Utilizing the concept of race-based traumatic stress, this study tested whether posttraumatic stress symptoms explain the process by which perceived discrimination is related to health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents. One hundred ten participants were recruited from a large health maintenance organization in Northern California. Mediational analyses indicated that adolescents who perceived more discrimination reported worse posttraumatic stress symptoms, controlling for covariates. In turn, adolescents who experienced heightened posttraumatic stress symptoms reported more alc

The author reports on a survey of 97 Hmong adult refugees in the United States. Thirty of these refugees showed symptoms of chronic maladjustment, and 13 showed another DSM-III axis I disorder; two manifested a paranoid psychosis, and six had a major depression. There were few axis II diagnoses. Medical conditions were frequent and often psychophysiological in nature, but they were not associated with axis I disorders. Axis IV psychosocial stressors were not associated with axis I diagnoses, but subjects with an axis I disorder tended to show lower adaptive levels on axis V. The demographic co

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking continues to be the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. Research suggests that behavioral support strategies and pharmacotherapy can improve abstinence rates. However, both approaches, especially pharmacotherapy, have been understudied in nonwhite US populations.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to evaluate the efficacy of smoking-cessation pharmacotherapy in nonwhite US populations.
METHODS: Using search terms smoking cessation, nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion SR, varenicline, minority, ethnicity, African Amer

The purpose of this study was to examine the sociocultural factors associated with health maintenance and health care seeking among Latina immigrants. Data were collected from eight focus groups with 54 Latina immigrants between the ages of 19 and 62 (M=29.3+/-9.34). The PEN-3 model provided the framework for the study. Most of the participants came from Mexico; 46% had not completed high school; 85.2% had been in the United States for less than 7 years, and 73.6% reported not having health insurance coverage. Participants identified both positive and negative perceptions, enablers, and nurtur

A community survey was conducted examining the differences in levels of psychological distress and its symptomatology, comparing 110 Ethiopian-Jewish and 400 Russian-Jewish immigrants to Israel. Psychological distress was measured by the Talbieh Brief Distress Inventory. Russian immigrants were found to be more distressed than their Ethiopian counterparts and this between-group difference can be attributed to the greater relative number of females, older immigrants and those with longer duration of stay in Israel in the Russian sample. The highest levels of distress were observed for paranoid

OBJECTIVE: The authors compared the personal histories, levels of psychological distress, and adaptation to American life of Vietnamese Amerasians (N=140), their non-Amerasian siblings (N=71), and a group of unrelated, like-aged Vietnamese immigrants (N=118).
METHOD: Subjects completed two self-administered symptom checklists and provided demographic and personal history data.
RESULTS: Vietnamese Amerasians differed significantly from the other two groups on measures of alcohol use, number of hospitalizations, years of education, childhood trauma, perceived effects of trauma, and score on th

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore how the military coup, COVID-19, and limited healthcare access affected the health and well-being of Myanmar migrants.
BACKGROUND: Myanmar is among the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. The combined effects of COVID-19, political instability, and civil conflict have created a humanitarian crisis, resulting in migrants having severely restricted access to food, water, healthcare, and basic rights.
DESIGN: A qualitative interview study.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 32 Myanmar migrants living in Thailand (M = 38.5 yea

BACKGROUND: Pregnant Mexican Americans (hereafter called Latinas) and Black/African American women are at increased risk for psychological distress, contributing to preterm birth and low birthweight; acculturative stress combined with perceived stress elevates depressive symptoms in Latinas. Based on our prior research using a psychoneuroimmunology framework, we identified psychological and neuroendocrine risk factors as predictors of preterm birth in Latina women that are also identified as risk factors for Black/African American women.
METHODS/DESIGN: In this prospective, randomized control

INTRODUCTION: At school, the migrant child has to face an intense symbolization that articulates the experience of migration, the family past and the availability of the school environment to accommodate beyond its primary mission of education. Migration is a potential source of trauma. This article aims to show the complexity of the processes involved in the psyche of the child and discusses aspects of latency as well as intercultural issues.
METHOD: The study was conducted on the psychological examination of a 7-year old migrant child that we met at school. The meetings took place because o

