PURPOSE: Ossiculoplasty outcome parameter staging (OOPS) and middle ear risk index (MERI) are the most commonly used indices for predicting prognosis of patients with chronic otitis media (COM). This study aimed to verify the efficiency of OOPS and MERI scores in predicting outcomes of patients with COM who underwent tympanoplasty.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of patients who underwent tympanoplasty (n = 526). OOPS, and MERI scores were collected. Hearing data were measured 1 day preoperatively, and 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Operation success was defined according to t

William Cheselden's famous anatomical treatise spanned the entire 18th century period with its 15 editions. The aim of this study is to analyze the otological knowledge described in all these editions, to identify key 18th century otological advancements, and to study their concordance. In the first edition (1713), Cheselden notably mentioned four middle ear ossicles: malleus, incus, fourth ossicle, and stapes; four auditory muscles: "external tympani," "external oblique," tensor tympani, and stapedial; and a small opening in the tympanic membrane. In subsequent editions, minimal changes appear

The multidrug-resistant ST131-O25b clone of Escherichia coli is well established as a significant cause of extra-intestinal infections worldwide. However, there have been only two small regional studies comparing ST131 isolates from the UK. Therefore, we characterized 143 ST131 E. coli (38 urinary, 105 bloodstream) collected between January 2011 and March 2012 from 38 centres located across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of clonal isolates revealed high rates of resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanate (56 %), cefotaxime (32 %), ciprofloxacin (79 %), tem

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to find out the reasons of the recurrent or persisting hearing loss after previous stapes surgery indicated for otosclerosis.
BACKGROUND: Revision stapes surgery is a relatively safe surgical method. Recurrent or persisting conductive hearing loss is commonly caused by prosthesis dislocation and adhesions in the oval window. Hearing loss is directly proportional to the number of previous operations.
METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 48 patients after revision stapes surgery was done over a period of 4 years (2005-2008). Improvement of the hearing and the

OBJECTIVES: Microscopic postauricular tympanomastoidectomy provides a limited exposure to the attic, especially anteriorly. In contrast, the endoscope offers wide transcanal access to the attic, allowing for complete removal of limited attic disease, possibly without interrupting the ossicular chain. This report evaluates 8 years of experience with transcanal endoscopic management of limited attic cholesteatoma.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
METHODS: Seventy-three ears with limited attic cholesteatoma underwent endoscopic transcanal tympanotomy and extended atticotomy to access and completely r

INTRODUCTION: Congenital fistula of the stapedial footplate is a rare cause of recurrent purulent meningitis and a diagnostic and therapeutic problem as well.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a stapedial fistula diagnosed intraoperatively in a 4-year-old boy, after recurrent meningitis. The boy was hospitalized at the Pediatric Clinic three times in a 6-month period because of recurrent meningitis. The applied anti-meningitis therapy presented with good general state of the child, but the main target was to discover the cause of recurrent meningitis. Immunologic and genetic investigations wer

Authentified by the name of Laumonier (fecit), written on the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, a model in wax of the medial, middle and lateral ears, belongs to the collection of the "Musées Delmas, Orfila et Rouvière" in Paris. This model presents large dimensions with a great anatomical rightness. The entire temporal bone is represented with the upper part of the endocranial petrous bone removed in order to demonstrate the main elements of the internal ear (cochlea and semi-circular canals) and of the middle ear (malleus and incus). Also were represented the temporal muscle and tempor

This study determined the effect of acoustic overstimulation of the adult cochlea on axons in the cochlear nucleus. Chinchillas were exposed to an octave-band noise centered at 4 kHz at 108 dB sound pressure level for 1.75 h. One chinchilla was never exposed to the noise, and several others had one ear protected by an ear plug or prior removal of the malleus and incus. Exposure of unprotected ears caused loss of inner and outer hair cells and myelinated nerve fibers, mostly in the basal half of the cochlea. Cochlear nerve fiber degeneration, ipsilateral to the exposed ears, was traced to regio

The history of basic research on the function of the hearing organ is revisited. The present, second part of the review covers the period between the renaissance of anatomical research in the 16th century and the beginning of modern hearing research at the end of the 19th century. Andreas Vesalius gave the two ossicles malleus and incus their names. His scholar Philippus Ingrassia found 1546 the third ossicle, the stapes. The cochlea was discovered 1552 by Bartholomeus Eustachius and denoted as cochlea 1561 by Gabriel Falloppio. Thomas Willis speculated 1672 that different "tones" (species aud

We report a case of bilateral congenital cholesteatoma in a 6-year-old boy. Cholesteatoma was present in both ears around the tympanic isthmus (the only open passage from the tympanic cavity to the attic), extending to behind the horizontal portion of the facial nerve. This patient underwent a total of three canal wall up operations on each side to remove the cholesteatoma completely and improve hearing. This case fulfills the criteria proposed by Derlacki and Clemis in 1965. Bilateral congenital cholesteatoma is a rare condition, but the incidence of congenital cholesteatoma in children has i
