Seasonal Patterns of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Caused by L. major and Transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi in the North Africa Region, a Systematic Review and a Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In North African countries, zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a seasonal disease linked to Phlebotomus papatasi, Scopoli, 1786, the primary proven vector of L. major dynamics. Even if the disease is of public health importance, studies of P. papatasi seasonal dynamics are often local and dispersed in space and time. Therefore, a detailed picture of the biology and behavior of the vector linked with climatic factors and the framework of ZCL outbreaks is still lacking at the North African countries' level. Our study aims to fill this gap via a systematic review and meta-analy

Transient cardioprotective effects of remote ischemic postconditioning on non-reperfused myocardial infarction: longitudinal evaluation study in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Remote ischemic postconditioning (RIPostC) has recently emerged as a potential novel therapeutic strategy to achieve protection against acute myocardial infarction (AMI) injury. We aimed to evaluate the longitudinal cardioprotective effects of RIPostC on AMI using 99mTc-MIBI SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and gated 18F-FDG PET (GPET) in pigs. METHODS: MI was induced in 12 Chinese pigs. RIPostC was conducted by four 5 min cycles of blood pressure cuff inflation applied to the lower limb immediately after AMI. MPI and GPET were performed longitudinally at baseline, 3rd, 14

Swelling-induced Ca²+ influx and K+ efflux in American alligator erythrocytes.

The American alligator can hibernate during winter, which may lead to osmotic imbalance because of reduced kidney function and lack of food consumption during this period. Accordingly, we hypothesized that their red blood cells would have a well-developed regulatory volume decrease (RVD) to cope with the homeostatic challenges associated with torpor. Osmotic fragility was determined optically, mean cell volume was measured by electronic sizing, and changes in intracellular Ca²+ concentration were visualized using fluorescence microscopy and fluo-4-AM. Osmotic fragility increased and the abilit

Scintigraphic evaluation of myocardial and cerebral blood flow in patients with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting.

This paper deals with a comparative scintigraphic evaluation of the changes that occur in coronary and cerebral circulation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) under conditions of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) or beating heart. Twenty-nine CAD patients who underwent CPB were examined. Of these, 14 patients were operated on using CPB (the first group) and 15 patients on the beating heart using the myocardial "stabilizer" Octopus (the 2nd group). The patient groups matched in terms of the age, sex, the clinical and angiographic factors. Perf

Presence of angiographic coronary collaterals predicts myocardial recovery after coronary bypass surgery in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronary artery disease and left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) may have areas of hibernating myocardium that improve functionally after revascularization. Coronary collateral circulation may sustain ischemic, dysfunctional myocardium and favor myocardial recovery after revascularization. We evaluated the effect of angiographic coronary collaterals on myocardial functional recovery after coronary bypass graft (CABG) surgery in a group of patients with severe LVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-one patients with multivessel coronary artery disease and advanced LVD (left ve

Radioprotective effects of induced astronaut torpor and advanced propulsion systems during deep space travel.

BACKGROUND: Human metabolic suppression is not a new concept, with 1950s scientific literature and movies demonstrating its potential use for deep space travel (Hock, 1960). An artificially induced state of metabolic suppression in the form of torpor would improve the amount of supplies required and therefore lessen weight and fuel required for missions to Mars and beyond (Choukèr et al., 2019). Transfer habitats for human stasis to Mars have been conceived (Bradford et al., 2018). Evidence suggests that animals, when hibernating, demonstrate relative radioprotection compared to their awake st

[Possible reasons for the variability of the inotropic insulin effect in papillary muscles of ground squirrel myocardium].

The effects of insulin (0.1-50 nM) on isometric twitch force (0.1 to 1.0 Hz; 30 +/- 1 degree C; 1.8 mM Ca(2+)) were studied in right ventricular papillary muscles from active ground squirrels of different seasons (summer, n = 14; autumn, n = 16 and winter interbout, n = 16) in control conditions and after one-hour pretreatment of PM with 2 mkM nifedipine (an L-type Ca(2+)-channel inhibitor) and 1.0 mM orthovanadate (a tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor). In active animals of different seasonal periods insulin causes both positive and negative inotropic effects. At low frequencies (0.1-0.5 Hz), ins

Discrete thalamic lesions attenuate winter adaptations and increase body weight.

The midline thalamus (e.g., the paraventricular thalamic nuclei and the reuniens nucleus) of Siberian hamsters and other mammals has been reported to contain specific binding sites for melatonin, a hormone that is essential for photoperiodically induced winter adaptations such as reproductive quiescence, loss of body weight, daily torpor, and the winter molt. The first experiment investigated whether the midline thalamus is necessary for these winter adaptations. Adult Siberian hamsters received discrete neurotoxic lesions of the paraventricular thalamic nuclei or the reuniens nucleus while un

Impact of Coronary Endarterectomy on Mid-Term Left Ventricular Functional Recovery in Diffuse Coronary Artery Disease.

