Scheuermann kyphosis in nonhuman primates.

STUDY DESIGN: A cadaveric survey of the thoracic spines of extant species of nonbipedal primates for the presence of Scheuermann kyphosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and prevalence of Scheuermann kyphosis in quadrupedal species of the closest living relatives to humans to demonstrate that bipedalism is not an absolute requirement for the development of Scheuermann kyphosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The etiology of Scheuermann kyphosis remains poorly understood. Biomechanical factors associated with upright posture are thought to play a role in the development of the disorder. To

An ancient icon reveals new mysteries: mummy DNA resurrects a cryptic species within the Nile crocodile.

The Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is an ancient icon of both cultural and scientific interest. The species is emblematic of the great civilizations of the Nile River valley and serves as a model for international wildlife conservation. Despite its familiarity, a centuries-long dispute over the taxonomic status of the Nile crocodile remains unresolved. This dispute not only confounds our understanding of the origins and biogeography of the 'true crocodiles' of the crown genus Crocodylus, but also complicates conservation and management of this commercially valuable species. We have take

Morphological relationship between the cranial base and dentofacial complex obtained by reconstructive computer tomographic images.

The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships between the cranial base, including the glenoid fossa and maxillofacial morphology, obtained by three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT). The specimens were 45 Skeletal I and Skeletal II dry skulls of modern Japanese males without marked crowding, anterior crossbite, or maxillofacial asymmetry, which had been preserved in the Tokyo University Museum. To examine the differences in the cranial base and maxilla between two groups classified by the median value of N line-A [N defined as a perpendicular line to Frankfort horizontal

[History of classification systems of conjoined twins by specific consideration of the classification systems of Louis Bolk (1866-1930)].

Classification systems concerning conjoined twins have been developed in the nineteenth century by many authors, a.o. J. F. Meckel (1816), I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1832), E. F. Gurlt (1831), Fr. Ahlfeld (1880), C. Taruffi (1881), and in the beginning of the twentieth century, a.o. J. W. Ballantyne (1902) and E. Schwalbe (1907). However, these classification systems were very complex and mainly based on the external morphology of the conjoined twins. In contrast to many other classification systems the professor in Anatomy at the University of Amsterdam Louis Bolk divided conjoined twins in o

Clinical implications of atrial isomerism.

Right atrial isomerism or left atrial isomerism is frequently diagnosed as situs ambiguous without further discrimination of the specific morbid anatomy. Thirty six cases of right atrial isomerism and seven cases of left atrial isomerism were collected from the records and pathological museum at the National Taiwan University Hospital. There was a necropsy report for 18 cases. In all patients one or more of the following conditions was met: (a) isomeric bronchial anatomy, (b) echocardiographic and angiocardiographic evidence of isomerism, and (c) surgical or necropsy evidence of abnormal atria

Demographical aspects of Schmorl nodes: a skeletal study.

STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive study of the association between Schmorl nodes (SNs) and gender, ethnic origin, and age in a normal skeletal population. OBJECTIVES: To gain reliable data on behavioral patterns of SNs in various human groups shedding light on its etiology. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Opinions regarding SNs prevalence in human populations vary greatly (from 5% to 70%). This caveat greatly reduced our ability to recognize the etiology of the phenomenon and understand its clinical significance. METHODS: Two hundred forty human skeleton vertebrae (T4-L5) from a normal adult populati

Cultural engagement and prevalence of pain in socially isolated older people: a longitudinal modified treatment policy approach.

BACKGROUND: It remains uncertain whether cultural engagement positively influences the reduction of pain risk, particularly depending on the social isolation status. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of cultural engagement on the reduction of pain prevalence over a 6-year follow-up period among older people, particularly those experiencing different dimensions of social isolation. METHODS: This study was a prospective longitudinal study. We analysed the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing cohort, consisting of 6468 community-dwelling adults aged ≥50 years old who provided data

Proteomic Analysis of COVID-19 Infection.

There are things that I remember that seemed innocuous at the time but ended up being major events. As a young boy growing up in Canada, I remember listening to a radio broadcast about a young man who was planning to run across the country to raise money for cancer research. I recollect obscure details such as him filling a bottle with water taken from the Atlantic Ocean. The broadcast received little fanfare, and honestly, I cannot remember the date. I was listening to it only because I was waiting for the broadcast of a hockey game to begin. Attention to this endeavor grew over the next week

Two new species of the genus Rhadinoloricaria from Venezuela, and comments on the taxonomic status of species included in Rhadinoloricaria (sensu lato) (Siluriformes: Loricariinae).

Two new species belonging to the genus Rhadinoloricaria were found in the fish collection of the Museo de Biología de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (MBUCV-V). The two new species inhabit localities at the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, one species come from the Cuchivero and Caura Rivers, Bolívar state, and the second species from the upper Orinoco, Casiquiare, Mavaca and Manapiare Rivers, Amazonas state. These localities extend considerably the northern boundary of the geographic distribution of the genus. The two new species exhibit the external morphology and buccal ornamentation p

Population Structure and Climate Effects on Geckobia Infestation in Ptyodactylus Geckos from Israel and West Bank, with Descriptions of G. parva sp. nov. and G. inermis sp. nov.

