Anisakiasis: The Importance of Prevention and the Role of Diet Therapy in Allergic Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Anisakiasis is a zoonosis of parasitic origin whose diffusion seems to be continuously increasing. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of a fish-free diet in patients allergic to Anisakis simplex as well as underlining the importance of awareness and prevention. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate the critical issues related to the spread of anisakiasis in relation to eating habits. METHODS: Patients were assessed by means of skin prick tests (SPTs) and targeted laboratory testing, with an 18-month-long fish-free diet being recommended in cases of sev

A new species of Contracaecum (Nematoda: Anisakidae) found parasitizing Nannopterum brasilianus (Suliformes: Phalacrocoracidae) and Hoplias argentinensis (Characiformes: Erythrinidae) in South America: morphological and molecular characterization of larval and adult stages.

Nematode species of the genus Contracaecum Railliet & Henry, 1912 have been reported around the world in many species of fish-eating birds and seals. Here, Contracaecum jorgei n. sp. is morphologically described using light and scanning electron microscopy for adults and fourth-stage larvae (L4) found in the bird Nannopterum brasilianus and third-stage larvae (L3) found in the freshwater fish Hoplias argentinensis, both from the province of Córdoba, Argentina. Additionally, sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit II were obtained from these specimens and molecular phylogenetic analysis was u

Comparison of risk factors between human intestinal and gastric Anisakiasis.

BACKGROUND: Little is known in the difference of host factors between intestinal and gastric anisakiasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the associated factors of intestinal anisakiasis in patient's characteristics and the subsequent variation compared to gastric anisakiasis. METHODS: At St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, a retrospective cohort study was conducted from April 2004 to June 2017. All adult patients who were clinically diagnosed as anisakiasis based on Computed Tomography (CT) scan or endoscopy were included, and anti-Anisakis antibodies (IgG and IgA) we

[Small bowel obstruction caused by acute invasive enteric anisakiasis].

Anisakiasis usually occurs in the stomach and can easily be diagnosed by digestive tract endoscopy as opposed to enteric anisakiasis which is very rare and difficult to be diagnosed definitively. The most important and useful tool in diagnosing enteric anisakiasis is obtaining an accurate patient history of having eaten raw fish before the onset of symptoms. We report a case of small bowel obstruction caused by acute invasive enteric anisakiasis. A 60-year-old woman visited the emergency room suffering from sudden abdominal pain. She had eaten raw fish 1 day before the onset of symptom. Radiol

Identification of anisakid nematodes from the Southern Baltic Sea using PCR-based methods.

Four common species of Baltic anisakids Anisakis simplex, Hysterothylacium auctum, Contracaecum osculatum from fish (the last one also from the grey seal) and C. rudolphii from cormorants were examined using PCR-RFLP technique for working out the method allowing their identification and differentiation. A fragment of nuclear DNA containing intergenic regions (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA together with adjacent sequences of genes coding 18S and 28S rRNA (in total; approximately 1500 bp) was amplified and the products were digested using three endonucleases Hin fI, Hae III and Pvu II. Digestive anisakiasis: clinical manifestations and diagnosis according to localization.

OBJECTIVES: Digestive anisakiasis is a parasitic disease whose clinical manifestations depend on the effect of Anisakis simplex on the digestive tract wall. Larvae are acquired by eating raw or poorly cooked fish. It is estimated that this entity is currently under-diagnosed, although publications are becoming increasingly common. We analyse our series of digestive anisakiasis checking localization and studying its relationship with symptoms and method of diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We review 23 cases of digestive anisakiasis registered between 1989 and 2001, and confirmed by the measurem

Chronic anisakiasis presenting as a mesenteric mass.

Chronic anisakiasis is a rare entity, and its diagnosis is difficult. We report a case of chronic anisakiasis with multiple gastrointestinal manifestations presenting as a palpable mesenteric mass, diagnosed by specific serology and histologic findings. We describe the computed tomographic appearance of this mass and the pathologic correlations. To our knowledge, this is the first time this mesenteric location has been detected by imaging before surgery.

Update on occupational contact urticaria: a systematic narrative review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational contact urticaria (OCU) is an immediate-type skin reaction triggered by chemicals or proteins encountered in the workplace. It is classified as either nonimmunologic (irritant) or immunologic (IgE-mediated), which differ in pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, and clinical severity. Immunologic OCU may present with generalized urticaria and even anaphylaxis. We conducted a systematic narrative review to provide an updated overview of OCU, integrating findings from a structured literature search (2017-2025) with expert clinical interpretation. This review synthesiz

Molecular characterization of anisakid nematode larvae from 13 species of fish from Western Australia.

This study characterized anisakid nematodes in estuarine and near-shore species of fish in southern Western Australia. A total of 108 fish representing 13 species were examined for anisakid larvae. For the molecular characterization of anisakid larvae (n=218), we used PCR-coupled mutation scanning-sequencing-phylogenetic analyses of sequence variation in the internal transcribed spacers of nuclear ribosomal DNA. With the exception of Sillaginoides punctatus and Sillago schomburgkii, all the fish species examined (Aldrichetta forsteri, Arripis georgianus, Hyporhamphus regularis, Mugil cephalus,

MHC-mediated mate choice increases parasite resistance in salmon.

