Plasticity in the tonotopic organization of the medial geniculate body in adult cats following restricted unilateral cochlear lesions.

To investigate subcortical contributions to cortical reorganization, the frequency organization of the ventral nucleus of the medial geniculate body (MGv) in six normal adult cats and in eight cats with restricted unilateral cochlear lesions was investigated using multiunit electrophysiological recording techniques. The tonotopic organization of MGv in the lesioned animals, with severe mid-to-high frequency hearing losses, was investigated 40-186 days following the lesioning procedure. Frequency maps were generated from neural responses to pure tone bursts presented separately to each ear unde

SPET monitoring of auditory cortex activation by electric stimulation in a patient with auditory brainstem implant.

Auditory cortex activation following multifrequency acoustic stimulation has been evaluated by means of single photon emission tomography (SPET) in one patient before and after an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). No activation could be observed after acoustic stimulation before ABI. After ABI stimulation in the coronal and axial slices, the activation within the temporal cortex contralateral to the stimulated ear was twice (43.76%) that of normal controls (23.94 +/- 2.74%). This marked difference was not present in other selected cortical auditory areas (homolateral temporal, homolateral and

Effects of interaural intensity difference on the processing of interaural time difference in the owl's nucleus laminaris.

Interaural time and intensity differences (ITD and IID) are processed independently in the owl's auditory system. This paper examines whether this independence is established in nucleus laminaris (NL), the first site of ITD processing. A plot of discharge rate against time difference (ITD curve) is sinusoidal in NL. The ITDs that produce the peaks are called the most favorable ITDs, and those that produce the troughs are called the least favorable ITDs. IID had little effect on the discharge rates of laminaris neurons for the most and least favorable ITDs. The degree of peak-trough modulation

Age-related changes in androgen receptor levels in cranial nerve nuclei of male rats.

Sensory and motor events are important for mating, and several cranial nerve nuclei mediating these events contain androgen receptors (AR). Since mating behavior declines with age, we tested whether AR binding is decreased in cranial nerve nuclei of old male rats. Cytosol and cell nuclear androgen receptor (AR) binding was assessed in the cochlear, hypoglossal and facial nuclei in young (4 months) and old (20 months) male Fischer 344 rats. For comparison with other neural and non-neural tissue, AR binding in combined hypothalamus, preoptic area and amygdala (HPA), and muscle tissue from tongue

Predictive value of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in children with post-traumatic coma produced by diffuse brain injury.

In the present study, brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in 31 children in post-traumatic coma with diffuse brain injury were examined. The BAEPs were recorded in the first 72 h after hospital admission and the findings of 29 patients related to the level of neurological recovery at 6 months after head injury. On the basis of the results, children were divided into three groups: the first consisted of children with bilateral and normal BAEPs (n = 19); the second of those with asymmetrical BAEPs (n = 6); and the third of those in whom BAEPs has disappeared or in whom only responses o

Glycinergic mIPSCs in mouse and rat brainstem auditory nuclei: modulation by ruthenium red and the role of calcium stores.

Spontaneous miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) recorded in central neurons are usually highly variable in amplitude due to many factors such as intrinsic postsynaptic channel fluctuations at each release site, site-to-site variability between release sites, electrotonic attenuation due to variable dendritic locations of synapses, and the possibility of synchronous multivesicular release. A detailed knowledge of these factors is essential for the interpretation of mIPSC amplitude distributions and mean quantal size. We have studied glycinergic mIPSCs in two auditory brainstem n

Perinatal maturation of the auditory brain stem response: changes in path length and conduction velocity.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to correlate developmental data on brain stem auditory path length with data on auditory brain stem response (ABR) conduction time. This was done to estimate changing axonal conduction velocity during the perinatal period. DESIGN: Pathway length was determined by three-dimensional reconstruction of postmortem fetal and infant brain stems in an AutoCAD system. Brain stem conduction time was obtained from previous ABR studies of premature, term, and post-term infants. The process of correlation of path length and conduction time was based on a model of ABR

Does Auditory Environment Predict Speech Perception Outcomes in Elderly Cochlear Implant Patients?

