Efficacy of Chitosan and Chlorhexidine Mouthwash on Dental Plaque and Gingival Inflammation: A Systematic Review.

Mouthwash is the effective chemical plaque control mechanism being practiced globally. Teeth and tongue discoloration, a temporary change in taste perception, an increase in calculus deposits, a burning sensation, and genotoxicity of buccal epithelial cells are all possible side effects. This review evaluates the efficacy of chitosan mouthwash in comparison to chlorhexidine mouthwash in combating plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. Electronic databases such as Medline, Cochrane, LILACS, TRIP, Google scholar, and clinical trial registries (CTRI) for ongoing trials were searched with

The Tetragnatha kauaiensis Genome Sheds Light on the Origins of Genomic Novelty in Spiders.

Spiders (Araneae) have a diverse spectrum of morphologies, behaviors, and physiologies. Attempts to understand the genomic-basis of this diversity are often hindered by their large, heterozygous, and AT-rich genomes with high repeat content resulting in highly fragmented, poor-quality assemblies. As a result, the key attributes of spider genomes, including gene family evolution, repeat content, and gene function, remain poorly understood. Here, we used Illumina and Dovetail Chicago technologies to sequence the genome of the long-jawed spider Tetragnatha kauaiensis, producing an assembly distri

Role of IP3 receptor signaling in cell functions and diseases.

IP3 receptor (IP3R) was found to release Ca(2+) from non-mitochondrial store but the exact localization and the mode of action of IP3 remained a mystery. IP3R was identified to be P400 protein, a protein, which was missing in the cerebellum of ataxic mutant mice lacking Ca(2+) spikes in Pukinje cells. IP3R was an IP3 binding protein and was a Ca(2+) channel localized on the endoplasmic reticulum. Full-length cDNA of IP3R type 1 was initially cloned and later two other isoforms of IP3R (IP3R type 2 and type 3) were cloned in vertebrates. Interestingly, the phosphorylation sites, splicing sites,

Hormonal fingerprints: a key to early diagnosis of caries.

BACKGROUND: 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) is one of the widely used anti-hyperthyroid drug used for the treatment of grave's disease. A medicated tool despite being non-invasive, economical and giving reliable results presented with some difficulties, which became prevalent in our subsequent studies, thus prompting us to formulate a new method for predicting oral health status and diseases like diabetes occurring in India. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The current paper would be focusing on the new biological marker-Hormonal Fingerprint that is under trial to predict children for their caries risk suscep

The receptor site of the spider toxin PcTx1 on the proton-gated cation channel ASIC1a.

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are excitatory neuronal cation channels, involved in physiopathological processes related to extracellular pH fluctuation such as nociception, ischaemia, perception of sour taste and synaptic transmission. The spider peptide toxin psalmotoxin 1 (PcTx1) has previously been shown to inhibit specifically the proton-gated cation channel ASIC1a. To identify the binding site of PcTx1, we produced an iodinated form of the toxin ((125)I-PcTx1Y(N)) and developed a set of binding and electrophysiological experiments on several chimeras of ASIC1a and the PcTx1-insensitiv

Tooth Decay: Genetic and Epigenetic Insights Driving the Development of Anti-Caries Vaccines.

Dental caries is now recognised as a multifactorial disease shaped by complex interactions among genetic, epigenetic, microbiological, environmental, and social factors. This narrative review synthesises recent findings on the influence of genetic and epigenetic factors on caries susceptibility, exploring implications for personalised prevention strategies, including novel vaccine approaches. Numerous gene polymorphisms in pathways related to enamel formation, saliva composition, immune response, and taste perception have been linked to increased caries risk, with some effects modulated by sex

Adverse childhood experiences, low self-esteem, and salient stimulus response in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are elevated in individuals with eating disorders (EDs), but how the neurobiology of EDs and ACEs interact is unclear. METHODS: Women 18-45 years old with anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 38), bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 32), or healthy controls (n = 60) were assessed for ACEs and ED behaviours and performed a taste-conditioning task during brain imaging. Mediation analyses tested relationships between ACE score, self-esteem, and ED behaviours. RESULTS: ACE scores were elevated in EDs and correlated positively with body mass index (p = 0.001), drive for

A single residue confers selective loss of sugar sensing in wrynecks.

Sensory receptors evolve, and changes to their response profiles can directly impact sensory perception and affect diverse behaviors, from mate choice to foraging decisions.1-3 Although receptor sensitivities can be highly contingent on changes occurring early in a lineage's evolutionary history,4 subsequent shifts in a species' behavior and ecology may exert selective pressure to modify and even reverse sensory receptor capabilities.5-7 Neither the extent to which sensory reversion occurs nor the mechanisms underlying such shifts is well understood. Using receptor profiling and behavioral tes

The Olfactory Nerve: Anatomy and Pathology.

