In order to help the hydro-agricultural projects in the management of water resources together with a schistosomiasis control programme, it is important to evaluate the extent of the problem. This is the reason why parasitological and clinical surveys were conducted in schools associated with malacological surveys in transmission sites of several water projects including the one from Sourou. The data-collecting for the research on molluscs was carried out in surface water and as for parasitologic investigations on school-aged children, urine filtration and Kato-Katz were used to evaluate the p

Severe schistosomiasis is a rare event in Venezuela nowadays, after a successful national campaign by the Schistosomiasis Control Program. Unfortunately, this program has practically disappeared, and snail surveillance in field is not a priority, anymore. Thus, schistosomiasis has become a neglected disease in this country. However, surveys in different populations from the endemic area have shown particular epidemiological features described herein. In five communities we evaluated 2,175 persons and searched for the presence of Biomphalaria glabrata snails. Some markers were used for classify

The aim of this study was to provide a preliminary assessment of morbidity due to schistosomiasis in the area of the future Adjarala Dam in Benin. We included 412 schoolchildren from five villages in the study. The mean age of the children was 9.4 +/- 2.3 years and the sex ratio (F/M) was 0.94. These children underwent parasitological examination. The children provided urine samples, which were examined by eye, filtered and tested for blood and protein. Stool samples were examined using Kato's technique and an ultrasound scan of the urinary tract was performed. We carried out a survey of snail

Malacological and parasitological surveys were made in Bole-Kotobe area in Addis Ababa in April 1996 to investigate the transmission of intestinal schistosomiasis. Malacological survey conducted in Kotobe river showed Schistosoma mansoni cercarial infection rate of 2.6% (one out of 38) in Biomphalaria pfeifferi. In a total of 197 stool specimens from school children examined using Kato thin smear method in Misrak Bar Number 1 and Wondirad Elementary and Junior Secondary Schools, the overall prevalence rate of Schistosomas mansoni was 4% and 10%, respectively while the intensity of infection wa

There is a continuous need for the development and evaluation of new, inexpensive but highly effective molluscides for the control of freshwater snails acting as intermediate hosts of schistomiasis. For this reason B-2 (Hokko Chemical Industry Co. Ltd, Japan), also called Phebrol (sodium 2,5-dichloro-4-bromophenol), was evaluated in our laboratory as a candidate molluscicide for the control of freshwater snails in South Africa. Bulinus africanus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni respectively, were exposed to different B-2 concentr

BACKGROUND: Heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) is widespread in several organisms playing a role in control of gene expression by heterochromatin formation and maintenance of silent chromatin. Schistosoma mansoni is a human parasite that is responsible for Schistosomiasis, a tropical neglected disease in the tropical and subtropical areas in the world, where the intermediate host Biomphalaria glabrata is present.
OBJECTIVES: In this study we attempted to investigate if the SmHP1 is enriched in S. mansoni chromatin in cercariae larvae stage, compared with another larvae stage sporocysts and its i

The transmission of Fasciola hepatica occurs only where there are -or recently were- aquatic or amphibious snails of the Lymnaeidae family, the intermediate host of this parasite. Direct detection of these snails is time-consuming and imprecise, hindering accurate and detailed mapping of transmission risk. To identify which microenvironmental factors could be used as proxies for the occurrence of the lymnaeid snail Galba viator, a major intermediate host in South America, a total of 183 1-m2 quadrants across diverse water bodies in an endemic area in Andean Patagonia were manually timed-search

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to describe the epidemiology of schistosomiasis 10 years after mass administration of praziquantel began in Sotuba, Mali.
METHODOLOGY/RESULTS: This observational cross-sectional survey in Sotuba, a periurban village in the Bamako district, took place from July to September 2010 and collected stool and urine samples from residents at least one year old. Kato-Katz (for stool) and urine filtration techniques were used to detect Schistosoma mansoni and S. hæmatobium eggs, respectively. Overall, 335 urine samples and 300 stool samples were examined. The environment, the on-going global climate change and the ecology of animal species determine the localisation of habitats and the geographical distribution of the various species in nature. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of such changes on snail species not only of interest to naturalists but also of importance to human and animal health. The spatial distribution of freshwater snail intermediate hosts involved in the transmission of schistosomiasis, fascioliasis and paramphistomiasis (i.e. Bulinus globosus, Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Lymnaea natalensis) were modelled by th

The objective of this study was to assess the potential of the snails Physa acuta and Melanoides tuberculata and the African catfish Clarias gariepinus as biological control agents against the Schistosoma mansoni intermediate host Biomphalaria pfeifferi under laboratory conditions. Groups of five target and five competitor snails were raised together in experimental aquaria and same number in separate aquaria as controls. Shell size, number of eggs and mortality rate were recorded for twelve consecutive weeks. The stocking density for C. gariepinus was one fish per aquarium. Fish were provided