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) is a reliable and safe means by which sensorineural hearing loss can be ameliorated in the elderly population. However, a high degree of variation exists in postimplantation hearing outcomes for which some modifiable factors of the daily natural auditory environment may be contributory. In this study, we analyze the relationship between cochlear implant patient age, natural auditory environment, and postimplantation speech perception among older adults. METHODS: Data log from automatic environment classification enabled sound processors of postlinguall

Olivocochlear efferents: Their action, effects, measurement and uses, and the impact of the new conception of cochlear mechanical responses.

The anatomy and physiology of olivocochlear (OC) efferents are reviewed. To help interpret these, recent advances in cochlear mechanics are also reviewed. Lateral OC (LOC) efferents innervate primary auditory-nerve (AN) fiber dendrites. The most important LOC function may be to reduce auditory neuropathy. Medial OC (MOC) efferents innervate the outer hair cells (OHCs) and act to turn down the gain of cochlear amplification. Cochlear amplification had been thought to act only through basilar membrane (BM) motion, but recent reports show that motion near the reticular lamina (RL) is amplified mo

Prolonged sound exposure has different effects on increasing neuronal size in the auditory cortex and brainstem.

Tone at moderate levels presented to young rats at a stage (postnatal week-4) presumably that has passed the cortical critical period still can enlarge neurons in the auditory cortex. It remains unclear whether this delayed plastic change occurs only in the cortex, or reflects a change taking place in the auditory brainstem. Here we compared sound-exposure effects on neuronal size in the auditory cortex and the midbrain. Starting from postnatal day 22, young rats were exposed to a low-frequency tone (4 kHz at 65 dB SPL) for a period of 3 (postnatal day 22-25) or 7 (postnatal day 22-29) days be

Click-evoked responses from the exposed intracranial portion of the eighth nerve during vestibular nerve section: bipolar and monopolar recordings.

We compare the click-evoked compound action potentials from the exposed intracranial portion of the eighth nerve using bipolar and monopolar recording electrodes in patients undergoing vestibular nerve section. It is assumed that a bipolar recording electrode will only record propagated neural activity in the auditory nerve, whereas a monopolar recording electrode may in addition record electrical activity that is conducted passively to the recording site. The results of the present study confirm that the earliest detectable propagated neural activity in the intracranial portion of the auditor

Transient appearance of calbindin-D28k-positive neurons in the superior olivary complex of developing rats.

Calbindin-D28k (CaBP) is a calcium-binding protein that is prominent in various parts of the mammalian auditory system. In order to shed some light on the possible role of CaBP during ontogeny, when calcium ions play key roles in several processes, the location of CaBP was examined immunocytochemically in the auditory system of the developing rat. This study focuses on the principal nuclei of the superior olivary complex, which show distinct CaBP labeling in the adult. Consistent with previous reports in the rat and other mammals, CaBP immunoreactivity in adults was intense in somata of the me

Functional and Neuropathological Evidence for a Role of the Brainstem in Autism.

The brainstem includes many nuclei and fiber tracts that mediate a wide range of functions. Data from two parallel approaches to the study of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) implicate many brainstem structures. The first approach is to identify the functions affected in ASD and then trace the neural systems mediating those functions. While not included as core symptoms, three areas of function are frequently impaired in ASD: (1) Motor control both of the limbs and body and the control of eye movements; (2) Sensory information processing in vestibular and auditory systems; (3) Control of affec

Early Onset Region and Cell Specific Alterations of Doublecortin Expression in the CNS of Animals with Sound Damage Induced Hearing Loss.

Sound damage induced hearing loss has been shown to elicit changes in auditory and non-auditory brain regions. A protein critical for neuronal migration and brain development, doublecortin (DCX), has been used as a marker of central nervous system (CNS) neuroplasticity. DCX is expressed in unipolar brush cells (UBCs) of the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), cerebellar parafloccular lobe (PFL) and neuronal precursor cells in the sub-granular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). Sound damage induced hearing loss has been shown to differentially impact DCX expression months later. To identify

Thin-film micro-electrode stimulation of the cochlea in rats exposed to aminoglycoside induced hearing loss.

The multi-channel cochlear implant (CI) provides sound and speech perception to thousands of individuals who would otherwise be deaf. Broad activation of auditory nerve fibres when using a CI results in poor frequency discrimination. The CI also provides users with poor amplitude perception due to elicitation of a narrow dynamic range. Provision of more discrete frequency perception and a greater control over amplitude may allow users to better distinguish speech in noise and to segregate sound sources. In this research, thin-film (TF) high density micro-electrode arrays and conventional plati