Natural (parasite-driven) and sexual selection are thought to maintain high polymorphism in the genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), but support for a link between mate choice, MHC variation and increased parasite resistance is circumstantial. We compared MHC diversity and Anisakis loads among anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) returning to four rivers to spawn, which had originated from natural spawning (parents allowed to mate freely) or artificial crosses (parents deprived from the potential benefits of mate choice). We found that the offspring of artificially bred

Metazoan parasites from odontocetes off New Zealand: new records.

Information about the parasite fauna of spectacled porpoises and cetaceans from New Zealand waters in general is scarce. This study takes advantage of material archived in collections of the Otago Museum in Dunedin and Massey University in Auckland, sampled from cetacean species found stranded along the New Zealand coastline between 2007 and 2014. Parasites from seven species of cetaceans (spectacled porpoise, Phocoena dioptrica (n = 2 individuals examined); pygmy sperm whale (n = 1); long-finned pilot whale, Globicephala melas (n = 1); Risso's dolphin, Grampus griseus (n = 1); short-beaked co

Immunological characteristics and localization of the Trichinella spiralis glutathione S-transferase.

Trichinella spiralis glutathione S-transferase (TsGST) was isolated from crude extracts of L1 larvae by glutathione-affinity chromatography. Two closely migrating polypeptides with molecular masses of 28.5 and 28 kDa were identified by electrophoresis. Three isoforms of pI 5.6, 5.8, and 6.0 were detected by isoelectric focusing. Purified TsGST showed a low transferase activity as measured with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene; glutathione peroxidase activity was also demonstrated using cumene hydroperoxide. A rabbit antiserum against TsGST reacted by western blot with crude extracts of Trichinella

Diagnóstico molecular de parasitosis intestinales.

Infections causes by parasites of the gastrointestinal tract are a global public health problem. In industrialised countries, their particular epidemiological (low general prevalence of enteroparasites), economic (high labour costs) and clinical characteristics (constant increase in the number of samples and diagnostic determinations to be performed) have led molecular techniques to progressively replace conventional microscopy as the first-line diagnostic method of these pathogens in modern clinical laboratories. PCR-based techniques, particularly those developed for the simultaneous detectio

DNA detection of Paragonimus westermani: Diagnostic validity of a new assay based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) combined with a lateral flow dipstick.

Paragonimus westermani (P. westermani) is widely spread in Asian countries and is one of the most important causative agents for lung fluke diseases. The prevention and control of Paragonimiaisis mainly depends on the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. In this study, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay targeted to a portion of the Ty3/gypsy-like LTR retrotransposon (Rn1) sequence coupled with a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) for the rapid detection of P. westermani-specific amplicons. The positive LAMP products were biotin-labeled and hybridized with a fluo

Human anisakiasis in Italy: a retrospective epidemiological study over two decades.

A retrospective analysis on human anisakiasis in Italy since its first description in 1996 was performed by conducting a literature search. Inclusion criteria based on the presence of a larva and on parasite identification were applied. Epidemiological data and clinical features were analysed. Particular attention was paid to the source of infection. In total, 73 cases were included in the analysis, while 34 were excluded. Cases were reported from eight Italian regions, most frequently Abruzzo, Apulia and Latium. The parasite was detected by endoscopy (51.4%) or laparotomy (48.6%). The site of

Atrial Fibrillation in Anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anaphylaxis and cardiovascular events has been reported in the past. While skin and respiratory symptoms are usually the most common and the first to appear, cardiovascular complications play a key role and represent the leading cause of death in anaphylaxis. METHODS: We report 3 episodes of atrial fibrillation triggered by anaphylaxis. Allergy and cardiology studies were performed. In both patients, the etiological agent was identified: Anisakis simplex hypersensitivity and food allergy. RESULTS: The heart is the source and target of chemical mediators r

[Severe segmental colitis due to anisakiasis. Unusual manifestation of a rare infection in Germany].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 43 years old worker of a fish factory was admitted for spasmodic lower abdominal pain lasting for some hours. Physical examination revealed diffuse abdominal tenderness with a maximum in the right upper and lower abdomen. INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory values showed a slight rise in leucocytes with otherwise normal inflammation parameters. In abdominal ultrasonography some free fluid in the gallbaldder region and an impressing thickening of the walls of the ascending and transverse colon were found. A CT scan described an "intraluminal process" and a pericolic inf

Anisakiasis in the western United States: four new case reports from California.

Four cases of transient anisakiasis in northern California acquired by ingestion of raw fish were reported to health authorities between May 1977 and June 1980. A single Phocanema decipiens-like 4th-stage (L4) larva was identified in each of two cases. A recently molted adult male P. decipiens with a fragment of attached L4 cuticle and prominent caudal papillae was recovered from a third person. The latter is the only human case known in which an anisakid worm developed to the adult stage was involved. Two Anisakis type I larvae were recovered in the fourth case, being the first parasitologica
