An unusual case of lead snowstorm caused by fragmentation of buckshot.

This article reports the unusual radiographic findings of 2 cases of a shotgun shooting incident involving the homicide of a plant manager and the subsequent suicide of the assailant. "I was raped by the broker on the first day of my arrival in the town." Exploring reasons for risky sexual behavior among sexually-active unmarried young female internal migrants in Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Studies revealed that internal migrants are one of the most vulnerable groups for poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services. Risky sexual behavior (RSB) is a threat to public health and might lead to serious health problems such as unintended pregnancy, abortion, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS. The reported prevalence of RSB among young female internal migrants in Ethiopia was as high as 70.3%. This requires in-depth understanding of the underlying cause. So, this study aimed at exploring reasons for RSB among sexually-active

Horizontal hostility and verbal violence between nurses in the perinatal arena of health care.

The goal of this US study was to determine the frequency of horizontal violence in a perinatal service and its effect on patient outcomes. A 24-question survey instrument was completed online by 63 nurses. The results indicated that labour and delivery wards experience a higher frequency of horizontal violence than other units in the perinatal service. They also showed that the mother and baby unit demonstrates a higher frequency of recipient or victim behaviours. A relationship between horizontal violence and ineffective communication, as well as a relationship between horizontal violence and

Case-control study of student-perpetrated physical violence against educators.

PURPOSE: Although prior research focused primarily on student-on-student school violence, educators are also at risk. This study was designed to identify risk factors for assaults against educators. METHODS: Kindergarten-grade 12 educators (n = 26,000), randomly selected from a state license database, were screened for eligibility (6,469, eligible) by mailed questionnaire. Phase 1 (12-month recall) identified eligible assault cases (n = 372) and controls (n = 1,116), June 2004 to December 2005; phase 2 (case-control study; response, 78%) enabled identification of exposures through 1-month rec

Trauma-Related Symptomatology in Horizontal Nurse-to-Nurse Bullying: An Integrative Review of Direct and Indirect Exposure Pathways.

AIMS: This integrative review synthesized empirical and conceptual literature on horizontal nurse-to-nurse bullying and trauma-related symptomatology, with particular attention to how secondary traumatic stress has been theoretically conceptualized and operationalized in relation to direct versus indirect exposure pathways. METHODS: Guided by Whittemore and Knafl, an integrative review was conducted. Searches were completed on 6 May 2026 across three databases. Empirical and theoretical studies examining horizontal bullying and trauma-related symptoms in nurses were included. Methodological q

A Quality Improvement Pilot to Implement an Inpatient Opioid Withdrawal Screening Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Using quality improvement (QI) methods, we sought to improve the inpatient screening of opioid withdrawal symptoms using the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS), an industry validated instrument that is not widely used in the inpatient setting. By educating nurses and providers on the clinical manifestations of opioid withdrawal and implementing an evidence-based Opioid Withdrawal Screening Pathway, we sought to improve outcomes for those at risk for opioid withdrawal during hospitalization. METHODS: The pre-post test design using Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles involved two implemen

"Making a homeless person even more homeless … it's a necessary evil": The health and safety complexities of service restrictions as perceived by emergency shelter staff.

Service restrictions involve people experiencing homelessness being banned from an emergency shelter in response to a violation of program policies. Their use can be a pathway into unsheltered homelessness and reliance on other institutional services. However, the prevalence of service restriction use and the perspectives of shelter staff toward the practice are unknown. Accordingly, this mixed methods study used a one-phase QUAL(quan) embedded design to examine the reasons for implementing service restrictions, as recorded by shelter staff in administrative data and their perceptions of the p

Association of prior depressive symptoms and suicide attempts with subsequent victimization: analysis of population-based data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of mental disorder, particularly schizophrenia, predispose to victimization. Much less is known about the relationship between depressive symptoms and later victimization in the general population, the influence of these symptoms on types of subsequent victimization, or the role of symptom severity. We investigated this in nationally representative data from the United Kingdom. METHODS: Data were from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007. Multivariable logistic regressions estimated association between (a) prior depressive symptoms, (b) prior depressive symptoms wi

Commentary: The devastating effects of ignoring child maltreatment in psychiatry--a commentary on Teicher and Samson 2016.

Despite the numerous studies over the past 30 years that have clarified the devastating effects of child maltreatment on mental and physical health, the role of trauma within the caregiving system remains unrecognized both in our diagnostic systems and in our dominant treatment paradigms. Research of people with histories of caregiver abuse and neglect consistently demonstrates problems with concentration, anger, panic, depression, food intake, drugs, and sleep, as well as decreased Heart RateVariability, higher levels of stress hormones, and reduced or impaired immune response. Alcohol use among female sex workers and male clients: an integrative review of global literature.

AIMS: To review the patterns, contexts and impacts of alcohol use associated with commercial sex reported in the global literature. METHODS: We identified peer-reviewed English-language articles from 1980 to 2008 reporting alcohol consumption among female sex workers (FSWs) or male clients. We retrieved 70 articles describing 76 studies, in which 64 were quantitative (52 for FSWs, 12 for male clients) and 12 qualitative. RESULTS: Studies increased over the past three decades, with geographic concentration of the research in Asia and North America. Alcohol use was prevalent among FSWs and cli

Associations of multiple occupational exposures with major depressive and generalized anxiety disorders: Findings from the French National Working Conditions Survey.

BACKGROUND: There have been numerous studies on the associations between psychosocial work factors and mental health, but very few of them explored the cumulative effects of these factors. METHODS: The data came from the 2016 French National Working Conditions Survey based on a representative sample of 20,430 employees (8579 men and 11,851 women) aged 15-65 years. MDE and GAD wer
