Feingold syndrome (FS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by microcephaly, short stature, digital anomalies, esophageal/duodenal atresia, facial dysmorphism, and various learning disabilities. Heterozygous deletion of the miR-17-92 cluster is responsible for a subset of FS (Feingold syndrome type 2, FS2), and the developmental abnormalities that characterize this disorder are partially recapitulated in mice that harbor a heterozygous deletion of this cluster (miR-17-92∆/+ mice). Although Feingold patients develop a wide array of learning disabilities, no scientific description of

BACKGROUND: In clinical medicine, ferritin is predominantly utilized as a serum marker of total body iron stores. In cases of iron deficiency and overload, serum ferritin serves a critical role in both diagnosis and management. Elevated serum and tissue ferritin are linked to coronary artery disease, malignancy, and poor outcomes following stem cell transplantation. Ferritin is directly implicated in less common but potentially devastating human diseases including sideroblastic anemias, neurodegenerative disorders, and hemophagocytic syndrome.
METHOD: We report a case of congenital hyperferri

Research on muscle dysmorphia (MD), currently conceptualized as a clinical specifier for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), is rapidly expanding. Although personality traits and disorders have been proposed as relevant risk factors for the development of BDD, their role in MD remains insufficiently understood. This scoping review aims to synthesize the existing empirical literature on the associations between MD and personality, while identifying key research gaps and clinical challenges. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PsycArticles, PubMed, Scopus, W

Tall stature is not a common motive for medical consultation, even though by definition 2.5 % of children in the general population are concerned. It is usually defined as height greater than+2 standard deviations (SD) using the appropriate growth chart for age and gender, or a difference greater than +2 SD between actual height and target height. With a patient presenting tall stature, the physician has to determine whether it is a benign feature or a disease. Indeed, making the diagnosis is essential for hormonal disease or genetic overgrowth syndromes. The past medical history including par

BACKGROUND: To date, the vast majority of research on disordered eating symptomatology and body image disturbances from the Arab world have been performed exclusively among women; and mainly used thinness-oriented measures that are not sensitive to detect muscularity-oriented symptoms, which are more evident in males. Therefore, the objective of our study was to validate the Arabic version of the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (Ar-MDDI), in order to make it accessible for Arabic-speaking populations.
METHODS: Using a snowball sampling technique, men university students (n = 396) from mu

BACKGROUND: Kaufman oculocerebrofacial syndrome (KOS; OMIM #244450)is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic biallelic variants in UBE3B, characterized by craniofacial dysmorphism, global developmental delay, hypotonia, and multisystem anomalies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 12-month-old Jordanian girl born to consanguineous parents, who exhibited microcephaly, hypotonia, feeding difficulties, and failure to thrive. Echocardiography revealed a mild basal septal hypertrophy. Developmental evaluation confirmed moderate global delay. Whole-exome sequencing revealed a homozy

BACKGROUND: Seckel syndrome is a rare genetic disorder with autosomal recessive inheritance. It is characterized by dysmorphic features, intrauterine and postnatal growth restriction, microcephaly and mental retardation. Although cardiovascular complications are not prevalent in this syndrome, severe sinus bradycardia, hypertension and brain vasculopathy are reported. Here, for the first time, we describe a case of lower extremity arterial occlusion in a case of Seckel syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old girl with the characteristic features of Seckel syndrome was admitted to the child

We describe a boy and his father with the chorioretinal dysplasia-microcephaly-mental retardation syndrome (CDMMS). Our report extends the phenotypic spectrum of autosomal dominant CDMMS by describing microphthalmia for the first time in an autosomal dominant family. The boy was also severely mentally retarded in contrast to the usual mild mental retardation in AD-CDMMS. Furthermore he had hypertonia, dysmorphic features and low body weight, which are uncommon in AD-CDMMS. CDMMS is a rare disorder. We traced 18 reports on CDMMS including 10 families, 6 with horizontal transmission and 4 with v

NGLY1-related disorder is a newly described autosomal recessive condition characterized by neurological, hepatic, ophthalmological findings and associated with dysmorphic features, constipation and scoliosis. It is caused by mutations in NGLY1, which encodes an enzyme, N-glycanase 1, involved in deglycosylation of glycoproteins, an essential step in the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway. The disorder has been described in eight patients. We investigated the molecular basis and phenotype of NGLY1-related disorder in an additional patient. The proband is a 14-year-old w

