Treatment of shoulder joint luxation with glenoid ostectomy in a miniature donkey.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old 128-kg miniature donkey gelding was evaluated for right forelimb lameness of 7 weeks' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Muscular atrophy of the infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles over the right scapula with a palpable bony prominence over the point of the shoulder was evident. At the walk, the cranial phase of the stride was reduced with adduction of the distal aspect of the limb, dragging of the toe, and lameness (grade, 4/5). Lateral and craniocaudal radiographs of the right shoulder joint revealed lateral luxation of the humerus in relation to the scapula wi

Valgus-related Elbow Pathology Is Not Associated With Decreased Baumann's Angle: A Case-control Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that varus alignment of the elbow has been associated with lateral condyle fractures. However, for other pediatric and adolescent elbow pathologies, the influence of upper extremity alignment has not been investigated. This study aimed to compare elbow alignment (quantified using Baumann's angle) among patients with medial epicondyle humeral fractures and capitellum osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and age- and sex-matched control patients. METHODS: Pediatric and adolescent patients (ages: 5-18 years, inclusive) treated at a tertiary care hospital

Comparison of lateral approach versus anterolateral approach with Herbert screw fixation for isolated coronal shear fractures of humeral capitellum.

BACKGROUND: For coronal shear fractures of humeral capitellum, the lateral approach is the most commonly used surgical approach. However, exposure range of the anterior aspect of the distal humerus is inadequate. The anterolateral approach has also been adopted to overcome this disadvantage. However, this approach seems anatomically complex due to the risk of iatrogenic injury to the radial nerve. So far, the optimal approach for the treatment of capitellar shear fractures remains inconclusive. The purpose of this study is to prospectively review and compare the early clinical and radiographic

Outcomes in children with delayed surgical treatment of medial humeral condyle fractures.

PURPOSE: Medial humeral condyle (MHC) fractures are easily overlooked in young patients. This can lead to delayed or incorrect diagnosis, resulting in delayed treatment, which is often associated with complications such as nonunion, osteonecrosis, fishtail deformity, and cubitus varus. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes in a cohort of paediatric patients who underwent delayed surgery for an untreated MHC fracture. METHODS: From January 2017 to December 2022, we conducted a retrospective study of paediatric patients who underwent delayed treatment f

Forearm as a valuable source of vascularized bone graft for the distal humerus.

BACKGROUND: The nonunion of a distal humeral fracture is a challenging complication. Our aim was to assess the results of the application of pedicled bone flap to treat this problem. METHODS: There were 6 men and 3 women with delayed union or nonunion of the distal humerus treated by 10 procedures of rigid fixation plus radial bone forearm or posterior interosseous bone flaps. A locking plate was applied for fixation in 4 patients and a pin and plate for 5 patients. The olecranon osteotomy was performed in 6 elbows. RESULTS: Patients were a mean age of 49.2 years (range, 31-70 years). The av

A less invasive operative method using a medial cannulated cancellous screw and single plate fixation for the treatment of transcondylar fracture of the humerus in elderly patients in multicenter (TRON group) study.

BACKGROUND: Double plate fixation for transcondylar fracture (TCF) tends to be more invasive to the soft tissue, and often carries a higher risk of postoperative complications, including ulnar nerve neuropathy. This study presents the outcomes of TCF of the distal humerus between patients treated with a single plate and cannulated cancellous screw fixation and patients treated with double plate fixation. METHODS: Between 2011 and 2021, 371 cases involving treatment of distal humeral fracture were recorded in our multicenter (named TRON group) database. Patients of ≥ 65 years of age with TCF t

Isolated coronoid fracture: Assessment by magnetic resonance imaging for concomitant injuries.

BACKGROUND: Ligamentous injury associated with isolated coronoid fracture had been sparingly reported. Concealed or unclear fractures and ligamentous or articular cartilage lesions are promptly acknowledged by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but cannot be entirely pictured in regular radiological assessments. In isolated coronoid fracture, the fragment size is very small and due to the complex anatomy surrounding the coronoid radiographic imaging may not be sufficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of combined osteochondral and ligamentous injuries by magnetic resona

Outcome after operative treatment of proximal humeral fractures in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: The proximal humeral fracture (PHF) (5 %) of the elderly is the third most common fracture after proximal femoral and distal radius fractures. Proximal femoral fractures often lead to a loss of autonomy. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to show how PHF changes the patient's autonomy and the coping with everyday life as well as which factors influence the outcome 1 year (y) after surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 62 patients with surgical treatment of a PHF ≥ 60 y was prospectively collected. With a telephone interview Short Form (SF) 12 (physical and mental health; PH,

Persistent Ulnar Nerve Palsy with Cubitus Valgus Deformity Following a Surgically Treated Flexion-type Supracondylar Humeral Fracture - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar humeral fractures (SHFs) in children are mostly extension-type. SHFs have a high risk of cubitus varus deformity, while valgus deformity is rarely described. Nerve palsy can also occur during or after the injury, with most cases recovering spontaneously. Here, we present a rare case of cubitus valgus deformity after a flexion-type SHF with ulnar nerve (UN) palsy, which was successfully treated by corrective osteotomy and anterior transposition of the UN. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old girl had left-sided cubitus valgus deformity with persistent UN palsy 4 months after

Outcomes following minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) application in tibial pilon fractures - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review evaluates postoperative complications and functional outcomes of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) for distal tibial pilon fractures. This paper aims to fill a key literature gap, as no previous reviews have specifically addressed MIPO for tibial pilon fractures or fractures other than those involving the humeral shaft. METHODS: This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A systematic literature search was done using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from 2000

Total elbow arthroplasty: a radiographic outcome study.

OBJECTIVES: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is becoming a popular alternative to arthrodesis for patients with end-stage elbow arthrosis and comminuted distal humeral fractures. Prior outcome studies have primarily focused on surgical findings. Our purpose is to determine the radiographic outcome of TEA and to correlate with clinical symptoms such as pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an IRB-approved retrospective review from 2005 to 2015 of all patients with semiconstrained TEA. All available elbow radiographs and clinical data were reviewed. Data analysis included descriptive statistics an

Shoulder geometry after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with a medialized glenoid and a lateralized humerus predicts subacromial notching and acromial or scapular spine fractures.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this study was to assess whether the difference between the distance from the acromion to the glenosphere center of rotation (DA) and the distance from the greater tuberosity to the glenosphere center (DGT) influences the incidence of subacromial notching (SaN) in shoulders following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) with a medialized glenoid and a lateralized humerus. The secondary purpose was to evaluate whether this relationship also impacts the incidence of acromion or scapular spine fractures. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study

Functional outcome of semiconstrained total elbow arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the present study was to review the results of primary total elbow arthroplasty with use of the Coonrad-Morrey prosthesis. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) the results in patients with inflammatory arthritis would be superior to those in patients with a traumatic or posttraumatic condition, and (2) the isometric extensor torque after total elbow arthroplasty would be significantly less than that of the contralateral elbow. METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients (fifty-one elbows) had the operation performed by one of three surgeons between November 1, 1989, and
