A comparative study of root coverage obtained with guided tissue regeneration utilizing a bioabsorbable membrane versus the connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft.

Obtaining predictable root coverage has become an important part of periodontal therapy. The purpose of this study was to compare two techniques of obtaining root coverage. The two techniques were the connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft and guided tissue regeneration with a bioabsorbable polylactic acid softened with citric acid ester membrane. The connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft had a mean root coverage of 97.1%, and the guided tissue regeneration procedure produced a mean root coverage of 75.1%. This difference was not statistically sig

Combined use of root conditioning, fibrin-fibronectin system and a collagen membrane to treat a localized gingival recession: a 10-case report.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of combined root surface conditioning with tetracycline HCI, fibrin sealing system, guided tissue regeneration procedure and coronal sliding flap application in the treatment of localized gingival recessions. The present study was conducted on 10 patients with localized facial recessions of at least 3mm. A trapezium-shaped flap was elevated apically to the margin of the bone dehiscence and the root surface was thoroughly scaled by hand instruments and burs. Tetracycline HCI (pH 1.9) solution was then topically applied for 5 minutes

Comparative study of a bioresorbable and a non-resorbable membrane in the treatment of human buccal gingival recessions.

Twelve patients with bilateral comparable gingival recessions were treated using a split mouth design, to compare the relative success of root coverage by two regenerative procedures. The areas of recession treated were Class I or II according to Miller's classification and caused either an esthetic problem and/or root sensitivity. The symmetrical defects, on the maxillary canines, 4 mm or deeper, were randomly assigned in each patient to surgical procedures with either a bioresorbable matrix barrier (test) or a non-resorbable expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (control). A new method of attaching cast gold occlusal surfaces to acrylic resin denture teeth.

Historically, cast gold occlusal surfaces for complete or removable partial dentures have been fabricated with retentive loops or beads and luted to prepared denture teeth with acrylic resin or attached to tooth-colored, heat-processed acrylic resin. At present, alternatives to mechanical retention for attaching resin to metal include chemical bonding of the resin after placement of intermediate ceramic or tin layers and the use of chemically adhesive resin cements. Compared to mechanical retention, the chemical bonding of resin to metal requires less gold and allows more room for properly con

Evaluation of guided tissue regeneration in Class II furcation defects. A clinical re-entry study.

Twelve patients with two comparable furcation Class II lesions in lower molars were included in this study. After adequate presurgical preparation and pertinent clinical measurements, the areas were treated with full thickness flaps and thorough debridement and scaling and planing of the root surfaces. One of the defects was randomly selected to be covered with Gore-Tex periodontal material, held in place by sling sutures of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. On both sites the flaps were positioned slightly coronal to their original level and sutured. After 6 months both sites were re-entered s

Histological findings in post-extraction sockets after alveolar ridge preservation with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin: a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has gained considerable attention due to its regenerative potential and biocompatibility in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the histological findings in post-extraction sockets after ARP with L-PRF (experimental group) and compare them with those obtained using allograft plus a collagen membrane (control group). Histological findings may contribute to the evaluation of bone quality and the rate of bone remodelling. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-six sites in 26 patients requiring extraction of a single-rooted maxillary

Histologic comparison of healing after tooth extraction with ridge preservation using mineralized versus demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft.

BACKGROUND: Allografts, such as demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) and mineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) are commonly used by clinicians for ridge preservation procedures. The primary objective of this study is to histologically evaluate and compare the healing of non-molar extraction sockets grafted with DFDBA versus FDBA for ridge preservation. The secondary aim of this study is to compare dimensional changes in ridge height and width after grafting with these two materials. MATERIALS: Forty patients were randomly divided into two groups of 20. Extraction sockets

Management of fused supernumerary teeth in children using guided tissue regeneration: long-term follow up of 2 cases.

Surgical separation of supernumerary teeth fused to permanent incisor teethhas typically given rise to residual post surgical periodontal defects, induding loss of attachment and deep periodontal pocketing with persistent inflammation. Other complications include devitalisation of the retained tooth section, ankylosis, external and replacement resorption. A unique technique of using guided tissue regeneration has been successfully employed to promote periodontal healing, after 2 cases of surgical removal of a supernumerary tooth fused to a permanent maxillary lateral incisor tooth. In the firs

Tissue engineering with recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor BB for implant site development.

Currently, PDGF-BB is FDA-approved for periodontal regeneration as part of a dental bone-filling device only. Although this device uses beta-TCP as the scaffold carrier, there has been considerable clinical interest in combining this growth factor with other bone replacement grafts, particularly bone allografts. This article reports on clinical experiences using rhPDGF-BB with bone allografts for implant site development. After careful evaluation of clinical parameters and consideration of current and emerging evidence, the off-label use of rhPDGF-BB was determined in the following case report

A bioresorbable barrier in the treatment of gingival recession: description of a new resorbable dome device.

The biologic principle of guided tissue regeneration has been expanded to mucogingival surgery, using resorbable barrier membranes for the treatment of gingival recessions. Space provision is one of the main problems in non-space making defects, considering the softness of resorbable membranes. In this study, we tested the possibility to create and maintain a secluded space using a slow, long-lasting resorbable suture so that a resorbable dome device could support the barrier and immediately become a space-making device. Ten purely mucogingival recessions in ten patients were treated. At 12 mo

A novel approach revealing the effect of a collagenous membrane on osteoconduction in maxillary sinus floor elevation with β-tricalcium phosphate.

Calcium phosphates are used in maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) procedures to increase bone height prior to dental implant placement. Whether a collagenous barrier membrane coverage of the lateral window affects bone formation within a bone substitute augmentation is currently an important matter of debate, since its benefit has not been irrefutably proven. Therefore, in this clinical study twelve patients underwent an MSFE procedure with β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). The lateral window was either left uncovered, or covered with a resorbable collagenous barrier membrane. After a 6-mont

Comparison of autologous full-thickness gingiva and skin substitutes for wound healing.

Ideally tissue-engineered products should maintain the characteristics of the original tissue. For example, skin represents orthokeratinized epithelium and oral gingiva represents parakeratinized epithelium. The aim of this study was to develop an autologous full-thickness gingiva substitute suitable for clinical applications and to compare it with our autologous full-thickness skin substitute that is routinely used for healing chronic wounds. Autologous full-thickness skin and gingiva substitutes were constructed under identical culture conditions from 3-mm punch biopsies isolated from the up

Aesthetic and prosthetic principles for single tooth implant procedures: an overview.

Loss of anterior maxillary teeth always results in bone resorption and loss of interdental papillae, making a single tooth replacement by an implant very difficult. When infections have been present and previous surgery at the apex of the root has taken place, bone destruction is substantial, increasing the resorption defect and aesthetic and prosthetic problems. The learning objective of this article is to describe the steps necessary for implant surgery and prosthetics. It includes bone regeneration procedures, implant placement, second stage surgery, reconstruction of interdental papillae,