Scale mites of the genus Geckobia (Pterygosomatidae) are highly specialized permanent parasites of geckos, but their diversity and ecology in arid environments remain poorly understood. We examined 1135 museum specimens of Ptyodactylus geckos collected from 1965 to 1991 across Israel and the West Bank's Mediterranean-desert climate gradient to investigate environmental effects on Geckobia mite distributions and population structure. We analyzed prevalence, intensity, population structure, and seasonal patterns across three climate zones using standard parasitological methods and Köppen-Geiger

Species of the Genus Paroniella Fuhrmann, 1920 (Cestoda: Davaineidae) from Bulbuls (Passeriformes: Pycnonotidae): Redescription of P. perreti (Mahon, 1954) and Description of P. neolestes n. sp. from Africa.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to contribute to the knowledge on the diversity of cestodes of the genus Paroniella Fuhrmann, 1920 parasitising passerine birds of the family Pycnonotidae (bulbuls) in the Afrotropical Region. The only known species of this groups, Paroniella perreti (Mahon, 1954) from Pycnonotus tricolor (Hartlaub) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is poorly described. Therefore, it needed a detailed redescription in order to make a reliable comparison and provide differentiation among this species and newly-collected davaineid specimens. Based on new materi

Mite fauna (Acari: Erythraeidae and Otopheidomenidae) associated with hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) in northeastern Brazil.

The current understanding of ectoparasitic mites, especially those belonging to Otopheidomenidae, has been constrained by limited data derived primarily from museum specimens. To bridge this knowledge gap, we undertook a study to investigate mite infestations on freshly captured hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). From August 2016 to July 2018, we collected samples in the Chapada do Araripe area in the municipality of Santana do Cariri (7°12'33''S, 39°43'22''W, 750 m a.s.l.), Ceará, Northeast Brazil. We attracted and captured sphingids using an artificial light source and then gathered mites

Novel Osteo Refurbishment Method and Choice of Colouring Materials for Anatomy Specimens.

OBJECTIVE: The introduction of competency-based medical education curriculum and a shifted focus towards self-directed learning (SDL) in medical schools across the world has necessitated a reduction of didactic teaching hours. Museum specimens are an indispensable tool in anatomy teaching and can play a pivotal role in fostering and reinforcing SDL. Coloring of specimens makes it attractive and facilitates understanding anatomy. The aims of this study were: (1) weigh up the two commonly used coloring materials in anatomy viz. acrylic paint and nail polish; and (2) to assess the perception of a

Phylogeographic study using nuclear genome sequences of Asip to infer the origins of ventral fur color variation in the house mouse Mus musculus.

While the house mouse (Mus musculus), widely distributed in Eurasia, is known to have substantial coat color variation between and within local populations, in both primary and secondary distribution areas, including the Japanese archipelago, the evolutionary history of the color variation is poorly understood. To address the ventral fur color variation, we quantified the lightness of museum skin specimens, and found that the southern subspecies, M. m. castaneus (CAS), has high and low lightness in dry and rainy geographic regions, respectively. The northern subspecies, M. m. musculus (MUS), h

Obsessive-compulsive disorder in children and youth: neurocognitive function in clinic and community samples.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive impairments are common in OCD, although not well studied in children and youth with the disorder. METHOD: Using the stop-signal task (SST), we measured response inhibition (stop-signal reaction time-SSRT), sustained attention (reaction time variability-RTV), reaction time (RT), and performance monitoring (post-error slowing-PES) in OCD cases and controls from two samples of children and youth. A Clinic OCD group (n = 171, aged 7-17 years) was recruited from a specialty clinic after rigorous assessment. A typically developing (Clinic TD, n = 157) group was enlisted t

Community-based Mobile Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Rural India: Successes and Challenges for Implementation.

Glans penis morphology has been used as a powerful tool in mammal taxonomy to differentiate cryptic species. Neotropical rodent species Akodoncursor and A.montensis are cryptic, and interspecific hybrids are like their parental species. We investigated non-metric and metric phallic characters aiming to differentiate A.cursor from A.montensis. We also evaluated the parental species' influence of the phallic characters on hybrids. We analysed 96 male adults-56 A.cursor, 27 A.montensis, and 13 hybrids, subgrouping species by locality and hybrids by parental species (paternal vs maternal). We veri

Invasive cattle ticks in East Africa: morphological and molecular confirmation of the presence of Rhipicephalus microplus in south-eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus microplus, an invasive tick species of Asian origin and the main vector of Babesia species, is considered one of the most widespread ectoparasites of livestock. The tick has spread from its native habitats on translocated livestock to large parts of the tropical world, where it has replaced some of the local populations of Rhipicephalus decoloratus ticks. Although the tick was reported in Uganda 70 years ago, it has not been found in any subsequent surveys. This study was carried out to update the national tick species distribution on livestock in Uganda as a basis fo

Oral and Dental Examination Findings in European Polecats (Mustela putorius).

Dental and oral diseases in the domestic ferret have been reported, but comparison with their closest wild relative, the European polecat (Mustela putorius), is lacking. Dental and orofacial pathology was evaluated by means of visual examination and dental radiographical analysis of 234 museum skulls. Most of these (70.5%) originated from Austria and the remainder came from seven other European countries. Linguoverted mandibular second incisor teeth were noted in 77% of the skulls. There were 7,268 (91.4% of all potential) teeth available for examination. Few (0.3%) were presumed congenitally
