Pullorum disease caused by Salmonella Pullorum remains an important disease for the poultry industry due to high morbidity and mortality in many countries. Phage therapy is becoming an alternative strategy to control multidrug-resistant Salmonella infections in young chicks. However, how bacteriophages affect the growth performance of chicks infected with S. Pullorum remains poorly understood. Herein, we assessed the therapeutic efficacy of Salmonella phage CKT1 against hypervirulent arthritis-causing S. Pullorum. The results showed that single phage treatment after hypervirulent S. Pullorum i

Berberine (BBR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid, which has been used in the treatment of intestinal mucositis. However, BBR on chemotherapy-induced mucositis in cancer patients remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of BBR on intestinal mucositis induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) using rat model. We detected the degree of intestinal mucosal damage and inflammatory response in 5-Fu treated rats with or without BBR administration, and investigated the changes of fecal metabolites and gut microbiota using 1H NMR spectroscopy and 16S rRNA. The mechanism was further explored by fecal

BACKGROUND: Gut parasites exert an important influence on the gut microbiome, with many studies focusing on the human gut microbiome. It has, however, undergone severe richness depletion. Hygienic lifestyle, antimicrobial treatments and altered gut homeostasis (e.g., chronic inflammation) reduce gut microbiome richness and also parasite prevalence; which may confound results. Studying species closely related to humans could help overcome this problem by providing insights into the ancestral relationship between humans, their gut microbiome and their gut parasites. Chimpanzees are a particularl

Early administration of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (LR) prevents necrotizing enterocolitis and inhibits regulatory T-cell (Treg)-deficiency-associated autoimmunity in mice. In humans, LR reduces crying time in breastfed infants with colic, modifies severity in infants with acute diarrheal illnesses, and improves pain in children with functional bowel disorders. In healthy breastfed newborns with evolving microbial colonization, it is unclear if early administration of LR can modulate gut microbiota and their metabolites in such a way as to promote homeostasis. We gavaged LR (107 colony-fo

Contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI) is a widespread mechanism of bacterial competition. CDI(+) bacteria deliver the toxic C-terminal region of contact-dependent inhibition A proteins (CdiA-CT) into neighboring target bacteria and produce CDI immunity proteins (CdiI) to protect against self-inhibition. The CdiA-CT(EC536) deployed by uropathogenic Escherichia coli 536 (EC536) is a bacterial toxin 28 (Ntox28) domain that only exhibits ribonuclease activity when bound to the cysteine biosynthetic enzyme O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase A (CysK). Here, we present crystal structures of the CysK/Cd

BACKGROUND: Perturbation of commensal intestinal microbiota has been associated with several autoimmune diseases. Mice deficient in interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (Il1rn -/- mice) spontaneously develop autoimmune arthritis and are susceptible to other autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, diabetes, and encephalomyelitis; however, the mechanisms of increased susceptibility to these autoimmune phenotypes are poorly understood. We investigated the role of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) in regulation of commensal intestinal microbiota, and assessed the involvement of microbiota sub

INTRODUCTION: Immunonutrition is a part of nutritional interventions in gastrointestinal cancer patients. It seems to be especially important in the preoperative period to reduce, among others, surgery-related complications. The relation between the immune system and gut microbiota has been previously analyzed. However, the influence of immunonutrients on the composition of gut microbiota is still unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of enteral immunonutrition on gut microbiota in gastric/colorectal cancer patients in the preoperative period.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have provided evidence supporting the presence of a commensal joint microbiome; however, its role in the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritis (SpA) remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the joint microbiome and assess its role in bacterial dissemination and systemic involvement.
METHODS: DBA/1 mice with spontaneous arthritis (SpAD) and healthy BALB/c mice, as well as biopsies from SpA patients, were analyzed by histology (Gram staining and IHC), short-read next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons, and transcriptomics. Shared bacterial speci

Intestinal mucosal barrier damage is regarded as the critical factor through which chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) leads to a variety of physical and mental health problems. However, the exact mechanism by which CUMS induces intestinal mucosal barrier damage is unclear. In this study, 14, 28, and 42 d CUMS model mice were established. The indicators related to ileal mucosal barrier damage (IMBD), the composition of the ileal microbiota and its amino acid (AA) and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolic functions, and free amino acid (FAA) and SCFA levels in the ileal lumen were measur

The problem of rapid decline in egg production performance and poor egg quality is a key obstacle to improving the economic benefits of laying hens. Garcinol is an antioxidant polyphenol plant extract that has multiple physiological functions. Diets with the appropriate amount of garcinol might be able to improve the performance traits and health of late laying hens. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the utilization of garcinol in late laying hens. A total of 400 healthy 59-wk-old Tingfen No. 6 hens were randomly allocated into 4 dietary treatment groups and fed a basal diet supp

Gut microbiota is one of the major elements in the control of host health. However, the composition of gut microbiota in koalas has rarely been investigated. Here, we performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the individual and environmental determinants of gut microbiota diversity and function in 35 fecal samples collected from captive koalas. Meanwhile, blood immune-related cytokine levels were examined by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR to initially explore the relationship between the gut microbiota and the immune system in koalas. The relative abundance of many bacteria, such

BACKGROUND: Mediterraneibacter gnavus is a Gram positive, non-sporulated, obligate anaerobe diplococci. It was first described in 1974 by Moore et al. (under the name Ruminococcus gnavus) from faeces and contents of the gastrointestinal tract of humans. It is a relatively common member of the human gut microbiota, nevertheless its role as a pathogenic bacterium has not been completely elucidated yet and it seems to depend on numerous factors, including those of the host. Here we present a case of prosthetic joint infection following total knee arthroplasty by M. gnavus.

INTRODUCTION: Alterations in microbiota composition have been implicated in a variety of human diseases. Patients with adenomyosis present immune dysregulation leading to a persistent chronic inflammatory response. In this context, the hypothesis that alterations in the microbiota may be involved in the pathogenesis of adenomyosis, by affecting the epigenetic, immunologic, and biochemical functions of the host, has recently been postulated. The aim of the present study was to compare the microbiota composition in the vagina, endometrium, and gut of individuals with and without adenomyosis.

BACKGROUND: Helminth parasitism is a world-wide problem in livestock industries, with major impacts on health, welfare and productivity. The role of the gut microbiota in host-helminth interactions in ruminants has been extensively examined and the present study added to this body of knowledge by assessing the effects of resistance and susceptibility to helminth infection in the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT). Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) for faecal egg count (FEC) were used to select the 10 highly helminth-susceptible (High-FEC) and 10 highly helminth-resistant (Low-FEC) sheep. FEC
