Exposure to microgravity induces cardiovascular deconditioning characterized by orthostatic hypotension when astronauts return to the earth. In order to understand the mechanism of cardiovascular deconditioning, it is necessary to clarify the changes in hemodynamics and the cardiovascular regulation system over the period of space flight. The telemetry system applied to freely moving animals will be a useful and appropriate technique for this kind of long term study of the cardiovascular system in the conscious animal during space flight. The purpose of the present study is twofold: firstly, t

To examine otolith-governed ocular torsion in hyper- and hypogravity, eight subjects, including two astronauts, underwent parabolic flight while seated upright with head fixed. A mask fitted with two video cameras provided synchronized images of both eyes at a rate of 25/sec during 15 parabolas, the individual parabolas separated by a few minutes of level 1 G flight. Three main findings emerged: 1) After the first parabola, most subjects showed differential torsional offset of the two eyes in the 1 G portions between parabolas, compared to the conjugate baseline position of the eyes prior to t

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to clarify how muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans, which plays an important role in blood pressure control against gravity, is altered under microgravity (microG) conditions, and how the MSNA change is modified by breathing maneuvers. Ten subjects seated themselves in a jet aircraft with their knees extended. MSNA was recorded microneurographically from the left tibial nerve with simultaneous monitoring of ECG, blood pressure, respiration, and intrathoracic blood volume estimated by the impedance method during parabolic flight in a jet aircraft. Recent studies by Diamond and Markham have identified significant correlations between space motion sickness susceptibility and measures of disconjugate torsional eye movements recorded during parabolic flights. These results support an earlier proposal by von Baumgarten and Thumler which hypothesized that an asymmetry of otolith function between the two ears is the cause of space motion sickness. It may be possible to devise experiments that can be performed in the 1 g environment on earth that could identify and quantify the presence of asymmetric otolith function. This paper summarizes the

Extended periods of microgravity during orbital flights can impair astronauts' cognitive abilities, including learning and memory, posing a persistent health concern in the field of aerospace medicine. The study examined the pharmacological effects of agmatine and its influence on simulated neurobehavioral changes in rats under microgravity conditions. Rats were exposed to simulated microgravity (SMG) conditions using the hindlimb unloading (HU) model for 28 days and evaluated for behavioural alterations using the open field test, elevated plus maze, and forced swim test, and cognitive deficit

The long-term response of microbial communities to the microgravity environment of space is not yet fully understood. Of special interest is the possibility that members of these communities may acquire antibiotic resistance. In this study, Escherichia coli cells were grown under low-shear modeled microgravity (LSMMG) conditions for over 1,000 generations (1000G) using chloramphenicol treatment between cycles to prevent contamination. The results were compared with data from an earlier control study done under identical conditions using steam sterilization between cycles rather than chloramphe

PURPOSE: In microgravity, muscle atrophy occurs in the intrinsic muscles of the spine, with changes also observed in the abdominal muscles. Exercises are undertaken on the International Space Station and on Earth following space flight to remediate these effects. Similar effects have been seen on Earth in prolonged bed rest studies and in people with low back pain (LBP). The aim of this case report was to examine the effects of microgravity, exercise in microgravity and post-flight rehabilitation on the size of the multifidus and antero-lateral abdominal muscles.

The heart is subjected to chronic mechanical unloading during prolonged spaceflight and microgravity. The heart in patients with end-stage heart failure is also unloaded in prolonged duration after left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are implanted. Heterotopic heart transplantation in rats is an established model of chronic cardiac unloading, and has been used to investigate the effects of chronic cardiac unloading on the heart. Observations that have been found using this experimental model are as follow. Chronic cardiac unloading induces time-dependent depressions of Ca2+ handling and myo

Bone volume loss is one of the major health problems during long-term spaceflight. We examined the effects of vitamin K(2) on bone abnormalities in tail-suspended mature male Sprague-Dawley rats (13 weeks old). In this model, increased bone resorption and sustained suppression of bone formation resulted in progressive bone loss in 4 weeks, which simulates bone changes in humans during spaceflight. A significant decrease in bone mineral density (BMD), as well as a decreased mineral apposition rate (MAR), increased number of osteoclasts per bone perimeter (N.Oc/B.Pm), and increased osteoclast su

During the 1998 Neurolab mission (STS-90), four astronauts were exposed to interaural and head vertical (dorsoventral) linear accelerations of 0.5 g and 1 g during constant velocity rotation on a centrifuge, both on Earth and during orbital space flight. Subjects were oriented either left-ear-out or right-ear-out (Gy centrifugation), or lay supine along the centrifuge arm with their head off-axis (Gz centrifugation). Pre-flight centrifugation, producing linear accelerations of 0.5 g and 1 g along the Gy (interaural) axis, induced illusions of roll-tilt of 20 degrees and 34 degrees for gravito-

This study reports the effects of a 14-day spaceflight followed by a 14-day reambulation period on bones of 56-day-old male rats compared with synchronous (S) and vivarium (V) control animals. Femur, tibia, and humerus bone mineral densities (BMD); bone calcium and phosphorus concentrations ([Ca2+] and [P]), measured by X-ray microanalysis (XRM), on tibia, vertebra, and calvaria; and histomorphometric data on proximal primary and secondary spongiosae (I and II SP, respectively) of the tibia and humerus were measured. After the flight in flown rats (compared with S), BMD was lower in the distal

Future missions in space may involve long-term travel beyond the magnetic field of the Earth, subjecting astronauts to radiation hazards posed by solar flares and galactic cosmic rays, altered gravitation fields and physiological stress. Thus, it is critical to determine if there will be any reversible or irreversible, detrimental neurological effects from this prolonged exposure to space. A question of particular importance focuses on the long-term effects of the space environment on the central nervous system (CNS) neuroplasticity, with the potential acute and/or delayed effects that such pe

Three theories have been suggested as to the cause of space motion sickness: 1) eye and vestibular sensory mismatch, 2) abnormal shift of body fluids producing increased intracranial pressure and 3) pre-warning signals for unpleasant physical situations by self-produced neurotoxic substances released in the body. We are interested in the possible functional disabilities/incongruities of eye, head and body movements in 0-G. Space motion sickness might be explained from the viewpoint of lack of coordination of the movements of the eye and head. It is important to ascertain the significance of gr

The purpose of these experiments was to test the hypothesis that reduced size of the leg muscle compartment following exposure to long-duration microgravity would be associated with increased leg compliance. Eight men, 31-45 years of age, were measured for vascular compliance of the calf and serial circumferences of the thigh and calf before, during and after 30 d of continuous 6 degrees head-down bedrest. Cross-sectional areas (CSA) of muscle, fat, and bone compartments in the thigh and calf were determined pre- and post-bedrest by computed tomography. Calculated leg volumes decreased (p less