The human sense of smell is the unique sense through which the olfactory system can identify aromatic molecules within the air and provide a taste sensation. Still, also it plays an essential role in several other functions, warning about environmental safety and even impacts our emotional lives. Recently, olfactory impairment has become an issue of interest due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The dysfunction may vary from only reduced smell detection (hyposmia) to complete loss of it (anosmia) but also includes changes in the normal perception of odors (parosmia). Efficacy of chlorhexidine for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients: a systematic review with meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Oral mucositis occurs in patients undergoing chemoradiation for cancer treatment. It is believed that colonization of ulcerated mucosa by bacteria, fungi, and virus results in secondary infections. The effect of chlorhexidine on the incidence and severity of oral mucositis in patients with cancer was evaluated in this review. METHODS: Studies were limited to randomized placebo-controlled trials. Three databases were searched: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up to May 25, 2016. RESULTS: Ninety-eight abstracts were evaluated by three independent revie

The Home-Delivered Meals Program: A Promising Intervention for Suburban Older Adults Living Alone.

This study examined differences in perceived benefits of home-delivered meals between older adults living alone and those living with others. Recommendations were also discussed to enhance services by examining differences between these two subgroups. This study used secondary data analysis focusing on two open-ended questions that were collected in a client satisfaction survey conducted by AgeOptions, the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in suburban Cook County, Illinois. Out of 199 older adults or their caregivers who participated in the survey, 126 (63.3%) older adults were living alone. All of t

[A case report of bilateral trigeminal sensory neuropathy as one of the initial manifestation of systemic scleroderma (the difficulties of early diagnosis of the primary disease)].

The article describes the case of a patient with bilateral trigeminal sensory neuropathy (TSN), as a possible neurological manifestation of systemic scleroderma (SS). In this patient, intense non-paroxysmal facial pain caused by TSN, subjectively dominated over other manifestations of SS, including Raynaud's syndrome, for at least 1.5 years, thus hampering the diagnosis of the primary disease. In addition to pain, which was not relieved by analgesic medication, TSN was manifested by marked sensory deficit on the face (hypoesthesia / anesthesia) and bilateral sensory deficits in the oral cavity

Comparison of chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation pre and postterm DMFT scores: a preliminary study.

AIMS: Chemotherapy is frequently used as a conditioning regimen to destroy malignant marrow cells before transplantation. Xerostomia, dysphagia, altered taste perception, mucositis, soft-tissue ulceration, and infection are common adverse oral effects of chemotherapy. The study was aimed to compare decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) scores before and after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients undergoing HSCT were included in the study. A pre-HSCT dental treatment protocol was implemented that consisted of restoration of

Effect of peripheral anosmia in dogs trained as flavor validators.

The importance of olfaction in perception of flavor by flavor-validating dogs was studied. The flavor-validation technique is widely used by pet food manufacturers to determine if a given formula is perceived by dogs as having the flavor of a specific meat. Five Beagles were trained as flavor validators; 2 dogs were trained to select beef and 3 to select lamb from a panel of 4 meats. When the dogs had been trained to select the correct meat on 100% of the trials, they were made anosmic. Reversible peripheral anosmia was produced in the dogs by inflating a cuff on a surgically implanted tracheo

Latent inhibition in rats neonatally treated chronically with MK-801: differential effects on conditioned taste aversion and conditioned emotional response.

Chronic neonatal blockade of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors produces various abnormal behaviors in adulthood animals. This study investigated the effects of neonatal treatment chronically with MK-801 in rats on the preexposure-induced retardation of CS-US association, i.e. latent inhibition (LI), of two aversive classical conditioning tasks in adulthood. In conditioned taste aversion (CTA) using sucrose taste and LiCl, neonatal chronic MK-801 (0.4 mg/kg twice/day) treatment attenuated the inhibitory effect of sucrose preexposure on the aversive conditioning, although the treatment did n

Beyond Craving: Cue-Induced Dissociative State Switches in Substance Use Disorders.

Participants in studies of cue-induced drug craving have reacted to cues not only by craving drugs, but also by vividly reexperiencing drug-using sensations and perceptions, for example, tasting cocaine in the back of the throat or feeling euphoric. This study investigated whether such cue-triggered reliving (C-T-R) states are common, what subjective qualities characterize them, their relationship to craving, and their relationship to trauma. Questionnaires and a PTSD screening tool were administered to 77 participants recruited from substance use disorder treatment and self-help fellowships,
