions during 2 weeks. Clinical evaluation and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies were perfo

A kinematic and kinetic dataset of lower limb joints during obstacle crossing in healthy young adults.

Obstacle crossing is an essential component of human locomotion, particularly for individuals with lower limb amputations who face elevated risks of imbalance and falls. While prior studies have explored this task, they often lack a comprehensive examination of kinematic and kinetic changes throughout the entire gait cycle across varying obstacle heights. This study creates a novel dataset collected from ten healthy adults performing obstacle crossing at four different heights (7.5 cm, 15 cm, 22.5 cm, and 30 cm). Kinematic and kinetic data (angles and torques of hip, knee, and ankle) were reco

Comparative Effectiveness of Noninvasive Brain-Computer Interface-Based Interventions for Upper Limb Rehabilitation in Poststroke Hemiplegia: Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive brain-computer interface (BCI)-based interventions show promise for poststroke motor recovery. However, the intrinsic complexity of BCI-based interventions limits the determination of their comparative efficacy. OBJECTIVE: Guided by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework, this review evaluated the effectiveness of BCI-based interventions in poststroke upper limb rehabilitation and identify the optimal intervention. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, Embase, Wiley Online Library,CNKI, Wanf

Effects of different intensity training with a lower limb exoskeleton robot on walking function in people with subacute stroke: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb exoskeleton robots provide quantifiable training to overcome the intensity limitations of conventional rehabilitation for post-stroke gait dysfunction. Employing a 2 × 2 factorial design, this study aimed to systematically compare the therapeutic effects of four fixed intervention regimens (combined by two robot-assisted walking training speeds [high vs. routine] and two single-session durations [long vs. routine]) on lower limb walking function recovery in people with subacute stroke. METHODS: This was a randomized, assessor-blind, parallel-group controlled trial with

Real-time brain-computer interface control of walking exoskeleton with bilateral sensory feedback.

PURPOSE: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a pathway to restore ambulation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, existing BCI systems for gait are unidirectional and lack sensory feedback. This study aimed to demonstrate that a bidirectional brain-computer interface (BDBCI) can simultaneously enable real-time brain-controlled walking and artificial leg sensation via electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. METHODS: Epilepsy patients undergoing bilateral interhemispheric subdural electrocorticography (ECoG) implantation were recruited for this proof-of-concept study.

Cerebral Correlates of Robot-Assisted Upper Limb Motion Driven by Motor Intention in Healthy Individuals: An fNIRS Study.

The past few years have seen an exponential growth of the robot-assisted rehabilitation field and new technological developments allowing the integration of the user's intention through detection of physiological information. The inclusion of motor intention is thought to be promising for motor rehabilitation and to facilitate neuroplasticity potentially by stimulating the cortical circuitry more than, or at least differently from, non-voluntary passive motion. Yet, contrasting results are reported in the literature. We aimed here to investigate the importance of the integration of motor inten