PURPOSE: Although coronary endarterectomy performed for diffuse coronary artery disease is known to increase early postoperative morbidity, its effects on mid-term myocardial functional recovery remain controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to examine changes in preoperative and sixth-month postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction, as assessed by echocardiography, in patients undergoing single or multiple coronary endarterectomy concomitantly with coronary artery bypass grafting. METHODS: A total of 151 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting with concomitant corona

Positively selected genes in the hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) lineage: prominence of thymus expression, immune and metabolic function, and regions of ancient synteny.

BACKGROUND: Bats of the genus Lasiurus occur throughout the Americas and have diversified into at least 20 species among three subgenera. The hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) is highly migratory and ranges farther across North America than any other wild mammal. Despite the ecological importance of this species as a major insect predator, and the particular susceptibility of lasiurine bats to wind turbine strikes, our understanding of hoary bat ecology, physiology, and behavior remains poor. METHODS: To better understand adaptive evolution in this lineage, we used whole-genome sequencing to iden

Walterinnesia aegyptia venom combined with silica nanoparticles enhances the functioning of normal lymphocytes through PI3K/AKT, NFκB and ERK signaling.

BACKGROUND: The toxicity of snake venom varies over time in some species. The venom of newborn and small juvenile snakes appears to be more potent than adults of the same species, and a bite from a snake that has not fed recently, such as one that has just emerged from hibernation, is more dangerous than one that has recently fed due to the larger volume of venom injected. Therefore, the potency of a snake's venom is typically determined using the LD50 or IC50 tests. In the present study, we evaluated the anti-tumor potential of snake venom from Walterinnesia aegyptia (WEV) on the human breast

Reference intervals and physiologic alterations in hematologic and biochemical values of free-ranging desert tortoises in the Mojave Desert.

Desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) populations have experienced precipitous declines resulting from the cumulative impact of habitat loss, and human and disease-related mortality. Evaluation of hematologic and biochemical responses of desert tortoises to physiologic and environmental factors can facilitate the assessment of stress and disease in tortoises and contribute to management decisions and population recovery. The goal of this study was to obtain and analyze clinical laboratory data from free-ranging desert tortoises at three sites in the Mojave Desert (California, USA) between Octob

Cardiac shockwave therapy in addition to coronary bypass surgery improves myocardial function in ischaemic heart failure: the CAST-HF trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In chronic ischaemic heart failure, revascularisation strategies control symptoms but are less effective in improving left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The aim of this trial is to investigate the safety of cardiac shockwave therapy (SWT) as a novel treatment option and its efficacy in increasing cardiac function by inducing angiogenesis and regeneration in hibernating myocardium. METHODS: In this single-blind, parallel-group, sham-controlled trial (cardiac shockwave therapy for ischemic heart failure, CAST-HF; NCT03859466) patients with LVEF ≤40% requiring surgic

Surgical Porcine Model of Chronic Myocardial Ischemia Treated by Exosome-laden Collagen Patch and Off-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft.

Chronic myocardial ischemia resulting from progressive coronary artery stenosis leads to hibernating myocardium (HIB), defined as myocardium that adapts to reduced oxygen availability by reducing metabolic activity, thereby preventing irreversible cardiomyocyte injury and infarction. This is distinct from myocardial infarction, as HIB has the potential for recovery with revascularization. Patients with significant coronary artery disease (CAD) experience chronic ischemia, which puts them at risk for heart failure and sudden death. The standard surgical intervention for severe CAD is coronary a

Application of predictive degree day model for field development of sandfly vectors of visceral leishmaniasis in northwest of Iran.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Temperature plays a significant role in insect's development where a rise in temperature, accelerates the insect's metabolic rates, increases egg production and makes blood feeding more frequent. It also shortens the time period required for the development of pathogens within insects. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the most important vector-borne diseases transmitted by different sandfly species. In this study, a phenological model was used to estimate the number of generations, peak activity and temporal variability of sandflies in the main VL foci in northwes

Protein synthesis inhibition as a potential strategy for metabolic down-regulation.

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study tested the potential of puromycin (PUR) to inhibit protein synthesis and reduce oxygen utilization in a non-hibernating, whole animal preparation. METHODS: After anesthesia and instrumentation, male rats received a single dose of PUR or 0.9% saline (control), followed 60 min later with [(35)S] methionine/cysteine radiolabeling. Thirty minutes after isotope injection, organ biopsies were taken for quantification of de novo protein synthesis. Arterial and central venous blood gases were obtained at baseline and 60 min after injection of PUR or 0.9% saline. Temperatur

Establishing Primary and Stable Cell Lines from Frozen Wing Biopsies for Cellular, Physiological, and Genetic Studies in Bats.

Bats stand out among mammalian species for their exceptional traits, including the capacity to navigate through flight and echolocation, conserve energy through torpor/hibernation, harbor a multitude of viruses, exhibit resistance to disease, survive harsh environmental conditions, and demonstrate exceptional longevity compared to other mammals of similar size. In vivo studies of bats can be challenging for several reasons such as ability to locate and capture them in their natural environments, limited accessibility, low sample size, environmental variation, long lifespans, slow reproductive