Own-perceived body matching - the ability to match one's own body with an observed body - is a difficult task for both general and clinical populations. Thus far, however, own-perceived body matching has been investigated in situations that are incongruent with how we are used to experience and perceive our body in daily life. In the current study, we aimed to examine own-perceived body matching in a context that more closely resembles real life. More specifically, we investigated the effects of body movement dynamics and clothing cues on own-perceived body matching. We asked participants to m

BACKGROUND: Effective biomarkers of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) response provide information beyond available behavioral or self-report measures and may optimize treatment selection for patients based on likelihood of benefit. No single biomarker reliably predicts CBT response. In this study, we evaluated patterns of brain connectivity associated with self-focused attention (SFA) as biomarkers of CBT response for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. We hypothesized that pre-treatment as well as pre-to post-treatment changes in functional connectivity would be associated with impr

Cognitive inflexibility is suggested by the hallmark symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), namely the occurrence of repetitive thoughts and/or behaviours that persist despite being functionally impairing and egodystonic to the individual. As well as being implied by the top-level symptoms, cognitive inflexibility in OCD, and some related conditions, has also been objectively quantified in case-control studies using computerised cognitive tasks. This chapter begins by considering the objective measurement of different aspects of cognitive flexibility using neuropsychological paradigm

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have aimed to identify subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) based on their age of onset (AOO). Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCS disorders) such as tic disorders have been particularly associated with an early onset in some studies. However, subtypes of early- and late-onset OCD are unevenly determined, and the biological and the clinical validity of these subtypes are unknown. This study was undertaken to discriminate the subtypes of OCD in different AOO levels and to test the hypothesis that different AOO bands are associated with a differen

INTRODUCTION: Costello syndrome (CS) is a multisystemic disorder characterized by postnatal reduced growth, facial dysmorphism, cardiac defects, cognitive impairment, skin and musculo-skeletal anomalies, and predisposition to certain cancers. CS is caused by activating germline mutations in the HRAS proto-oncogene. Similar to what is observed in other RASopathies, CS causative HRAS mutations promote enhanced signal flow through the RAF-MEK-ERK and PI3K-AKT signaling cascades. While decreased bone mineralization has been documented in other RASopathies, such as neurofibromatosis type 1 and Noon

This case report aims to alert physicians to neuropsychological features and chromosomal variants that may underly resistant hypertension. We present a 35-year-old female patient with hypertensive crisis (BP 260/160 mmHg), initially treated with a combination of calcium antagonists, beta blockers, diuretics and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitors, though with little improvement. Cushing's syndrome, Conn's syndrome, and glucocorticoid receptor deficiency were ruled out. Multidisciplinary examination of medical history and (hetero)anamneses including psychosocial factors revealed mild

Cutis laxa is a rare connective tissue disorder characterized by redundant and pendulous skin due to a defect in the elastic fiber network. Two cases of entropion associated with cutis laxa have been reported, although entropion was due to elongation of the anterior lamella or horizontal lid laxity. Thorough systemic and ophthalmic evaluations were performed, as well as chart review for the perinatal period. Surgical correction of entropion through posterior tarsotomy was done. An infant boy with dysmorphic features and furrowing of the skin of the entire body without hyperelasticity, which is

OBJECTIVE: Mevalonic aciduria is a consequence of the deficiency of mevalonate kinase, the first enzyme after 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase in the biosynthesis of cholesterol and nonsterol isoprenes. To establish the clinical and biochemical phenotype of mevalonic aciduria, the authors assembled their experience with 11 patients including attempts at therapeutic interventions.
METHODS: Mevalonic acid in body fluids was determined by stable isotope dilution gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy with selected ion monitoring, ubiquinone-10 concentrations by reversed-phase high-p

Fetal growth is a complex process involving environmental, epigenetic and genetic factors. Fetal growth restriction is associated with morbidity among small for gestational age (SGA) neonates as well as in children and adults who were former SGA. Imprinted genes (whose expression is restricted to a single parental allele) have a critical role in controlling mammalian fetal growth. The human chromosome 11p15 encompasses two imprinted domains regulated by their own differentially methylated imprinted control region (ICR1 at the H19/IGF2 domain, and ICR2 at the KCNQ1/CDKN1C domain). Loss of impri

INTRODUCTION: Most men seeking penile enhancement techniques have a normal penile size. They are either misinformed or suffer from penile dysmorphophobia and should be discouraged from undergoing invasive procedures. Less invasive techniques including penile extenders are not associated with major complications and may be beneficial from a psychological perspective.
AIM: We conducted this study to assess the efficacy and safety of AndroPenis (Andromedical, Madrid, Spain) penile extender.
METHODS: Between December 2010 and December 2013, 163 men presented to our institution complaining of sma
