Review: Enhancing gastrointestinal health in dairy cows.

Due to their high energy requirements, high-yielding dairy cows receive high-grain diets. This commonly jeopardises their gastrointestinal health by causing subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) and hindgut acidosis. These disorders can disrupt nutrient utilisations, impair the functionalities of gastrointestinal microbiota, and reduce the absorptive and barrier capacities of gastrointestinal epithelia. They can also trigger inflammatory responses. The symptoms of SARA are not only due to a depressed rumen pH. Hence, the diagnosis of this disorder based solely on reticulo-rumen pH values is inaccur

Weaning age affects growth, feed intake, gastrointestinal development, and behavior in Holstein calves fed an elevated plane of nutrition during the preweaning stage.

Recent research has revealed potential advantages of feeding an elevated plane of nutrition to calves during the preweaning period. However, calves fed more nutrients preweaning may be more susceptible to depressed growth and weaning stress during the transition from liquid to solid feed. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the age of weaning and feed intake, and its influence on growth, gastrointestinal development, and behavioral indicators in dairy calves fed an elevated plane of nutrition during the preweaning period. To meet this objective, 20 female Ho

Effect of Physical Form and Level of Wheat Straw Inclusion on Growth Performance and Blood Metabolites of Fattening Goat.

The inclusion of straw in high concentrate total mixed rations (TMRs) of male fattening goats can provide the necessary fiber to prevent ruminal acidosis and maintain growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the physical form (PF) of the diet (pelleted vs. conventional) and the straw level (SL) of wheat straw (WS) (15% versus 25%) in total mixed rations on feed intake, growth, total tract digestibility, and blood metabolites of fattening goats. Thirty-two male Beetal goats (27.4 ± 0.28 kg body weight (BW)) were divided randomly into the following four dietary treatmen

Methodical considerations when estimating nutrient digestibility in horses using the mobile bag technique.

Total collection of faeces is considered the golden standard for estimating apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) in horses. However, the evaluation of individual feedstuffs is limited and determination of nutrient digestibility in different segments of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is excluded. The rationale for performing this study was that the mobile bag technique (MBT) can provide information on individual feedstuffs' degradation, and the use of fistulated animals does provide additionally information regarding degradation in individual segments of the GIT. Recommendations for usin

The influence of the lower axial nickel ligand on the catalytic mechanism of methyl-coenzyme M reductase: a QM cluster study.

Methyl-coenzyme M reductase (MCR) is the enzyme responsible for production of methane by microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of ruminants and other anaerobic environments. The enzyme contains a nickel tetrapyrrole cofactor (cofactor F430) that can exist in a number of oxidation states. Previous computational studies of the MCR reaction mechanism have utilised available X-ray structures of the inactive Ni(II) state. However, a recent study by Ragsdale et al. reported crystallographic characterisation of the active Ni(I) state. Here we explore how the new Ni(I) active-site details i

Composition and diversity of gastrointestinal tract fungi in finishing bulls fed different medium-chain fatty acid triglycerides.

BACKGROUND: Previous study has found that gastrointestinal tract (GIT) bacteria are involved in the regulation of medium-chain fatty acid triglycerides (MCTs) on the improvement of growth performance in finishing bulls. At present, the effects of MCT on GIT fungi of finishing bulls has not been reported, whether fungi are also involved in the regulation of the growth performance is still unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate GIT fungal composition and diversity of finishing bulls fed different MCT. RESULTS: The study employed four ruminally fistulated Yanbian cattle (18-month

Open habitats and species differences shape space use in semi-feral cattle and horses across Danish rewilding sites.

Large herbivores can strongly influence ecosystem structure and biodiversity, making knowledge of their space use important for trophic rewilding. We used GPS-tracking data collected over two years from 10 semi-feral cattle and 17 horses across ten Danish rewilding sites to analyse habitat use in a use-availability framework using resource selection functions (RSFs), complemented by direct behavioural observations. Both species showed large individual variability but overall used habitats disproportionately to availability, with higher relative use of open habitats; including dry grassland and

Assessing the nutritional consequences of switching foraging behavior in wood bison.

