Pituitary estrogen receptor alpha is involved in luteinizing hormone pulsatility at mid-gestation in the South American plains vizcacha, Lagostomus maximus (Rodentia, Caviomorpha).

The South American plains vizcacha, Lagostomus maximus, is a caviomorph rodent native from Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. It shows peculiar reproductive features like pre-ovulatory follicle recruitment during pregnancy with an ovulatory process at around mid-gestation. We have described the activation of the hypothalamic - pituitary - ovarian (HPO) axis during pregnancy. A progressive decrease of progesterone (P4) at mid-pregnancy elicits the delivery of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) with the consequent secretion of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol (E2) followed by lu

Relationship of sanitation, water boiling, and mosquito nets to health biomarkers in a rural subsistence population.

OBJECTIVES: Throughout human evolutionary history, parasites and pathogens were a major cause of mortality-modern urban life with public health infrastructure has changed disease exposure. We examine associations between boiling water, using latrines, mosquito net usage, and biomarkers among the Tsimane, a nonindustrial subsistence population with little public health infrastructure. METHODS: We conducted cross sectional surveys on water, latrines, and bed nets among 507 heads of households (aged 18-92 years, median age 41 years). Regression models estimated associations between behaviors and

Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Vascular Function in Patients With Chronic Mountain Sickness and Healthy High-Altitude Dwellers.

BACKGROUND: Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) is often associated with vascular dysfunction, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) frequently occurs at high altitude. At low altitude, SDB causes vascular dysfunction. Moreover, in SDB, transient elevations of right-sided cardiac pressure may cause right-to-left shunting in the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) and, in turn, further aggravate hypoxemia and pulmonary hypertension. We speculated that SDB and nocturnal hypoxemia are more pronounced in patients with CMS compared with healthy high-altitude dwe

Comparative infectivity of Fasciola hepatica metacercariae from isolates of the main and secondary reservoir animal host species in the Bolivian Altiplano high human endemic region.

Fascioliasis due to Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus, 1758) is an endemic disease on the Northern Bolivian Altiplano, where human prevalences and intensities are the highest known, sheep and cattle are the main reservoir hosts, and pigs and donkeys the secondary ones. Investigations were carried out to study the viability of metacercariae experimentally obtained from eggs shed by naturally infected Altiplanic sheep, cattle, pigs and donkeys. A total of 157 Wistar rats were infected with doses of 5, 10, 20 and 150 metacercariae. Metacercariae aged for different number of weeks were used to analyse t

Effects of coca chewing on metabolic and hormonal changes during graded incremental exercise to maximum.

We examined the effects of 1 h of coca chewing on metabolic and hormonal responses during incremental exercise to exhaustion in traditional coca chewers (C; n = 8), and the results were compared with a group of nonchewers (n = 13). For 1 h, C chewed approximately 12 g of coca leaves that resulted in the apparition of cocaine in blood that reached 72 +/- 9 ng/ml. In resting conditions, even though sympathoadrenergic activity (as assessed by norepinephrine and epinephrine plasma levels) was similar in both groups, C displayed a higher level of plasma free fatty acids. Oxygen uptake measured at e

Real-world implementation and clinical outcomes of a regional prenatal screening programme for Trypanosoma cruzi infection in a non-endemic European setting: an 11-year retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In non-endemic countries, congenital transmission has become the main source of new Trypanosoma cruzi infections. Prenatal screening programmes targeting women from endemic areas are recommended, yet long-term real-world evaluations in Europe remain limited. We assessed the implementation of a regional prenatal screening programme and the association between maternal T. cruzi infection and maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: We conducted an 11-year retrospective cohort study (2014-2024) at a tertiary hospital in Valencia, Spain. All pregnancies in women born in endemic countr

The global prevalence of human fascioliasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a parasitic zoonosis that can infect humans and be a source of significant morbidity. The World Health Organization lists human fascioliasis as a neglected tropical disease, but the worldwide prevalence of fascioliasis data is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the global prevalence of human fascioliasis. DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review and prevalence meta-analysis. We used the following inclusion criteria: articles published in the English, Portuguese, or Spanish languages from December 1985 to October 2022 and studies assessing t

Health need assessment in an indigenous high-altitude population living on an island in Lake Titicaca, Perú.

BACKGROUND: Health needs and access to health care is a huge challenge in developing countries, especially in some isolated indigenous communities. Amantani is an island located at 3854 m above sea level in Lake Titicaca, Peru. There is no official date on key local health needs and determinants, which precludes the prioritization and efficient implementation of health interventions. The objective of this study is to validate a health need assessment tool and ascertain the main health needs of the indigenous high-altitude population living on Amantani. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional

Arboviral etiologies of acute febrile illnesses in Western South America, 2000-2007.