Immigrants in the U.S. often experience better health than the native-born, and many explanations for this phenomenon center around the positive health behaviors that immigrants bring from their home cultures. Immigrants from the former Soviet Union may be an exception; because they come from societies where unhealthy lifestyles and high mortality are common, they are often expected to experience worse health than the native population. Using data from the Integrated Health Interview Series, I compare FSU immigrants with U.S.-born, non-Hispanic whites on several health measures. FSU immigrants

The goal of this correlational study was to explore the relationship between Korean immigrant discipline (e.g., positive, appropriate, and harsh discipline) and children's social competence and behavior problems. Self-report data were collected from 58 mothers and 20 fathers of children aged from 3 to 8 years. Only paternal harsh discipline was positively correlated with children's behavior problems. Among specific discipline strategies, maternal physical affection, correcting misbehaviors, and reasoning were positively correlated with children's social competence. Paternal physical punishment

BACKGROUND: In Europe, only a limited number of cross-cultural comparative field studies or meta-analyses have been focused on the dynamics through which folk plant knowledge changes over space and time, while a few studies have contributed to the understanding of how plant uses change among newcomers. Nevertheless, ethnic minority groups and/or linguistic "isles" in Southern and Eastern Europe may provide wonderful arenas for understanding the various factors that influence changes in plant uses.
METHODS: A field ethnobotanical study was carried out in Mundimitar (Montemitro in Italian), a v

BACKGROUND: Childhood abuse is a major behavioral health concern and imposes lasting sequelae on mental and physical health, including lifetime substance use disorders (LT-SUD). Yet, gender-specific research examining this early trauma and substance use in Latina-Americans (Latinas) is scarce. No study has explored the relationship between collectivist cultural factors and LT-SUD in this largest minority-female subgroup of the United States' population.
OBJECTIVES: Based on coping theory, this study investigated the association between childhood abuse, cultural factors, and LT-SUD among Latin

The incidence of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders is very high among several ethnic minority groups in the Netherlands, and is most increased for Moroccans. This study compared symptoms at first treatment contact for a psychotic disorder between 117 native Dutch and 165 ethnic minority patients from Morocco, Surinam, Turkey, other non-Western countries and Western countries, using data from an incidence study for psychotic disorders over 4 years in The Hague, the Netherlands (1997-1999 and 2000-2002). Patients were examined using the Comprehensive Assessment of Symptoms and History

BACKGROUND: In 1998, the United States (US) implemented mandatory folic acid fortification of enriched cereal grain products (ECGP) to prevent neural tube defects (NTD) in newborns. NTD rates remained highest among Hispanic births. Voluntary fortification of corn masa flour was approved in 2016, without improvement in NTD rates. This review aims to understand folic acid consumption among Hispanic women in the US before and after voluntary fortification.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus from inception to September 2024 using the keywords folic acid, Hisp

BACKGROUND: Latinas are less likely to use genetic services (counseling and testing) for hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer risk compared to other ethnic groups. Meanwhile, little is known about barriers to genetic counseling among Latinas at increased risk of inherited breast cancer.
METHODS: A two-phase pilot study was conducted to examine interest, barriers and beliefs about BRCA genetic counseling among at-risk Latinas in New York City and explore the potential for developing a culturally-tailored narrative educational tool for use in future studies. Phase 1 included quantitative tel

BACKGROUND: PFAS are chemicals that are persistent in the environment. PFAS bioaccumulate and have been detected in human biospecimens, including children. Hispanic populations may be disproportionately vulnerable to PFAS exposure due to dietary and social factors.
OBJECTIVE: To identify dietary and social factors associated with PFAS concentrations in Hispanic children.
METHODS: We enrolled 110 Hispanic children (ages 4-11) in the Vidas Activas Familias Saludables (VALE) study. Parents completed questionnaires on diet and social factors, and children's anthropometrics and blood specimens we