Diet is one of the most common traits used to organize species of animals into niches. For ruminant herbivores, the breadth and uniqueness of their dietary niche are placed on a spectrum from browsers that consume woody (i.e., browse) and herbaceous (i.e., forbs) plants, to grazers with graminoid-rich diets. However, seasonal changes in plant availability and quality can lead to switching of their dietary niche, even within species. In this study, we examined whether a population of wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) in northeast Alberta, Canada, seasonally switched their foraging behavior, a

Comparison of MicroRNA Transcriptomes Reveals the Association between MiR-148a-3p Expression and Rumen Development in Goats.

The rumen is an important digestive organ of ruminants. From the fetal to adult stage, the morphology, structure and function of the rumen change significantly. However, the knowledge of the intrinsic genetic regulation of these changes is still limited. We previously reported a genome-wide expression profile of miRNAs in pre-natal goat rumens. In this study, we combined and analyzed the transcriptomes of rumen miRNAs during pre-natal (E60 and E135) and post-natal (D30 and D150) stages. A total of 66 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were identified in the rumen tissues from D30 and D150

Redefining feed efficiency through the livestock gut microbiome.

Feed efficiency remains a central goal in livestock production because it determines both economic viability and environmental performance. Yet conventional measures such as feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake often treat efficiency as a host-level outcome and do not fully capture the biological processes that govern nutrient transformation and use. This perspective argues that the gastrointestinal microbiome is a critical, and still underappreciated, mediator of feed efficiency across livestock systems. In ruminants, rumen microbial communities drive the conversion of fibrous feeds

Table salt as a salivary stimulant and buffer substitute in calf diets: Effects on growth performance, rumen fermentation, and economics.

This study evaluated sodium chloride (NaCl) as a natural salivary stimulant and a substitute for conventional buffers in calf diets. We hypothesized that varying the amount and method of NaCl provision would modulate salivation, rumen fermentation, and growth performance. Fifty Holstein calves (46.43 ± 2.19 kg BW; 10 ± 5 days old) were assigned to five treatments in a completely randomized design: T1 (Control, NRC-salt mixed in feed); T2 (NRC-salt, 15% pre-fed); T3 (2 × NRC-salt, mixed); T4 (2 × NRC-salt, 15% pre-fed); T5 (NRC-salt + 0.5% NaHCO₃ buffer). Ecological resilience of the rectal microbiome to environmental stressors in Hulunbuir grazing sheep: response to feed restriction and extreme cold challenge.

The gut microbiota is essential for helping animals to adapt to food shortages and extreme environments. In China's Hulunbuir region, local grazing sheep endure harsh winters characterized by intense cold and limited food supply. Uncovering the adaptive mechanisms that underpin their resilience is essential for improving their productivity, breeding practices, and management strategies. This research investigated the effects of feed restriction (set at 40 % of ad libitum intake) and extreme cold stress (temperature-humidity index set at 22.27) on the dynamics of gut microbiota in Hulunbuir she

Analyses of lncRNAs, circRNAs, and the Interactions between ncRNAs and mRNAs in Goat Submandibular Glands Reveal Their Potential Function in Immune Regulation.

As part of one of the main ruminants, goat salivary glands hardly secrete digestive enzymes, but play an important role in immunity. The immune function of goat salivary glands significantly changes with age, while the expression profile and specific function of non-coding RNA during this process are unknown. In this study, transcriptome sequencing was performed on submandibular gland (SMG) tissues of 1-month-old, 12-month-old, and 24-month-old goats, revealing the expression patterns of lncRNA and circRNA at different ages. A total of 369 lncRNAs and 1699 circRNAs were found to be differentia

In vivo exposure of Albendazole sulphoxide by Haemonchus contortus and correlation between plasma and target tissue or gastrointestinal content dispositions in goats.

Sheep and goats are sharing different helminth parasites including Haemonchus contortus. Control of these helminths is based mainly on the use of anthelmintics. However, in goats, the application of anthelmintics is often carried out mainly at dosages determined for sheep without knowing the real effects and metabolism features. One of the several anthelmintic classes used against these parasites is (pro) benzimidazoles which are still widely in use in small ruminants in many countries. The objective of this study was to determine (i) the correlation between plasma and tissue or gastrointestin
