[CLAVICLE FRACTURES IN CHILDREN--CIRCUMSTANCES AND CAUSES OF INJURY].

Clavicle fractures in children occur twice as often as in adults. During a child's growth period they account for 10-15% of all fractures sustained. The questions which should be asked are how these fractures are sustained and under which circumstances are the children injured. In the study 256 children with clavicle fractures treated during the period 2008-2013 were analyzed. The underlying cause and place of injuries were classified using the ICD-10 classification system, using environmental causes of injury. The circumstances were in each case accidental injury. Environmental causes were tr

Traumatic spinal cord injuries in horseback riding: a 35-year review.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a potentially disabling neurologic injury that can occur in horseback riding. To date, no published study has examined the epidemiology of SCI from horseback riding in the United States, and few international studies exist on this topic. Several studies have described traumatic brain injuries, spine fractures, and extremity injuries; however, SCI patterns and outcomes in horseback riders are poorly understood. PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to characterize the demographics, SCI patterns, and neurologic outcomes of persons with SCIs related to horseb

Exercise and bone mineral accrual in children and adolescents.

Osteoporosis is a serious skeletal disease causing an increase in morbidity and mortality through its association with age-related fractures. Although most effort in fracture prevention has been directed at retarding the rate of age-related bone loss and reducing the frequency and severity of trauma among elderly people, evidence is growing that peak bone mass is an important contributor to bone strength during later life. Indeed, there has been a large emphasis on the prevention of osteoporosis through the optimization of peak bone mass during childhood and adolescence. The prepubertal human

Quantifying Risk Factors for Osteochondritis Dissecans in Children: A Propensity-Matched Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a developmental orthopaedic condition in pediatric patients characterized by disruption of epiphyseal cartilage vascular supply leading to secondary subchondral bone changes and potential joint degeneration. While repetitive trauma is implicated, emerging evidence suggests a contributing role of biological and hereditary risk factors. PURPOSE: To quantify the relative risk (RR) of OCD with specific biological comorbidities and athletic participation in a large representative pediatric and adolescent population. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional stud

Prevalence of urinary incontinence in nulliparous Indian sportswomen.

INTRODUCTION: A common gynaecological problem among women that leads to a negative impact on quality of life and causes distress is the involuntary loss of urine which is addressed as urinary incontinence (UI). Females involved in playing various types of sports perform high-intensity activities which can serve as risk factors for UI and pelvic organ prolapse. According to the available literature, there is a scarcity of information regarding data on the prevalence of UI in Indian female athletes. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of UI in nulliparous I

Epidemiology of Anterior Tibial Spine Fractures in Young Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 122 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Historically, bicycle accidents were described as the most common mechanism for pediatric anterior tibial spine fractures (ATSFs). There is a paucity of current literature examining the demographic factors associated with these injuries. The purpose of this cohort study was to characterize the epidemiology of ATSFs presenting to a single tertiary referral pediatric hospital. METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 122 pediatric patients with ATSFs between 1996 and 2014 were reviewed. Radiographic variables, classification of fractures (Meyers and McKeever type), age, sex, height, weight,

Athletic amenorrhoea. An update on aetiology, complications and management.

The enormous increase in participation by women in physical recreation and sport since the early 1970s, has seen a parallel increase in research into the effects of strenuous exercise on the female neuroendocrine and reproductive systems. Oligomenorrhoea, primary or secondary amenorrhoea, altered pubertal progression, defective luteal phase, anovulation, and infertility may result, most frequently in those aerobic type activities associated with the lower bodyweight and fat percentages such as running, aerobics, and gymnastics. As well as body composition and sport specificity, intensity of tr

Altered Ulnar Variance With Full-Body Weight-Bearing During Handstands With Upper Extremity Weight-Bearing CT.

PURPOSE: Ulnar variance (UV) is a radiographic measurement relating the articular surface heights of the distal radius and ulna. Abnormal UV increases the risk for wrist pathology; however, it only provides a static measurement of an inherently dynamic bony relationship that changes with wrist position and loading. The purpose of this study was to investigate how full-body weight-bearing affects UV using weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT). METHODS: Ten gymnasts completed two 45-second scans inside a WBCT machine while performing a handstand on a flat platform (H) and parallettes (P). A