Transmission of Schistosoma mansoni was monitored by routine snail sampling for Biomphalaria pfeifferi and by supplementary cercariometric measurements in 4 neighbouring study areas in Machakos District, Kenya. After 1 year, extensive, population-based chemotherapy with a single dose of praziquantel was given in 3 areas, but only minimal treatment in the fourth. In the year preceding treatment, seasonal transmission of S. mansoni and other non-human trematodes occurred in all 4 areas, despite some ecological differences and the effects of earlier treatment campaigns in 1 of the study areas. The global response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic involved intensified disinfection of public spaces, predominantly using 70% ethanol (EtOH) and bleach (sodium hypochlorite). However, the extensive application of these agents has raised concerns regarding their ecotoxicological impact on aquatic ecosystems, particularly following their entry into drainage systems where they can form hazardous disinfection by-products. This study assessed the acute toxicity of commercial 70% EtOH and bleach on two key freshwater species: the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia and the gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata. Th

The aim of this study was to conduct a large-scale freshwater snail survey in Benin to assess the malacological diversity and the larval trematode infections with a focus on Schistosoma genus. We conducted 82 freshwater snail surveys in 35 sites ranked in 4 types and belonging to 9 out of 12 departments. Among 19,200 collected snails, 11 species of freshwater snails were identified. Four species of human schistosome transmitting snails, Bulinus forskalii, B. globosus, B. truncatus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi and seven species of non-human schistosome transmitting snails. We investigated the genotypic composition of the digenetic parasite Schistosoma mansoni for its adult stages within the definitive host (the wild rat, Rattus rattus) and for the larval stages within the intermediate host (the snail, Biomphalaria glabrata) both collected at the same transmission site. Our analyses are based upon the recognition and distribution of 200 different multilocus genotypes generated by RAPD markers. While intramolluscan larval infrapopulations are characterized by a low infection rate (0.6 % on average) and low intra-host genetic diversity (1.1 genotype on average per

Plant molluscicicdes proved to be good means for controlling fresh water snails of schistosomiasis. The molluscicidal activities of the natural and lyophilized latex extracts of Euphorbia royleana and E. mouritanica and acetonitril and chloroform extracts of Jatropha carcus were investigated against Biomphalaria alexandrina the intermediate hosts for S. mansoni. The lyophilized latex extract of E. royleana showed the highest toxicity against snails with LC90 value of 11 ppm. While the natural latex extract of E. mouritanica showed the lowest toxicity against snails with LC90 value of 60 ppm. W

We conducted monthly snail captures in Bananal, State of São Paulo, Brazil, between March 1998 and February 2001, to identify Schistosoma mansoni vectors, estimate seasonal population changes, and delimit foci. We also evaluated the impact of improvements in city water supply and basic sanitation facilities. We identified 28,651 vector specimens, 28,438 as Biomphalaria tenagophila, 49 of them (0.2%) infected with S. mansoni, and 213 as B. straminea, none of the latter infected. Vectors predominated in water bodies having some vegetation along their banks. Neither population density nor local v

Persons employed as vehicle washers in the town of Kisumu, Kenya are exposed for several hours each day to water in Lake Victoria that contains Schistosoma mansoni-infected Biomphalaria pherifferi snails. This results in a focus of high endemicity for schistosomiasis and these persons have very high concentrations of eggs in their feces (mean +/- SD = 1,469 +/- 1,581 eggs per gram [EPG] of feces). Fecal egg counts, but not circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) levels, in these schistosomiasis patients differed strikingly based on the patient's seropositivity for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

The geographical range of schistosomiasis is affected by the ecology of schistosome parasites and their obligate host snails, including their response to temperature. Previous models predicted schistosomiasis' thermal optimum at 21.7°C, which is not compatible with the temperature in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regions where schistosomiasis is hyperendemic. We performed an extensive literature search for empirical data on the effect of temperature on physiological and epidemiological parameters regulating the free-living stages of S. mansoni and S. haematobium and their obligate host snails, i.e.

The detection of specific DNA sequences by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has proved extremely valuable for the analysis of genetic disorders and the diagnosis of a variety of infectious disease pathogens. However, the application to the detection of Schistosoma mansoni is rare, despite a recommendation of the World Health Organization that a major focus of research on schistosomiasis should be on the development and evaluation of new strategies and tools for control of the disease. In this context, a few studies were published for the detection of the parasite in snails, monitoring of cercar
