Oral contraceptives (OCs) containing estrogen and/or progesterone are the second most common form of female contraception in the United States. While endogenously synthesized estrogen is known to provide protective effects against cardiometabolic diseases, exogenous forms such as OCs have been linked to increased susceptibility to cardiometabolic diseases and an elevated risk of myocardial infarction. The gut microbiota is thought to be a critical regulator of cardiometabolic disease risk; however, its interactions with OC use remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the effects of

Dietary protein intake is closely related to bone health. However, it remains unclear how different dietary protein sources contribute to bone mass and how the gut microbiota affects these processes. This study investigated the relationships of dietary animal and plant protein intake with bone mineral density (BMD) and the mediating role of gut microbes in these associations. A total of 1012 participants aged 18-64 years were recruited. Dietary protein intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The gut microbiota was analysed

Finding strategies for decolonizing gut carriers of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (MDR-Ec) is a public-health priority. In this context, novel approaches should be validated in preclinical in vivo gut colonization models before being translated to humans. However, the use of mice presents limitations. Here, we used for the first time Zophobas morio larvae to design a new model of intestinal colonization (28-days duration, T28). Three hyperepidemic MDR-Ec producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) or carbapenemases were administered via contaminated food to larvae for the first 7 d

The present study aims to deepen the knowledge of the microbiota, gross composition, physico-chemical and morpho-textural features, biogenic amines content and volatilome of Njeguški cheese, one of the most popular indigenous cheeses produced in Montenegro. Cheese samples were collected in duplicate from three different batches produced by three Montenegrin artisan producers. For the first time, the microbiota of Njeguški cheese was investigated using both culture-dependent techniques and metagenomic analysis. Coagulase positive staphylococci viable counts were below the detection limit of the

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is an estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss, which has been shown an association with an altered gut microbiota (GM). Gut microbiota-bone axis has been recognized as a crucial mediator for bone homeostasis. Icariin (ICA) is an effective agent to delay bone loss by regulating the bone homeostasis. Thus, we hypothesize that ICA can prevent bone loss by modulating GM and regulating metabolite alterations. The effects of ICA on bone metabolism improvement in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and their relationships with the GM and fecal metabolites were investigated. Mic

Transcriptome analysis is a powerful tool that enables a deep understanding of complicated physiological pathways, including immune responses. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq)-based transcriptome analysis and various bioinformatics tools have also been used to study non-model animals, including aquaculture species for which reference genomes are not available. Rapid developments in these techniques have not only accelerated investigations into the process of pathogenic infection and defense strategies in fish, but also used to identify immunity-related genes in fish. These findings will contribute to

Proteomic studies with different Staphylococcus aureus isolates have shown that the cell surface-exposed and secreted proteins IsaA, LytM, Nuc, the propeptide of Atl (pro-Atl) and four phenol-soluble modulins α (PSMα) are invariantly produced by this pathogen. Therefore the present study was aimed at investigating whether these proteins can be used for active immunization against S. aureus infection in mouse models of bacteremia and skin infection. To this end, recombinant His-tagged fusions of IsaA, LytM, Nuc and pro-Atl were isolated from Lactococcus lactis or Escherichia coli, while the PSM

BACKGROUND: Considering global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevalence, alternative or complementary strategies to antimicrobial use, are of interest. Livestock- associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is of particular interest as despite significant AMU reduction, LA-MRSA prevalence in pig husbandry has not decreased. To develop such strategy, we performed targeted isolation of bacterial species with potential antagonism against LA-MRSA in pig farms.
RESULTS: Duplicate piglet nasal swabs from three European countries (Germany, Ireland and The Netherlands) were take

This study focuses on the carriage and antibiotic-susceptibility profiles of Gram-positive bacteria in dromedary camel milk. A total of 103 milk samples were collected from apparently healthy female dromedaries in southern Tunisia. Bacterial growth was observed only in 82 of these samples, yielding 86 Gram-positive bacterial isolates. Staphylococcus was the most frequently isolated genus (54/86, 62.8%) with 13% of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) represented by S. aureus and S. intermedius and 87% of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) (n = 47) identified as S. simulans, S. xylosus,