BACKGROUND: Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are among the most common agents of human febrile illness worldwide and the most important emerging pathogens, causing multiple notable epidemics of human disease over recent decades. Despite the public health relevance, little is know about the geographic distribution, relative impact, and risk factors for arbovirus infection in many regions of the world. Our objectives were to describe the arboviruses associated with acute undifferentiated febrile illness in participating clinics in four countries in South America and to provide detailed epid

The forsaken mental health of the Indigenous Peoples - a moral case of outrageous exclusion in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is neglected in most parts of the world. For the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America, the plight is even more severe as there are no specific mental health services designed for them altogether. Given the high importance of mental health for general health, the status quo is unacceptable. Lack of research on the subject of Indigenous Peoples' mental health means that statistics are virtually unavailable. To illustrate their mental health status, one can nonetheless point to the high rates of poverty and extreme poverty in their communities, overcrowded housing, illite

Understanding machupo virus: A neglected arenavirus with global health importance.

Machupo virus (MACV), classified within the Mammarenavirus genus of the Arenaviridae family, serves as the causative agent of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (BHF), a life-threatening zoonosis primarily confined to rural regions of Bolivia's Beni Department. First identified in 1959 during epidemics in San Joaquín, this bisegmented, ambisense, single-stranded RNA virus exhibits 20%-35% case-fatality rates, with highest lethality among children under 5 and adults over 55. The vesper mouse (Calomys callosus) acts as the principal reservoir, sustaining lifelong asymptomatic infections and shedding vir

Population Genetics of the Greater Grison (Galictis vittata; Mustelidae, Carnivora) and How Changes Since Miocene-Pliocene Have Shaped the Phylogenetic Relationships Between Grison Species and Other Neotropical Mustelid Genera.

Mustelids are a very diverse carnivoran group, boasting the largest number of carnivoran species today, with the most extreme ecological adaptations. Nevertheless, Neotropical Lyncodontini, one Neotropical mustelid subfamily, is one of the least studied from a genetic and evolutionary perspective. The use of small fragments of three mitochondrial (mt) markers (NADH5, 12S rRNA, and D-loop) proved to be very useful for recovering relevant information on the evolutionary history of Neotropical Lyncodontini species of the genera Galictis and Lyncodon. This study used the largest population sample

Historical overview and update on relapsing fever group Borrelia in Latin America.

Relapsing fever group Borrelia (RFGB) are motile spirochetes transmitted to mammalian or avian hosts through the bite of hematophagous arthropods, such as soft ticks (Argasidae), hard ticks (Ixodidae) and the human clothing lice. RFGB can infect pets such as dogs and cats, as well as birds, cattle and humans. Borrelia recurrentis, B. anserina and B. theileri are considered to have worldwide distribution, affecting humans, domestic birds and ruminants, respectively. Borrelia spp. associated with soft ticks are transmitted mainly by Ornithodoros ticks and thrive in endemic foci in tropical and s

Progress towards eliminating canine rabies: policies and perspectives from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Human rabies transmitted by dogs is considered a neglected disease that can be eliminated in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) by 2015. The aim of this paper is to discuss canine rabies policies and projections for LAC regarding current strategies for achieving this target and to critically review the political, economic and geographical factors related to the successful elimination of this deadly disease in the context of the difficulties and challenges of the region. The strong political and technical commitment to control rabies in LAC in the 1980s, started with the regional programme c

Circulating extracellular vesicles in sera of chronic patients as a method for determining active parasitism in Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, once restricted mainly to the Americas, Chagas disease has become a global health problem due to migration from endemic to non-endemic areas. In non-endemic regions, transmission is limited to vertical transmission from infected mothers to newborns or through blood and organ donations. A major challenge in the management of the disease lies in the diagnosis of chronic cases, as blood-borne parasites are often absent and antibodies persist for life, complicating the evaluation of treatment. METHODOLOGY AND MAIN FINDINGS: This study investigates whether detection of

Primary oral mucosal melanoma: a series of 35 new cases from South America.

Oral mucosal melanoma is rare and reported to be more aggressive than its cutaneous counterpart. Due to the rarity of this entity, data on epidemiology, tumor behavior, treatment, follow-up, and survival of patients are mainly based on single case reports. The few existing series of patients show that oral mucosa melanoma has its peak between 41 and 60 years of age, and male to female ratio is 2:1. Preferred oral sites include hard palate and maxillary alveolar crests. Risk factors have not been clearly identified, and surgical treatment is still the treatment of choice for oral mucosal melano

Burden of disease due to amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, and opioid use disorders in South America, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: South America's substance use profile, poverty, income inequality, and cocaine-supplier role make it a unique place for substance use research. This study investigated the burden of disease attributable to amphetamine use disorder, cannabis use disorder (CAD), cocaine use disorder, and opioid use disorder (OUD) in South America from 1990 to 2019, on the basis of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Muscle tissue adaptations to hypoxia.

This review reports on the effects of hypoxia on human skeletal muscle tissue. It was hypothesized in early reports that chronic hypoxia, as the main physiological stress during exposure to altitude, per se might positively affect muscle oxidative capacity and capillarity. However, it is now established that sustained exposure to severe hypoxia has detrimental effects on muscle structure. Short-term effects on skeletal muscle structure can readily be observed after 2 months of acute exposure of lowlanders to severe hypoxia, e.g. during typical mountaineering expeditions to the Himalayas. The f
