BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether stone extraction with a loop ureteral catheter (LUC) in distal ureteral stones is associated with a higher frequency of ureteral strictures compared to treatment with primary ureteroscopic stone removal (p-URS) or ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy (l-URS).
METHODS: Five hundred and forty-seven consecutive patients were primarily endourologically treated for distal ureteral stones in our department between 2005 and 2019 and included in the study protocol. Data was retrospectively obtained from the patients' charts and medical reports as well as from office-based u

Purpose: To assess the influence of holmium laser cystolitholapaxy (HLC) concomitantly with holmium laser prostate enucleation (HoLEP) on patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) presenting bladder calculi. Materials and Methods: We present a retrospective analysis of patients with BPH (with or without concomitant HLC) at three Spanish centers. Intraoperative variables (e.g., time and resected tissue), changes in functional parameters of the prostate, and frequency of complications (intraoperative, early postoperative, and at 12 months) in patients with and without HLC were compared. BACKGROUND: Intravenous anesthesia with high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has been reported to benefit oxygen reserves and enhance postoperative recovery in surgeries requiring low neuromuscular blockade. This study investigated whether HFNC improves recovery quality in elderly undergoing ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy (UHLL).
METHODS: We enrolled 106 elderly patients undergoing UHLL, with 96 patients (48 per group) included in the final analysis. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1, stratified by sex) to receive either HFNC (HFNC group) or laryngeal mask airway (LMA) assisted general

BACKGROUND: Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is a known option for the treatment of upper tract calculi with an excellent success. However, the reports of RIRS in prepubertal children are limited. In this study, we evaluated the factors which affected the success rate and the complications of RIRS at renal stone treatment in childhood.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of children under 14 years old who underwent RIRS for renal stone disease between January 2009 and December 2012. Patients' age, gender, body mass index (BMI), stone size, stone location, stone number, intrao

OBJECTIVES: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) occurs in 47-95% of patients recovering from general anesthesia, causing discomfort and increasing the risk of postoperative delirium. Xiao-Xu-Ming-Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concoction that has demonstrated efficacy in relieving urinary symptoms. Thus, we propose the use of this improved traditional Chinese medicine concoction in the form of a hot compress as an inexpensive, effective, and simple intervention for preventing postoperative CRBD.
METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment modality in large-scale quantitative studies. However, although its safety profile has been established, it also has a potential risk of life-threatening complications. We here describe our experience with a patient who developed a huge periureteral hematoma after RIRS with holmium laser lithotripsy.
CASE SUMMARY: A 73-year-old woman visited our center with a complaint of gross hematuria. An enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a 1.5-cm left renal pelvis stone with hydronephrosis.

PURPOSE: To report the application and outcome of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) to remove a large kidney stone during pregnancy.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 30-year-old woman presented with an infected kidney stone (3 cm in size) at 4 weeks of pregnancy. We decided to remove the stone due to the possibility of obstruction and infection and chose to carry out this procedure by RIRS. In order to avoid complications associated with anesthetic, the surgery was carried out after the infection had cleared and when the patient had entered the second trimester of pregnancy. First, we used an ureter

PURPOSE: This is a prospective multicentric comparative study evaluating the performance of XenX-a new dual-purpose device for the prevention of stone fragments migration during ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS).
METHODS: Between March 2014 and January 2015, 41 patients undertaking URS + XenX were matched with 41 patients undergoing standard URS. Patients included had unilateral ureteric stone(s) of 0.5-1.5 cm in maximum size. Demographics, complication rates and surgical outcomes were recorded for comparison. A Likert-like 5-grade scoring system was used for surgeons' evaluation of XenX proper

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic kidney is a congenital anomaly whereby the kidney fails to ascend to its normal anatomical location during early embryonic development. This, in turn, makes traditional surgical approaches for renal calculi challenging.
AIMS: To summarize our experience with robotic-assisted pyelolithotomy (RPPK) for pelvic kidney stones.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent RPPK between 2014 and 2023 was conducted. Demographic data, stone characteristics (size and density), operative details, and postoperative outcomes were collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Four pat

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Digital single-operator cholangioscopy (dSOC) has revolutionized bile duct visualization. Interventions like electrohydraulic or laser lithotripsy, inspection of suspicious areas, and targeted biopsies have become possible quick and easy. One main indication for dSOC remains the evaluation of indeterminate biliary strictures.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We analyzed 180 consecutive dSOCs procedures performed in a high-volume tertiary center to evaluate sensitivity, specificity as well as positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) for indeterminate strictures. Furthermore

Background: Ureteral obstruction is rarely caused by extrinsic compression from the appendix. In addition, mucinous neoplasms of the appendix are rare, found incidentally in 0.2%-0.7% of appendectomy specimens. Case Presentation: We present an unusual case of ureteral obstruction caused by a large appendiceal mucocele. An asymptomatic 53-year-old caucasian male patient, known for recurrent nephrolithiasis, was referred for management of bilateral nephrolithiasis. A noncontrast CT scan found an atrophic kidney with an obstructive 1.8 cm right midureteral stone above a 9 × 4.3 cm appendiceal muc

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: Flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) is a well-established modality for managing urolithiasis in patients with congenital renal anomalies such as horseshoe kidneys (HK), malrotated kidneys (MK), and pelvic ectopic kidneys (PEK). Still, these anatomical variants present unique challenges that complicate stone clearance and procedural planning. We aim to apply machine learning (ML) and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques to identify predictors of stone-free status (SFS) following fURS in patients with anomalous kidneys. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed adult patie
